I've always done crimped side up and they have stayed in place, but I also always use 2 pins at 90degree angles so maybe that's why it works for me? Willing to give crimped side down a try to see if it looks better though

Never in my life have I ever known anyone to put them crimped side up!
I thought the point to the bobby pin was to be 'unseen' in the grand scheme of the hair-do? So I always match my pins to my hair colour, and place them smooth side up in a concealed position.
