The best card I have even gotten was each end of the card was DD handprint cut out and she painted them and then they were joined together with a strip of paper accordian folded with "I love you this much" printed on it. It was just gorgeous!!

I like ones done with photos. DD1 made a nice one, it was a cardboard photo frame with a heat cut out for the photo, she then decorated it. It had magnets on the back so it could go on the fridge.
I use a laminated bookmark she gave me which also had some coloured string on it with some beads that she threaded on!! It's gorgeous and I use it all the time!! It has a cute poem on it, a drawing on the other side!
I got a card last year from DD1 (kindy) that she had had to draw a picture of her choice on, and then the teacher wrote what she said were her favourite things to do with me. I loved it. She also decorated a little terracotta plant pot and they planted seedlings in them. This year on Valentine's Day (could be adapted to MD) I got a keychain thing from DD2 that was different coloured beads that she had threaded, with the key ring bit on one end and a love heart on the other end.
For Father's Day they did painted handprints on a tile, and a card along similar lines of the Mother's Day one.
Only kindy level, but I think older kids could just do a more detailed job IYKWIM.
Ohhh Lulu you just reminded me that last year Iz did this painting at kinder of me and it said - "My mummy loves running" and another said "My mummy loves making stuff"..... Not kidding they were hanging up around the kinder room and another one for another mum said "My mummy likes to sit on the couch to watch tv and eat pizza" OMG mortified much - was so glad I was sewing and running a lot leading up to mothers day last yearSorry to go OT chody - back to regular viewing!!!
