hello ladies! hope the 2 meeting up at the gold coast have a great day today.
well, i've been having horrible nights/evenings. got her royal highness to sleep on her own again once yesterday. yehey! win! but then, after waking at around 5:45, a catnap on the bb at about 7:30, she didn't go to bed until after 10!!! and she's also been waking up early 5:30(?) and screaming whilst asleep and needs to be rocked. *sigh....one really tired mumma here. oh, and the other night, she decided it was awake time at 3 in the morning. dp tried to put her to sleep but she was just awake. finally put her on the bb lying down and we both fell asleep.
congratulations on the new family member auntie hayley! lucky maddie having a cousin close in age. the youngest cousin max has is already 7 this year. am relying on close friends to have babies so she'll have playmates.
lp, as you said, your instinct hasn't let you down so far. and good to see a chn. although i've sort of found a gp that i liked well enough, i prefer to take max to the community health centre for her shots coz' i figure that those nurses give them to hundreds of babies monthly and would be more proficient at it. same thing with check-ups, the chn would be more familiar with kids and be more current w/ child health issues since that's their specialty whereas gp's have just general knowledge.
hair...yep, losing it. debating whther to keep it short or start growing it so i can tie it back...prventing max from pulling on it.

clothes, max is still in 000s. some are a bit tight but most are still ok. also have some smaller 00s that we're already wearing. she's about 6Kg now and maybe 62-63cm in length. will have 'official' stats when she goes for 4 mo. check.

md - fantastic news that Miss E is sleeping well for you.
lp - i hope Scarlet is ok. Hannah had her needles yesterday afternoon, and she has a mild temp this morning too. Not sure if it's from the needles, as Jess has been sick with high temps and vomiting.
fianne - that's great that Max is still settling herself. Hannah has days where she is happy for me to put her in her cot awake, and others when she cries if i leave her.
My GP yesterday said that Hannah was a little underweight according the graph in her book. I don't know how she can be, as she feeds every 3 hours and i'm pretty sure she gets plenty of milk. She weighed 6kg and was 61.5 cm long. It got me a little worried, but she has chubby little legs and a double chin. GP said that it would be ok to start her on solids now, so this morning she tried some rice cereal. She seemed to enjoy the first taste, and kicked her legs when she saw the spoon coming again, but she screwed her face up when it went in.lol. Will see if she gets excited tomorrow.
jazmum - Asha is only 6.4kgs and 62 1/2 and there was no talk of her being underweight? i think its about the line they follow in their book as they grow shes probably just due for a growth spurt, wouldnt worry about it.. thats cute re the rice cereal Asha starts kicking her legs and getting excited when she sees me with a spoon n little pot of food lol

Okay, spoke to GP.. She apoligised for confusing me ... She had only just got back from holidays, Thats why the surgery was so busy.. anyway..
She said i should start Scarlet on solids, give her tastes, because she's way over double her birthweight & has a toothy-peg that has just cut through (i didn't even notice! but i checked & she does have a little bit of it that has cut through! can't believe how good she's been, hope the rest of teething if this easy, lol) & i should give her 2 bottles of water a day after we're established on 2 serves of solids per day (which she says will take 2 weeks) the water is to replace one formula feed to even out the calories from the solids so she doesn't put on too much weight. She emailed me a program to use that goes in 2 weekly intervals just to use as a guide because i told her solids are scary LOL
weeks 1 & 2 goes;
early AM bottle
AM bottle
Lunchtime; half of lunch bottle, solids (teaspoon or two), other half of bottle.
PM bottle
Late PM bottle
Weeks 3 & 4;
Drinks of water through out the day.
AM bottle
Lunch bottle, half, solids (2 courses, same type as above plus new taste), other half.
PM bottle
late PM bottle
And so on...
so it's pretty slow & steady.
Does that sound right experienced mummies?

hey lp - good that she talked to you over the phone - that's a dedicated gp . slow and steady is good, but still not sure why she needs to replace the milk with food. Did she say that the milk has more calories? I guess go with what you feel comfortable with, and in the end, your GP isn't going to ask you to do anything that will harm Scarlet :)
noni - Hannah is almost 5 months old, so almost a month older than Asha, but still smaller!! lol.

Jazmum Guess what those graphs are based on bottlefeeding not breastfeeding babies. You can download the breastfed baby charts from the WHO organization website - bet she doesn't look underweight then! Bfed babies tend to grow in spurts, they chub up then have a length spurt and get longer and thinner, then they chub up again. If you're happy that she's feeding well and thriving I wouldn't worry about it. I was told several times that H was "underweight" when actually she was just tall and lean, I stopped going to the MCHN cos it was undermining my confidence.:

it sure is weird seeing the belly buddies for sept 08 - wow!! i also look at preg women all the time and feel all gooey about it. just like i used to look at women with prams with gorgeous bubs when i was preg. we are all part of such a special club ladies.
Jazmum - i wouldnt worry too much about Hannah's weight - averages are just averages! that said if it was N i am sure i would worry LOL! at least she gave you some practical ideas. were your other girls small at this age?

