Hey... out of curiosity, what year are you guys gonna start your kids in 3yo or 4 yo kinder?
I was a feb bub and was sent to school when I was still 4 (turning 5 literally days into the start of school). Annnyway, I was always one of the younger ones in my class. I really think that socially and academically I could have done with another year under my belt. I wish Mum had started me the year after (so I would have been turning 6 at the start of Prep).
So,.... I could send Gabby to 3yo kinder next year when she'd turn 3 in the march or the year after when she'd turn 4... or do you reckon they wouldn't let me? That they'd make me send her the year she turned 3? 2008 rather than 2009. I'd like her to go to school in the year she turns 6. I personally think it's better for children to have that extra year at home... just from what I've seen.
What do you guys think?
-
Deb, in QLD as of this year, they have changed everything to match the rest of Aus (well in this small way anyway LOL!!). Kindy here is now called pre-prep and Jack will start that in 2009, and then prep at Primary School in 2010. Gaby would be the same as she is also born bw 01/07/04 and 30/06/05. Our kids will be in the younger half but not the youngest in the class. I don't think there is much flexibility for changing it.
Before the changes came in this year, Jack would have done kindy in 2009, preschool in 2010 and school in 2011 I think. That worried me as Jack will be better being the youngest rather than the oldest. He is developmentally the same as the older kids so gets along better with them. This causes a problem at day care actually. He wanted to be in the toddler room before he was legally old enough. Now the same thing is happening with his move to the next room. They say he is ready, when he spends time there he is happier than in his usual room, but they are not allowed to move him yet.
I am worried about the school thing too (which must mean we are both normal LOL!), but I am more worried about Jack being ready too early. Given that he can already read every letter of the alphabet, read some words, count to 10 (sometimes leaving out 4 though) and knows his shapes, colors etc, I am worried that he will be bored in prep. But I'm not sure that it would be good socially for him to start a year earlier so I'm not sure what I should be doing.
I am thinking that I will wait and see what happens in a year or so. I had no choice with booking him in for pre-prep (kindy) as you can only book them in for the year that fits the ages, so I guess I've done all I can do for now and will look at all the options down the track. This probably doesn't help you much, but I guess you at least know that you are not the only one worrying already!
-
Wow Mel... I definitely wouldn't be holding Jack back! How clever he is!
Gabby is nowhere near doing half of those things. I think she's going to be more like me... just a middle-of-the-range type student. So I'd like to keep her back.
I'm pretty sure you can keep them back.... after all, there's that many kids that aren't ready for prep (and parents are told so by the kinder teacher AND by the PS teacher) and the recommendation is to keep them back at home for another year but a lot of parents choose not to... not in the best interest of the child imo.
-
Ok Deb, that might be right that they can start school later but maybe not earlier. I'm not sure how that would work in Qld though. You have to book in for pre-prep (kindy) when they are born or they don't get in. So I don't think you would have the option for them to do another year at kindy. If they weren't ready for school they would probably have to do nothing for a year.
As you say, that prob won't be an issue for Jack though. He certainly is doing very well, but I do worry that that has its own set of problems as well. He might struggle in other areas and I'm very worried about him being bored at kindy and school. And not to mention the social side of things. But as I said, I guess I just wait and see and try not to worry too early.
-
Deb - I've been told I wont get Jenna into 3yokinder next year as the waiting lists will be too long for kids born that late in the year. Scary that April is alte!!! So we are going down other avenues - ie Steiner school which should be a little less mainstream and hopefully more uplifting for her. She wouldn't start til 4 anyway, but would be in playgroup at 3. I guess I'll try and get her name on the books around here, but I dont like my chances.
-
Dunno if I'll have the same issues here, Fi ;) The good ole country, hey?
However, I reckon Jenna would cope just fine going along to school the year she turns 5... but I guess it's a wait-and-see game all the same, hey?
Our friend's little boy will be going to 3yo kinder next year... he turns 3 in October this year. The age difference between he and Gabby seems SO huge so I can't imagine them going through kinder and school together (tho it'd be nice!).
