Question Vasectomy - how soon after birth of last child?

Hello, I've got a question about how soon couples have gone for a vasectomy after the birth of their last planned child?

DH and I have always agreed we'd have only two children, and are hoping to get a vasectomy organised soon after the safe arrival of our second. However his doctor is reluctant to perform the procedure before our child is one year old...(citing higher infant mortality rates in the first year) but a) I understood the main SIDS risk is in the first 6 months and b) I'm not sure I have another pregnancy in me, even if something terrible were to happen to one of our children.

I plan to breastfeed as long past the first 12 months as I can and am hoping to minimise the use of oral contraceptives during this time - so it makes perfect sense to use to get this done earlier (possibly around the 6 month old mark).

    Marydean.......

My Dh had the vasectomy in October and Lexie was only born in September! There wasn't even a month in it!

We discussed it with my OB who indicated that ususally they like to envourage people to wait for at least 12 months, but he was happy to give us a referal to the urologist.

My DH then had to go for an initial consult, where the urologist asked him a heap of questions regarding our age, circumstances etc, just to make sure.......

We have friends who did it around the time of the 6 week check up. Our plan was to do it within the first few months while I still had the contraceptive effect of bfing, but then couldn't bring myself to have DH to through with it - JIC we wanted another! I don't think we will, I am torn and DH isn't keen, but I still can't bring myself to say "go for it".

I had DH done before our last was born so i knew for sure there was no risk of falling again. The Dr didnt even question our decision.

Marydean, DH has referral ready to go LOL. I will make the initial appointment tomorrow and hopefully we can get it done before Christmas.
