Biscuits/brownies in a jar recipes- gift ideas!

These are not my recipes and are in fact taken from the taste website but thought they may be useful as Christmas gift ideas. All the ingredients are layered in a jar with a cute tag with further directions and maybe a spoon etc and given as a gift.

    By babylee:
Here's a cookies in a jar recipe that I have used that all gets tipped into the bowl...the recipe is so good that it is now my standard recipe.

Put the following in a 1L jar in order as shown (bottom ingredient on bottom)
    - 3/4 cup oats
    - 2/3 cup choc chips (dark or milk)
    - 2/3 cup white choc chips
    - 1/3 cup white sugar
    - 1/3 packed brown sugar
    - (mix the following together and put in the bottom) (3/4C plain flour, 1/2tsp baking powder, pinch bicarb, pinch salt)

Choc chips can be substituted for nuts, sultanas, craisins...anything you can think of really.

Here's the directions to put on the jar:
Preheat oven to 190C, or 170C FF. Empty jar into a large bowl. Add 125g softened butter, 1 slightly beaten egg and 1tp vanilla. Stir until well mixed. Shape tablespoons of mixture into balls and put on ungreased cookie tray, about 5cm apart. Bake about 10 mins until edges are lightly browned. Cool on wire rack.

Brownies in a jar. I haven't put this in a jar, but I've made the brownies and they're yum!

Put the following in a 1L jar in order as shown (bottom ingredient on bottom)
    - 1/2 cup choc chips
    - 1 cup white choc chips
    - 1 cup plain flour, pinch salt, 1/2 tsp baking powder (mixed together)
    - 1/3 cup cocoa
    - 1 1/2 cups white sugar

Here's the directions to put on the jar:
Preheat oven to 180C. Grease and flour 8" square tin. Combine 125g melted and cooled butter with 2 slightly beaten eggs in a large bowl. Gently stir in contents of jar. Spread into pan. Bake for 35 mins. Cool in pan. Cut into 16 squares.

    M&M Cookies In a Jar by Frizz1974

    INGREDIENTS:
    3/4 cup packed brown sugar
    1/4 cup white sugar
    1 1/2 cups mini candy-coated chocolates (M and Ms)
    2 cups all-purpose flour
    1/2 teaspoon baking soda
    1/4 teaspoon salt

    DIRECTIONS:
Combine the flour with baking soda and salt.
In a clean 1 liter sized glass jar layer the ingredients in the order given starting with the brown sugar and ending with the flour mixture.

Attach a card with the following directions:
    M & M Cookies
    1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Line one baking sheet with parchment paper.
    2. Empty the contents of the jar into a large bowl and mix until all the ingredients are well combined.
    3. Using your hands work in 3/4 cup softened butter or margarine until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
    4. Beat 1 egg with 1 teaspoon vanilla extract. Work this into the flour mixture until well combined. Dough will be a little crumbly.
    5. Shape dough into 1 inch sized balls and place 2 inches apart on the prepared baking sheet. Slightly flatten the balls with the palm of your hand. Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 10 to 14 minutes or until the edges are lightly browned. Remove cookies to a rack to cool. Makes about 2 dozen cookies.

There are a few more recipes there if you want to look further. Someone also suggests making your own labels on the computer and printing them out to stick on the jars.

I made sand brownies (layered in the jar) for a gift last year, and I thought that I had better make the recipe before I gave it to anyone, and it was a total failure! As such I didn't give out any sand brownies!

However KR, I WILL try your brownies (I also admit I have never made brownies before last year), so since they work for you, I must make them work for me.

Thanks also for reminding me to try again with this concept (I bought jars especially last year!)

I think the large Moccona coffee jars would do. I also get large jars from my mum but I have seen large jars in places like Good Sammies!

    What are sand cookies?
And Rouge, do you have a particular recipe for pancakes in a jar?

We did sand cookies for preschool teachers last year & it was a huge hit, some even asked for the recipes so their kids could make them for their teachers!!

Katie, do you remember the sand art jars, basically coloured sand layer in a jar to look pretty? It's the same idea, but with the different coloured cookie ingredients

I did the brownies last year, my Mum asked me if I could re-fill the jar for her for Mothers Day I forgot so I might do a few different ones for her this year.

I got swing top jars from Coles last year, they were $3.50 each and a perfect size and re-usable.

Great idea but do you think the jar would travel well or would the ingredients shake up if it was moved around a bit in the car?

They travel well, you generally get a jar that fit amost near perfect amount of ingredients (the recipe should tell you what sized jar to get). The ingredients do move a little like the flour may mix a little with the cocoa but it all adds to the effect. It all gets tipped into a bowl together to mix and cook anyway so it doesn't matter to much.