Our 3yo kinder here only goes for 2 hours a week anyway (hardly seems worth it!) and the 4yo kinder only runs for 2 days. I don't think they can get the funding for more than that. On Thursdays the playgroup runs out of the kinder because it's not open on that day. I guess at least Gab will still have playgroup until she goes to school. All socialisation for her... and for me.
LOL... so funny. I got a late invite to a linen party on Friday night and you should have seen me jump! YES! I'LL BE THERE! Adult conversation (apart from Neil) and a chance to make friends!! LOL Desperate or what?
So funny tho... everyone was there. The lady from the milkbar, the lady from the post office... small town hey? Everyone knows everyone!
I got chatting to one of the ladies that runs family day care from her house. Asked her how long she had been in Dunkeld and she said she'd been here since she was 5. "Well and truly a local then!" I said. Um... no... apparently not. You're not considered a "local" here unless you have ancestors buried in the cemetary!! LOL
-
Debbie - you should know its the same in Geelong. Shane is almost a local in Portarlington, but not really..... He was only based there for 18-20years or so, and his parents only lived there for 40y!!
I just thought about the preschool thing - Melanie - I would use preschool as a chance to just work on the socail and physical side of being a kid. After all, they aren't concentrating too much on the other stuff at that age, so if your son is already pretty sharp, he would maybe enjoy the social element. Just a thought.
-
We have it totally different in NSW again. Pre school is pretty much the same as day care. Just a different name.
Then we have Kindergaten which is the first year of Primary School (big school) they go to the infants department from Kindy to year 2. Then Primary is year 3 til 6.
They can start school provided they turn 5 by the end of July. Or if you don't feel they are ready you can hold them back. Not sure if there is a legal age they have to had started school by.
Eg, Brandon was born 22.7.04. So he could have started school the year he turned 5, he would have be 4 for 6 months of schooling, I chose to hold him back though as I didnt feel he was ready. He started at 5 and a half.
Noah could start school this year, his birthday is May 10th 2002. Again I didn't feel he was ready, (damn it) and have held him back. He will be 5 and 9 months, so one of the older kids but I think more socially and emotionally ready then.
Oh yeah, thought of something else. In our pre schools - daycare. The year before they go to school they begin a school readiness progam. I thik the idea is to get them to recognise their own name, wrok independantly, numbers and all that stuff.
Before then it's pretty much play and have fun. Learning how to socialise and other stuff :)
-
Hmmm I always felt like a local in Geelong... guess it's a matter of perspective, hey?
The socialisation stuff is definitely important. I can tell you what... you can just TELL the kids that didn't have any pre-schooling of any description. They don't cope well with the first year at school at all!
Then, of course, there's kids that are never gonna cope. School ain't for everyone, hey?
-
Yes, I think the socialisation and school readiness would be the best benefit of pre-school. Jack has been going to day care since 7 months but its not the same really. I just hope he gets in to pre-school. I didn't grow up in Brissy so I didn't know I had to put his name down at birth. By the time I found out he is a long way down the list. But he might get in, people put their kids name down at several centres so apparently he does still have a chance. He is on 3 lists.
I just think it's so hard to know the right thing to do sometimes.
I have a colleague who's daughter just started at a Steiner school up here but I don't know a lot about it. What are the main benefits of that Fi? I don't know if they do pre-school here or just start at primary but possibly it could be an option for Jack later.
-
Woo hoo - Tom slept through last night for the first time. He went down at about 7pm, woke for a feed at 8:30, then slept through until after 6am this morning! Let's hope this is the start of it!!
DH left this morning for his 8 days away. Poor Jack cried and cried when we said goodbye to DH at the airport. He keeps saying 'daddy coming back, daddy coming back" but seems to be ok now.
-
Xander was born 1st july, and cannot start 4yo kinder until next year. He can count to 50, write his on name, i very articulate and socially ready. He has to wait until next year. My nephew on the other hand was born late april, so is going this year. He has speech probs, cant count, write, and socially is a bully, but his mum doesnt care, she just want him out of the house. So she's sending him. I've talked t the MCHN about what i can do to put Xander in (i cant afford 3yo programs, and from the sounds of it, they would just bore him anyway) And its doesnt matter about how smart they are, they have to go in their age groups.
