Mel - actually today is the date of an ancient Babylonian festival celebrating the son of Isis - it wasn't until 350 AD that Pope Julius I decided that the celebration of Christ's birth would be moved from September to align with the old pagan festivals - Saturnalia, Yule (birth of the pagan sun god - Mithras) , Winter Solstice - but it was the Babylonian festival that determined the date of the 25th of December.
