    Cakes with spouts?!

Hi all, I'm having trouble baking cakes in my oven. Whenever I bake a cake, or even cupcakes, they aren't flat or slightly rounded on the top, instead they get a sort of spout shape to them. They start going up in the middle and on the cupcakes the spout gets so big the spout bends to the side.

I read that it might be the oven is too hot, and someone told me it might be a hot-spot in my oven (even though it's fanforced). So last time I made cupcakes I lowered the temperature, and also put them on the lowest shelf to avoid the possible hot-spot, but the same thing still happened!

It's driving me nuts! I really wanted to try to make Kyson's birthday cake myself, but it's not going to happen if I can't work out how to fix this.

    Any ideas???

I want to know the answer to this too, as it has been happening in my oven too (never had a problem in other ovens). Although I must admit I had no idea what you might be talking about from the thread title.

I never have this problem but it sounds very interesting. Can you turn your oven fan off? I always bake my cakes at about 20 degrees lower than the recommended temperature and on the middle shelf. If you cant turn the fan off you could losely cover the top of your pan with alfoil. Are you making them from scratch or packet mix? IMO, sratch cakes usually turn out with heaps less problems than packet ones.

You could be over mixing. Also try using cake flour, as opposed to normal flour, it has less gluten. Bit more expensive, but worth it.

Agree with temps. Just remember that if you are using a darker tin to drop the temp, as they get hotter.

    Good luck

Lol, you girls make me laugh. I had no idea what to put as the title and nearly wrote "funnel cakes" but then I think that's a real kind of cake, right? Hehe.

Clever me has been using packet mixes, but I've just had a look through some of the cake recipes in this forum and I think next time I will definitely try one from scratch because they sound delicious. I actually made one from scratch in this oven once, but can't remember if it "spouted" as well.

I'll also try putting a bit of foil over the pan next time too and see if it makes any difference. I'm always happy to "test" out a cake

Thanks for all your thoughts and ideas!

The only time I had this was when I was using baking powder instead of baking soda in a recipe so it was rising too much.

I have read that it can happen if the oven isn't sealed properly too.

cut a circle of baking paper and lay lightly on the top of the cake and remove half way through, so you still get that round ness but not a spout.

It is more than likely caused from teh air flow, if your oven seal is not 100% it will swirl in side with the fan.

If you're going to ice it, just cut off the spout :P
LOL, I'm useless. You should see the shapes I get when I make scones
    Good luck babe!