Declan i will see when he comes along, From memory he will start in 2010 (4yo's) and i will see how he is then, as to whether or not i will keep him home. Anneliese will go the year after (i think... oo ho to think properly right now!!)
-
I just had to post Declan did his first wee in the potty!! Both boys are walking around naked (its too hot for anything else) and i saw him about to start peeing, so i sat him on the potty, and he did a wee!! i made such a good fuss about it, he wont get off the potty now LOL
-
-
ANd he just did 3 wee's around the house when i wasnt looking LOL.
Its about 42 here at the moment, and im about to hop offline and turn my computer off, see if i can cool the house down... im dying in here!!
-
What's going on in here. 4 days without anyone posting !!
Simone, YAY for Declan doing wee's on the potty, hopefully this is the start of his TTing for you.
Melanie, how are you going being husband less. Poor Jack, how is he going missing Daddy now, I would have been crying along with him. YAY for Tom sleeping through for you. What a champ, hope he's still doing it.
Deb, how is Gab going ? And Little Bee ?? Oh yeah, must not forget about you.
Fi, how are Jenna and Hamish going ? Hope all is well with you all.
Belinda, how are the boys going ? I don't blame you for being concerned about Richard, doesn't sit well with me either.
Tanya, how are you and the girls going ?? What about your bump, hope it's growing nicely :)
Hi to anyone else I have missed, hope your little ones are going great too.
We are off to Walking With Dinosaurs today, taking Brandon and Noah in with Mark, Teh is staying with Mum. She's too norti to take along. LOL. Plus I think she would get scared. I called the arena this morning and found out I can take a camera along so hopefully I will get some good pictures. Not allowed to use a flash in there though, not like it will distract the damn dinosaurs is it ??
Going to be a stinker here today and worse tomorrow. Of course neither of the cars have air cond that works.
Went with my brothers GF yest for her 4d scan. She is supposed to be 31+1 weeks and bub is measuring 33+4 weeks. He already weighs 2.2kg !! He is going to be a big boy by the looks of it. Ultrasound tech even said he was going to be a big bub. Simone's brother was a 10 pounder so..... I told her to get all thoguhts of him being big out of her head, she doesn't need to go into labour worrying about how big he is, and doubting her abilities. Simone is only about 4"9 too. Still you only grow a bub as big as you can handle so.
Have sent her to the spinning babies site to try to learn how to get him into a good position, he's still pretty high and not set into her pelvis yet. Early days I know, but if she can help get this bubba in a good position I think it might help her when D day comes.
Tehya is going good, being a right cow though. She has came up with a few fluid filled spots on her arms and legs. I thought they may be chicken pox, but they start on the torso. She has been immunised but I have heard you can still get a mild case. Took her to the Dr's and he said it's a viral thing (translates to I have no idea what it is) She has been scratching them so obviously they are itchy. They don't look like bites though ?? Wierd.
TTing is still going well. She woke up dry again this morning, although it doesn't happen every morning, we do get more dry ones than wet ones, so we are getting there. She is down to waking only once overnight so that is a step up, but she is going to bed later so..
Got built in's put into Tehya and Noah's rooms on Thursday, gives them abit more room in their bedrooms. Although I must say, floor to ceiling glass doors aren't the greatest ideas in a kids room !! How early can I get them polishing them for me :)
OK so now you are all caught up on me and mine, what's happening with everyone else.
Hope you all have a great weekend :D
-
Yay for the wardrobes, Trish. We need doors on ours in the kid's rooms. Looks so funny with shelving and hanging area but no doors! Better than nothing I guess.
Hope you have fun walking with dinosaurs. That'd be SO cool!
Hope everything goes with with Simone's birth. Nothing like being told the baby is big to scare someone, hey? Don't ya just wish they'd keep their traps shut? They can be wrong too!
Not much happening here. Lots of rain... and all the fish in the pond are dead :( Neil left a note telling me they'd drowned... funny bugger.
