Starrysky - I'm really sorry about your brother's gf. I know what you mean about finding it hard to be a friend. Some people are really hard work. Maybe just settle for being there if she needs you? You have to take your own feelings about your MC into account too, it may dredge up a bit too much for you right now. I was also sorry to read about the work stuff. Its so so hard to "untell" people about a pregnancy. Kind of makes the "wait till 12 weeks" thing a bit easier to do, though we all know that that's no guarrantee either.
