MGM, due to my milk problems, I learned about too much lactose in the colon can cause bleeding. It is like a kind of lactose intolerance because they only make a certain amount of lactase (enzyme for digesting lactose), and if you have a high fore-milk content, they get more than they can digest and the left over behaves like a baby who has no lactase - lactose intolerance. Therefore they can get the same symptoms as a lactose intolerant baby. You'll probably know if you have high foremilk content, and this far into feeding, it's probably not the issue although it can stretch this far before milk establishes (gawd knows mine did!). Allergies can also cause bowel bleeding. But my advice is the advice I took which is enrich the fat content of your milk - fish oils, EPO, coconut oil/milk, take lots of them! If you express, you'll notice after a while that the fatty lining on the top becomes thicker - better for babes.I do it still, even though it's rebalanced and will continue to because the DHAs are so good for brain development (and for my bod too). You can get really serious if it is an imbalance and block feed? But it's probably something worth checking with a doc really.
BW, they say to wait a week to see if symptoms pass, but different foods take different amounts of time to clear from teh breast milk. Technically, the breast milk is made fresh each feed, that's why you can have certain things at a certain time from feeding and it be ok. What happens is some foods/drinks take longer to clear from your system, and can therefore still get into the newly made milk. But I'd say broccoli would be ok the following day, but I'm guessing.
YAY Meg, lucky gal.
Grubi, I'd say don't worry about the book. Check out her website, the articles pretty much have the same info: Aware Parenting
And these are the articles Articles by Aletha Solter, take a look at the list, find the ones on "crying", different titles but with the same crying theme.
Well, I just read a book that told me to drink red wine or dark beer for good milk. The red puts resveratrol into it and the beer creates high supply. Woot. This is out of a book that discusses toxins in breast milk and how to create the perfect milk. So if they say it, it must be true.
*whistles*