Gab is fine and dandy... driving me nuts but I think she's a bit bored. We'll be in Geelong early Feb so that's something to look forward to.
Little Bee is still making me queasy at times (the heat isn't helping) but apart from that it's pretty boring. When does 2nd Trimester start? 14 weeks?
-
Deb, LOL at Neil, funny man. Aww poor Gab being bored, it's hard to keep them entertained all of the damn time isn't it. Even though Tehya has siblings to play with she still loves to annoy the crap out of me and sit on my lap for half the day.
Yeah I think 2nd try starts at 14 weeks. Hey, where's your preg belly hun ??
We are thinking of getting the guy back in a few months to fit out the inside of our wardrobe, it has 3 sliding doors and all hanging space, it is crap !! Mark cashed in some of his shares from work to pay for the wardrobes. Hope they don't boom to $100 each now, although if they do I'm sure we'd be yanking more out. LOL.
Oh great news too, Marks boss pulled in for a meeting yest, he is giving him a promotion, so hopefully this year he will get his 5% increase as he does every year and the following year we are hoping for 10%. WOO HOO. more money !!!
-
Woo hoo for the promotion, Trish! Nothing like a bit of extra $$ to help out.
The preggy belly is hidden under the many layers of fat that I've collected over the last couple of years. Totally gross!! LOL
Still so hard to believe I'm preggo anyway. I fully expected to still be on the TTC wagon at this stage.
-
Simone, well done to Declan on using the potty. Hopefully he'll use it more now and go around the house less! I can see what my life is going to be like soon when I bite the bullet and put Jack in undies!
Deb, good to hear that all is well with the pg and little bee.
Trish, excellent news on the promotion. The dinosaurs sounds great, you'll have to let us know how they like it.
I am doing surprising well without DH. We are half way there now, just 4 more days until he gets back. Jack is certainly missing him, but is doing well. In fact he has been SOOO good. Everyone keeps telling him to be good for mummy and he is! DH and I were both nearly crying at the airport. I only didn't as I was trying to not make Jack more upset, but there were tears in my eyes. Poor DH found it very hard as well. I miss him too of course.
Tom has been unsettled the last few days but is sleeping really well now after his swimming lesson this morning. He hasn't slept through again, but has only woken up once a night each night since then so I'm pretty happy with that. He is having his 4 months vax on Monday and I'm not looking forward to that!
Well, DH gets back on Wed, then we are all off for a week's holiday on Saturday. I can't wait. And then the weekend after we get back is Jack's 2nd birthday pary so it is all happening. Never a dull moment in our house. Soon I won't be able to say I have two under two anymore LOL!!
-
LOL Deb, I was talking about the belly on your Av, but hey, the one on you is fine too ;)
Melanie, yay on being halfway there already. Only 4 more big sleeps to go. Sorry to hear that Tom has been unsettled. Fingers crossed he goes well with his needles on Monday.
The dinosaurs were FANTASTIC !!! I think I loved it more than Noah. As soon as I sort out what pictures out of the nearly 200 !! that I took I will link you girls to them.
Noah is in bed asleep and Tehya apparently slept half the day away at mum's house. So of course she will be awake late until late. Mark wants a bit tonight. I am so damn tired though, but as he went and bought me some Turkey I think I might indulge him ;)
ETA, here is a link to some of the pictures from today at Walking With Dinosaurs please let me know if it doesn't work :)
Ok, so apparently it doesn't work. Will stuff around and see what I can do.
-
MMM.... turkey :) Im drinking a past its date riesling, but its all o've got and i needed one :)
-
Look at my AV! Yay!!
Trish - duh Debbie... of course that's what you meant!! LOL
-
Deb, you looks just gorgeous :)
-
YAY Deb, I love your AV. Looking very sexy there huni ;)
-
Hi gals. LOL at the Turkey - truly the way to a gal's heart so it seems!! One of these days I'll be past being pg and bfing!
