    ok, no rules.

but there must be "tricks" and "guidelines".

there must be ways of flattering older skin. tricks that work for that. cos all the tricks i used when my skin was younger, do not work now (with different skin). The plumpness of the face is gone.

on the makeover shows, look 10 years younger etc, the makeup artists allude to tricks for different age groups.

there must be something to it, i don't think just anyone could be a makeup artist, they know what they're doing, they're schooled up, they're practised. Their jargon floors me, i have no clue what they mean by "contouring". i watch, i listen, but it might as well be in another language. So i admire what they do, even though i don't understand it.

Benefit Benetint (Lip & Cheek Stain) - I have the Benetint Pocket which is double ended and comes with gloss... it's BRILLIANT
I have heard of this a few times now - might have too look into it!! Sounds amazing! Having said that I tend to buy pretty cheap make up usually so I might find it hard to fork out the $$

If I am home all day then nothing.
If I am ducking out on just general jobs like kinder drop off, shopping, etc. I will wear bronzer, a bit of mineral foundation (Both Australis) some eyeshadow and mascara.
At work I pretty much wear the same but I put on a bit more of everything! I use Paw Paw on my lips and occasionally a pink gloss.

My desert island items would be bronzer (although I guess i would be sun-kissed anyway on a desert island ) mascara and eyelash curler and paw paw cream!

One of my biggest insecurities is my freckles, DP says he thinks theyre cute and theyre me but i have always hated them so i always wear foundation, lately its been the maybelline mousse foundation with eyeliner, mascara and some blush. I used to be crazy for lipgloss but never wear it now unless im going out somewhere nice. You will rarely if ever see me without any make up on.

Oh, absolutely Gigi. Especially as you say, for different ages and skin types. Foundation is hard to choose, but I think all skin needs to be really well prepped for any foundation to look good (powder, liquid, cheap, expensive, etc).

How frustrating that you've been sold things that didn't work for you not cool.

Is the organic mascara working out ok? There are lots of certified organic and natural brands around now that might offer other products to suit you. I keep a few in my kit for those with sensitive eyes - or who prefer to use natural products. I'd be happy to recommend products or tips to you (or anyone for that matter!) anytime, just PM. I'm completely brand-neutral, I use pretty much everything!

LMS, I love freckles! I'm sure yours are beautiful. I guess the grass is always greener though, right?

PS hope everyone is wearing SPF! Can't stress enough how important this is, even if you're only out in the sun for short periods. Sun exposure is the quickest way to age your skin.

I don't wear any generally for work or for going out.

For a wedding I emceed recently, I wore what I *used* to wear everyday: foundation, eyeliner, eyeshadow (light, med, dark blended properly), mascara, lipstick. But it's a pretty rare event!

When im in Australia I wear full make up every day. Moisturiser, concealer, liquid foundatioon, loose power, eyebrow pencil, eye shadow, eye liner, mascara and broner. Lips normally just gloss during the day and lippy at night. Please note I dont look like its caked on, I blend it really well.

While I have been overseas it has been too hot!!!! I jsut wear it out at night.

Definitely! Skin tone is a big factor. For example if my skin is feeling dry I always start with a tinted moisturiser (yes it has SPF 15 ) And if my skin is feeling oilier than usual a straight cover all pressed powder works well. When picking a foundation it really is trial and error, see how it goes on your skin, and decide what kind of coverage you would like. I've probably tried about 15+ in my lifetime. And colour is really important. No matter what your skin shade don't go for something a darker colour than your skin tone, or you'll find you'll be blending for AGES or you'll have that nasty line that I see girls who want that "tanned" look have... and it looks dreadful. Also play with yellow based foundations as well as pink based and see what works for you... then you can go lighter or darker. I try and steer clear from yellow, my moisturiser is a bit yellow but because I use it with a pink based powder it evens out and actually works well with my skin tone.

This often happens. Only the other day I was at a major department store, trying to find a good foundation, each person that tried to apply it applied a colour that didn't suit, with a coverage that didn't suit. The MAC counter was the only one that actually knew my colouring better than I did vs. their products. The other good tip is, once you find a colour that suits, hold onto the dregs, and take it with you when you go to choose a foundation. This will help you to be able to colour match. As well as give the staff a better idea of what sort of coverage you would like and be able to help you find a product that works best. Keep in mind too some product lines work better for different skin types/tones than others. Which is why when I have a foundation I love I often stick to that label for all things foundation, unless the product line discontinues. When it comes to other makeup I go with what I like.

Me Me ME! And there's also an awesome spray sunscreen that you can get from Neurtrogena that goes over the top of your makeup too.

None. Sometimes I'll put mascara and/or lip gloss on, but that's it. I even still have/use some lip colour I got free with a Girlfriend magazine, that's how little I use.

Great tip! I do that too. I got a Clarins foundation one time that was the perfect colour, but I just didn't have the finances to keep buying the expensive brand, so I took it into a department store and found a cheaper brand with a colour that was almost identical. I actually use them for different purposes because the way they cover is very different. For every day use I use the cheaper one mixed into some moisturiser. It's a very silky foundation and is easy to apply and blend evenly. The Clarins one is a little thicker and seems to dry and be absorbed on my skin quicker, so even when I mix it with moisturiser I have to apply it faster or it will be uneven. Having said that, it gives better coverage and looks better, so I use that one for special occasions.

At the very least mascara but I often wear full makeup.

