Red face Does anyone still get their hair permed?

Im over curling my hair! Im contemplating having it permed . I asked my hairdresser about it a while ago and she thought i was nuts. She said nobody perms their hair anymore, except for the nana's! She said it damages the hair too much and it's easier to just curl it yourself. But i dont have the time (or patience!) anymore!

So ladies, what do you think? To perm or not to perm?

I just googled perms and you can get LOTS of different types these days! You can get whatever size and type curl you like. Now im getting excited! Me thinks im gonna get my hair permed!

i eventually found a hairdresser who didnt look at me like i was a mega dag, and she did a lovely messy perm look. she combined mixed sz rollers and didnt do the whole head. it looked fantastic but i couldnt afford to keep going to her, and other hairdresseers just dont understand what i want. so i had great curls for 1 yr! and it was easier than doing it myself (which never happens - i cant find time to get the tongs out and i dont have rollers). I have moved now and live too far away to go back to that HD anyway now
I think it helps if you refer to it as a 'bodywave' rather than perm, it sounds more up to date iykwim

Yes!!! I got my first ever perm a few mnths before I fell prenant and it was awesome! It was only $70 and that included a wash and cut so I thought that was good!

Yep you can choose how big or how tight you want the curls. They can help you suggest which one is best for you hair depending on thickness, weight etc.

I loved it. I really did. But now I have cut most of it out as I hate having long hair and being pregnant. I can't wait to do it again!

TT maybe the hairdresser didn't want to admit she is shocking at perms ... as she maybe out of touch in doing them in a more youngish modern style

My SIL is a hairdresser (TAFE trained) ... and she holds her scissors in the way i was told by my trainer not to NEVER EVER do (my trainer in Toorak who did major shows in Japan pretty much knew what she was talking about) ... and the manner my SIL cuts hair is unheard of ... So, my point is not ALL hairdressers are that great at their job

I have naturally curly hair and years ago i use to get me fringe permed as it wasn't as curly as the rest ... my hairdresser at the time thought it was the funniest thing to do .. but admitted it did look better

SALSA ... that sounded like an awesome hairdo ... reckon you are right in asking for a ' Bodywave ' instead of a perm

TT gets some curls going their girl (some body there) ... i love the messy curly look ... Hope you get what you are after (Maybe take a photo in so the hairdreser can get an idea and tell you if it's do-able and suitable for you) !!!

Yeah, 'bodywaves' are the go these days, apparently. 'Perms' are what the nannas get, with the tight little curls on top of their head - if you have longer hair and want wavy/curly, ask for a bodywave and consult with your hairdresser to get the right amount/size of curl.
My hair is waist-length and extremely thick so once I drop baby #2 I'll be going to get it done because I looove having wavy hair (not curly, just nice soft waves) but no matter what I do, hot tongs, heated rollers, velcro rollers etc, it just doesn't hold for more than ten minutes (and I cannot use a can of hairspray every morning because I hate that crusty, product-saturated look and feel)... and I'm flat-out getting in a 5-minute shower in the mornings (I have to put DD in her cot so she can't get into mischief) so I just do not have the time to sit there playing with styling implements for two hours to get the style I want.

It's gonna cost me though, my hairdresser (who is super-cheap, she works from home and cuts my hair for around $15 when I'd pay around $80 at a salon) has quoted me $240 purely because of the length

Madissun - have you had it done yet? Very curious to know how it looks, I love wavy/curly hair too but mine's lost a lot of it's curl.

I had a friend who got a 'body wave' done a few years ago...OMG, it wasn't good. She has very short hair and it looked like...well think Kath n Kim...

Don't panic, hers was like boy short and she has very, very fine hair, almost like a baby, which is why she did it, hoping to add some volume.

The curls were just way too tight, that's all!

I had to get really tight curls cos my hair is very straight and very thin. She said if i went for a wave, it would just fall out straight away

I loved it! it was awesome!

My hair is very straight. I've had two perms in my life, first was great. Used the smaller rollers but didn't leave the solution on for as long as it was supposed to be. My second one was last year and didn't last long at all. She alternated between the medium and small rollers and it just fell out so quickly. There's some wave left if I wash it and let it air dry, but by next brushing, its almost straight. So make sure you go to a salon that knows what they are doing, even if it means paying a bit more.

I want a perm too. I have fairly short hair, and I want a perm like a afro. I would love love love to have curls that just stuck out all around my head. I know it sounds ridiculous but I'm serious. My concern is that when it grows, the roots will be straight, or does the perm lose it's curl before that happens so it evens out?

^ It flattens out a fair bit so you won't get a really obvious straight-straight-straight-CURL-CURL-CURL lol
But if you want really tight curls and your hair is dead straight, you will still see a bit of a line where the perm ends and the regrowth starts.

Sounds a bit weird....but I could pull it back with a headband when that happens. What happens when you've had enough of the perm? Do you just have to wait for it to straighten or grow out?

I had my hair permed in august last year.....,i asked for a body wave and got granny ringlets apparently they had to put little curlers in my hair due to the length (half way down my back)....i hated it ...I also had to have it redone 3 days aftewards as most of it dropped out..ive since cut it to my shoulders and i now have tight curl's again ....... next time im gonna ask for the messy perm...I really like the soound of that one