Jack is starting to get restless waiting for DH to get back. Poor kid. 8 days might seem like a long time at that age - LOL it seems like a long time at my age! I am starting to think that he remembers when he went on a plane last July. He knows he is going on a plane soon (sat) and for days has been saying "jack go on a plane". But today he started saying "look out the window on the plane" and "go down steps when get off the plane" which is what happened in July (Good old VirginBlue!). Surely he couldn't remember that far back - he would only have been about 17 months old.
Tom had his 4 month vax today. Poor kid sobbed. I feel so guilty he's getting lots of extra hugs today! He has gained 1230g in 7.5 weeks. Wow, good to know the BM is doing it's job!
-
Mel - awww poor Jack! Time goes so slow when you're a kid, hey?
I've been a good little housewife today (well, compared to what I've been like lately ;) ). I've got curried sausages going in the slow cooker AND I cooked a chocolate cake from scratch (with yummy icing and everything!).
Gotta love the good days!
Got some great pics of Gab licking the beater - chocolate all over her face. Better pop them on her site at some stage.
-
Deb - we must be being good girls together. I unpacked some boxes from teh garage, did about 4 days worth of dishes, and just dropped in here to check in before i dive into Anneliese's room and the hallway stuff (chest of drawers, linen cupboard and hallway stand). And i ave washing to put out, bring in and loads to put on, so i have my work cut out and its 3.30 already... only got 2.5 hours before i have to pick the kids up!!
-
Good housewives :) I had a gf over for most of the day so not alot got done.
Deb, it's still way too hot here to pull out the SC. Does it count that I made blueberry muffins yesterday from a pack ?? Will check out Gab's pictures as soon as I finish this post.
Simone, your a good girl too. It's amazing how much you can get done without any kids around to "help" you.
Melanie, Poor Jack, although he does sound very cute talking about the plane. Not much longer now until DH comes back. So who do you think missed him more ;) I would miss Mark if he was away for that long, but I think it would be harder on Noah.
I hope Tom handled his vax without any problems. Sounds like booby milk is working fantastic for him, WTG !!
Tehya is being a nutter as usual. She will not let me dress her at all. It's painful to get organised to go out. She wants to be naked all the time. The minute she gets up her nappy comes off for the potty adn it's quickly folled by her pj top or nighty. I ask if she wants undies and I get No undies !! This morning I was laying in bed with her giving her some booby and then she stopped to have a chat with me, booby was covered up then. Then she looks at me and says where is it ?? I didn't answer her, so she ask's me again Where is it ? As she is pulling the covers off me and my nighty to the side and I say to her, Where's what ? she says This !! and promptly latches back on. Had to have a laugh at her.
She is strutting her stuff atm, naked with a pair of sandles on. What a fashion statement.
I was going through some of Tehya's birth pics yest and decided to make up a montage of our labour and birth. Feel free to check it out and let me know what you think, if you haven't seen it already ;) Montage
Hope everyone has a great day :D
-
Tish, your montage was just amazing. I cried the whole way through!! It was great of you to share such a beautiful time of your life with us!! And that pool! It must've taken ages to fill ;) Sounds like Tehya and declan are PITA in the same league LOL Declan refuses to get dressed or put a napy onm have a bath, go to bed... at least he still eats (dont think he would ever give that up!) And it just gets frustrating... as t=Xander then starts doing the same thing!! But at least he goes to the potty everytime... I think we may have begun the Terrible Two's...
Anyway, must keep decluttering my house... will pop backin later
xx
-
Wow Trish. I just checked out your montage and I am still bawling! That is soooooo beautiful.
Will bbl to post more.
-
Awww Shucks, thanks girls :)
Simone, actually it didn't take that long. Not that I can really remember it though either. The effort to get that damn thing out here though was hard though, I ordered it in from America as it has an inflatable bottom, and I couldn't find one here in Oz. The thing took months and turned up the day after I went out and bought a second pool. I think it came about 2 weeks before Tehya was born.
Hmm Teh just peed in the toyroom, in her sandles. YUCK.
Tehya seems to be loving her dummy more and more the older she gets. What is the go there ?? She is my only bub to have a dummy and even though Im keen on getting it off her, I don't think she is too happy about it.
