oh mummyof4 that is not the news you were expecting. but maybe there was some genetic fault that they could not pick up. usually only chromosomes are done, and this does not find genetic defects only large structural rearrangements or trisomies, that kind of thing. and some parts of a placenta can be normal and other parts abnormal, so it depends which part of the placenta the sample was taken (confined placental mosaicism). don't mean to bore you but just because these tests came back normal there may have been a real reason, just might need a lot of investigating to find the reason.
i am sure there was nothing you could have done differently. and the midwife should not have lied to you. you know what you saw, and she should have told the truth. babies that small are very fragile and it was unfortunate that this happened and must have been very traumatic experience for you. i can only hope you are doing ok