My favourite products at the moment are

    Foundation - Bourjois Healthy mix
Power foundation - MAC mineralize skinfinsh natural
Contouring powder - MAC mineralize skinfinsh natural (but a darker one)
High lighters - MAC mineralize skinfinsh in Stereo Rose, Gold Spill and Northern Light and Guerlain Meteorites.
Cheeks (cream) - Stila convertible colour in Lillium and Gerbera and MAC blush cream in Sweet William.
Cheeks (powder) - Nars in Orgasm. Still trying to find the perfect bright blue based pink powder.
Eyes - MAC in Parfait Amour (as well as my pigments, too many to name) and Revlon Colour Stay quads in 04 Sandstorm and 20 sunrise, sunset.
Mascara - Covergirl lash blast volume (orange tube) in very black.
Eye pencil - Rimmel soft kohl.
    Brows - MAC brow pencil.
Lips - Loving MAC magenta line pencil with Chanel provocative layered over the top! Revlon matte 011 Stormy pink lipstick. Bourjois Effet 3D les nudes in 34 (perfect nude gloss) and Chanel glossimer in 146 and 148.

I start with an SPF30+ moisturiser, followed by liquid foundation, powder and mascarra. If I am going to uni I add eyeshadow, blush, eyebrow pencil and pink lipstick. If I am going out I add all the stuff I wear to uni plus eye liner, volume lash mascara instead of my general stuff, lip liner and red lippy.

When I get out of the shower I moisturise my face, allow it to sink in/dry before anything else, while this is happening I put on deodorant & perfume. I put primer all over. While that is "drying" I brush my teeth. Next eyes are done except for mascara. I put my base on (with a brush). Concealer if needed. I finish with lip pencil, lipstick and mascara. I put on my lip gloss frequently during the day. I also have powder that I can touch up with during the day as it is a wet/dry one, if it is wet it doubles as a foundation.

For nights, I darken the eyes, use my eyebrow brush to put eyebrow powder on them, put some blush and then powder. I usually change my lip colour from my day colour which is neutral to my red.

When I get home, I take all my make-up off and moisturise with organic moroccan oil (Argan du Moroc organic argan oil from a funky shop down Brunswick Street, Fitzroy), which usually gets spread onto my hair if I've put too much on my hands. I also use organic paw paw & honey balm on my lips at night (from same shop in Fitzroy). I also have the lubley jubleys cream from Lush for my breasts, which I use at night because I use Bio Oil in the mornings on them.

oh my make-up list is as follows:

    Hydramax + Active moisturiser (Chanel)
Lift Lumiere, firming & smoothing fluid make-up (Chanel)
    Studio Secrets professional primer (L'Oreal)
Mat Lumiere, powder make-up - can be used either wet or dry, wet as foundation or dry as powder (Chanel)
    Eclat Luminere concealer (Chanel)

Then I do my eyes from a choice of the following:
Wonder Woman shadows in Valiant (MAC)
    Lola Lola (nars)
    Fez (nars)
Ombre Essentielle (Chanel) in following colours: lotus, magic night, cinnamon
Ombre Paupieres #60, liquid (Chanel) - for night
Rated R (nars) - for night

    Eyeliner choices:
La Linge de Chanel professional eyeliner in blue & black (Chanel)
Le Crayon Yeux in Berry (Chanel)
Black pencil (no idea what brand, friend brought it back from overseas for me)
Soft Coal in denim blue (Rimmel)

    Lips:
day - Le Crayon Levres in natural (Chanel), Rouge CoCo #02 Perle (Chanel) with Brilliant Levres #66 lipgloss (Chanel)
night - same lip crayon for day and then Rouge Allure Laque #75 which is Dragon from memory (Chanel)

Eyebrow powder: brow kit in dark (stila)
Blush: Joues Contraste in #63 Plum Attraction (Chanel)
Eyelashes: Custom Eyes waterproof in blackest black (Revlon)

Yes I have a lot of Chanel, but right now at my age it works for me.

I also make sure I give myself a facial at home every week when I have my relaxing soak in the bath. I also moisturise all my body morning and night.

I must admit, I almost never wear make up. And on those rare occaisions I actually do, I rarely put on more then a little light foundation powder and my lipstick.

I do wonder as I get older if I should make more of an effort, but at this stage and age (29) it is often more hassle then it is worth.

Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice tms, I love all of these too. Sounds like you're a girl after my own heart.

Good blue-based pink blushes (powder, creme and gel) to help with your quest:
    - M.A.C Powder Blush, Pink Swoon
    - NARS Blush, Desire
    - Stila Convertible Colour, Fuschia. Scary in the pan, amazing on the face.
    - Benefit Posietint
    - Bobbi Brown Blush, Pale Pink or Peony
    - Smashbox Blush Rush, Radiance.

Revlon used to have a beautiful pink blush in its matte range too, but I think it's discontinued.

I've seen the stila in fuschia online but never had a chance to swatch it in person.

Nope, refuse to buy make-up with it in unless I really have to (my current Chanel foundation does, my previous one didn't), don't wear it on my skin full stop, quickest way for me to burn is to use the stuff.

I rarely wear sun protection. But I'm in a cold, cloudy, rainy country so don't need it. Interestingly, the "sun safe" message here is so strong that children are now suffering vitamin D deficiency: this comes from exposing the skin to sun, and any sun protection on the skin means you don't get necessary exposure.

I generally like Body Shop pencils and lipsticks, but my current faves are eye powder from Elizabeth Arden and lipstick and mascara from Lancome. Liebs likes eyeliner too so although I like the Clinique pencils I won't buy them for Liebs to use!

Hmmm, sun protection is a given for spring/summer and the warm part of autumn. I get a bit lax towards the end of autumn as it gets colder, and don't bother at all in winter - because winter sun is lovely rather than bitey.