Yesterday afternoon we had to go into the shopping centre to go to the bank, Tehya had been asleep and still had her dummy in her mouth. I walked past this lady carrying her baby, (younger than Teh) anyway, I heard her say, Look that baby has a dummy !! Now was she implying tht my baby shouldn't have one or what ?? I just said Yes she does !! and kept walking. Maybe I am being just sensitive to it. LOL.
-
Awwww it's lovely, Trish :) Such an inspirational birth - so great to see!
-
Hi girls... :)
I find it very hard to keep up in here, and I feel bad for not posting personals so I don't post...
Anyway, all is well here. Girls are doind ok. Had some issues over the passed couple of days with Alecia... but that's just normal teenage stuff.
Violet is doing well. I wen't to the train station to drop Alecia off because she was going to see one of her friends and a man came up to me and pointed at Violet and said, "she's gorgeous isn't she?"
To which I replyed..."they all are!"
He said,"yeah they are, but she is just stunning!!".... LOL, bit of a weirdo tho!!
Check out Alecis page here . She is really turnong into a woman... scary!! LOL
Emily cam into me while I was getting dressind int he bathroom the other day. She had hold of a spider by the leg telling me it was dead. She then dropped it and it took off. I said, "it's not dead".
She picked it up again and said< "it's got a picture on it". So i took a closer look while it was crawing up her arm and it was a red back!! I swiftly made sure the lizard made a snack of her!!
Anyway... I am sure I have gone on enough!!
TL
Tanya
-
Tanya, OMG at the red back. Still I wold have freaked it the kids had any spider in the hands, dead or alive.
Wow Alecia is growing up, I guess it's time they do that hey. Same as Joel. I just noticed Alecia's b day. It's 1 day before and 1 year after Joels :)
Don't try to keep up in here. Although it has been pretty quiet lately. Just post occassionally so we know how your going :)
-
My gosh Tanya!! Alecia certainly does look like a young woman! Great photos of her! She looks so much like you in some of them.
TOTALLY freaking about the redback!! I would have screamed to high heaven!! LOL Lucky Em has a Mum that takes those sorta creatures in her stride. How on earth did she manage to not get bitten??
Ewww @ that creepy guy at the train station. Did you keep Violet well and truely in your grip after that?? LOL What a strange thing to say...
-
Tanya  at the spider!! Sometimes wish they were just a little more scared of things... And Alecia is beautiful. My sister is a 91 bub and has the same anline talk, and similar webapge :) will have to find itout... When she was a bridesmaid at my wedding, all XH's mates were cracking onto her, thinking she was 19... she's just turned 13 OMG!!
-
oohh at the spider too! I would have freaked for sure!
I"m so tired today after Tom's 2am waking and Jack starting the day at 4:30 (I think it was the heat). Tom has been unsettled still but has had some good sleeps in between. Poor Jack is really missing DH. He has been saying "kiss daddy" all day and sometimes nearly crying when he says it. It's quite heartbreaking actually. Thank goodness Glenn gets back tomorrow. Tonight was the worst - I rang DH for him to say goodnight to Jack as he was expecting, and he was in bed asleep after drinking too much today. The receptionist told me. So I had to tell poor Jack who had been looking forward to talking to daddy all day that he couldn't talk to daddy after all. I am really peed off (Jack repeats everything he hears so I try not to even think swear words now LOL).
Oh well, at least I get him home tomorrow. I'm not sure Trish who has missed him more LOL, but it has definitely been harder for Jack. Although today hasn't been the best day for me. Bring on tomorrow afternoon!
-
Well i am back again, just letting you know i am still about :)
Computer drove me crazy for awhile and with holidays been keeping busy, down to one kid on Monday, wont know myself on Mondays and Fridays from next week, going to be sooo quiet!
Will be back to read up later on :) well if you talked too much i wont be reading back too far lol
ETA: YAh there wasnt much to read, not going to respond to it all but nice to know you are all going well :)
-
Hey everyone my names sarah im a mother of identical twin girls im new to this but very interested in making new friends.
