Thumbs up Long Term High Dosage Motilium Users....

    G'day

I have been on Motilium since bub was about 8 days old, and after doing the 3 a day for a week 2 a day for a week and the 1 a day for a week, I kept on the 1 a day until she was 9-10 weeks old then started to drop down to 1 every 2 days, and bub started losing weight. After waiting ages to get an appointment with a specialist GP, and having to do some F top ups, I was prescribed 6 a day, and then to slowly wean down again, but if I felt my supply drop then to go right back up again.

I have tried dropping it a few times and my supply would drop, this time though we are going okay, I am now down to 2 a day, one morning and one at night. After just dropping 1 tablet over a 3 week period (very slowly!!)

Were you able to wean of the Motilium completely while breast feeding or did you have to drop it down when you or bubs was ready to wean?

I would like to be Motilium free but I am also hoping to BF until August (12 months corrected) as a start, then hoping to keep a morning and night feed at least after then.

Just hoping to hear any long term/high dosage users, successful and or not successful attempts at weaning off Motilium

Hi there, don't feel bad about taking mottillium. Its better than giving up on breastfeeding entirely!

I was on 6 tablets a day for a while, then I was able to wean back to maybe 3 a day, then my supply would drop etc etc. SO I was up and down on the tabs depending on my supply. Some days were better than others.

Once Mason was eating more and more solids, he would only have a couple of breastfeeds and my supply was sufficient for only 2 feeds a day, so then I was able to wean off the meds.

Just see how you go and don't stress about it. I noticed that everytime I thought about stopping, I got stressed and anxious and I think thats a big reason behind my supply dropping.

Let us know how you go

    Hi!!
I used Motiluim full time for 6 months, 6 a day.

I couldn't drop ANY tablets without a decrease in milk supply, but I was exclusively expressing with a pump, no suckling at all....

I stopped after 6 months as there are no studies on long term high dose Motilium for babies and I didn't want to take the risk of it having bad effects on my son... Within a week I had no milk.....

I was advised to go off the tabs VERY slowly, but nothing helped... any drop in dosage meant less milk for me... I know a few mums who's milk also dropped immediatly, and others who weaned off and went on to feed fine... so I'm thinking it must just be something that is different for everyone....

    Good luck hon!!!

Thanks heaps for that Danni!! I haven't come across many people who had been on the dosages I was on, the GP said I could go up to 8 a day if need be.

I guess what is niggling in the back of my mind was the GP I saw last time, said that 6-8 months of BF'ing is excellent, and not to feel bad if I couldn't keep going. But it is really important to me and Nakita loves her boobie, and since she learnt to feed properly at 5 1/2 months it became pain free and really enjoyable. It is just a beautiful bond and I would hate to lose it just because I needed to stop the Motilium.

I think the intorduction of solids also helped, a bit less pressure as well, even though milk is always first!

How long have you or did you BF for?

    Thankyou xxoo

Thanks for that info PB, we posted around the same time, I think that is why my supply was so terrible for so long, I was expressing after every feed and inbetween if I could and N was a very poor "sucker" until she was 5 1/2 months when it finally clicked, I was also under a lot of stress especially with a lack of weight gain, then loss!!

I think I will stay on two for a while, and see how I go, I am back to expressing again on work days, but had trouble this week as I was in the middle of meetings right when I should have been expressing (2-3 hours meetings too )

But next week I will be able to express on time and I will see how I go, that will give me a good clue about how my supply is going.

Thankyou for some success stories and we are lucky that we have it as an option or our littlies would have been missing out on the liquid gold

Hey, We ended up weaning at 13 months. It was really me who weaned him as I found he wasn't really interested.