Hi to everyone else!!!
well N is changing at the moment... he has woken up every night this week for a feed in the middle of the night... at diff times 11.30, 12.30, 4am, 1am... i know i know this isnt bad as it is once only but he has been sleeping through sincehe was about 7 or 8 weeks so it is odd for him. he also needs quite often a 3rd side to get to sleep... ading all this together, and his weight (7.35kg) and the fact he has tooth buds (but no cutting through yet) I am wondering should i be introducing some solids? I dont want to start him too late but i cant see him not needing them til 6 months.. what do you all think? he is a big boy - still feeding the same amt during day (he would have 5 or sometimes 6 feeds b/n 6am and 8pm and has now added this other one)
Also wanted to ask if ppl have been buying car seats? we have to do this this weekend as N is nearly too big for his capsule... (another thing that weas meant to be 6 months ha ha!!) - am looking at safe n sound maxirider and also turn a tot. anyone opinions???

Marydean - I hope Rory is just tall and lean too, I really hope he isn’t underweight. 6 & 1/2 Kgs and he is one of the oldest in the group..... He is almost the same weight as Fianne's Max but he is a month older! I feel the same way about the MCHN, mine doesn’t seem to know what she is doing.

Rory woke up at 5:00am this morning Arghhhhh! I had trouble getting him back down but I suspect that’s because DH got up to him first. DH has a habit of turning the bedroom light on instead of the lamp and looking at him and telling him to go to sleep which just makes him think its play time. When I go into him I dont look into his eyes, I turn on the soft lamp and don’t talk to him. Gawd I sound mean don’t I
Whoohooo we have got a lovely package for our holiday to Phuket. We are staying at the Bursari, a nice little boutique hotel. I don’t like these really big popular hotels. Plus it’s going to be our belated honeymoon so we need something private and romantic hehe. Now I just need to sort out my passport, its still in my maiden name!

Is Noah putting everything in his mouth and watch you as you eat? Perhaps his waking in the middle of the night is an indication that he is ready for some solids. You could try them, if you want, or just continue to feed him when he wakes.
I haven't looked at a carseat yet. We had the maxirider for the girls when they went from the capsule, but i think it's changed since then. (is it the one with the arm rests on the sides?) Zoe still uses hers now.
Hannah will probably need to stay in her capsule a little longer than the 6 months, depending on how much weight she puts on between now and then.
renee - lucky you. sounds beautiful. My dh will be so jealous. He has been wanting to take me somewhere like that for ages, but I'm a bit of a homebody -especially since having the girls. (don't i sound like a bore LOL )
Dont worry JAz im a homebody too! Last time we went to Bali I almost had a nervous breakdown LOL haha. Everything seemed so different over there. I called my mum every day and I got teary every time. I had a blast though.
Pregpan - we're not looking at getting a carseat yet, but when we do it is likely to be the maxirider.
Interesting that Hannah (underweight) and Scarlet (overweight) have both been told to start solids.
Renee - DH is the same, can't help talking to her and looking at her when she should be going to sleep. He's in there now, singing away.
Oh cally, Scarlet isn't overweight for her length, Big all over. I wasn't told to do it because of weightloss but because she has way more then doubled her birthweight.
to those who asked about the flight i am still very anxious about it but its kinda been numbed by the fact that we might not be going now because we might not have enough money.

Hi Pregpan, I'll be holding off on solids until after 6 mths (it's more work than it's worth at this age, IMO)! If N is having a growth spurt (or if he's just thirsty from it being summer) he will feed a bit more often but then your supply will adjust. Maybe try squeezing an extra feed or two in the day, just offer and see if he wants it? BTW teeth or no teeth has got nothing to do with introducing food, they just gum everything until they get their molars much later. Solids has more to do with the tongue-reflex disappearing (pushing food out of the mouth) and gut maturity. Sorry if that contradicts what everyone else is saying, I read up a lot with DD1 as we have the allergy thing to watch out for. You'll do what feels right for you.
I was just reading about the maxirider today, DD1 was tall and we had to get another booster seat which wasn't much better so I think the maxirider will be the way to go. However I don't think it's got the tilt function, so E will probably go into the old car seat (S&S Discovery) on the tilted back option for the first couple of months. I'm keeping her in the capsule as long as I can tho, she's still a very wobbly sitter LOL.
Cally, the bebepod's a bit of hit, although she's still drooping sideways. It'll be really useful in about a month's time I think.
Renee -It's not rocket science is it? DH does the same thing, picks her up, unwraps her, looks her square in the eyes, then it's LETS PARTAY! LOL:

In the end you'll be soooo glad you're going the flight stuff will be easier (remember how easy those blood tests became when you were pregnant? Feel the fear and do it anyway)!

Jaz, I have the WHO charts and H is only slightly below average for her weight and height, but she's still on the chart - the *average* weight for her age is 6.5kg and the length is 64cm. She may be making her own growth pattern too.
Renee, your trip sounds divine, you will have a great time. Maybe Alister and Rory will just be world famous basketballers when they are big LOL.
Pregpan, you could give Noah a try and see if that makes a difference with the night waking, but he could just be going through a developmental spurt too. They can sometimes get really ratty at this age as they want to do more than just sit and look and want to move around, but their little bodies haven't caught up yet, so maybe he will start doing something new soon. We never got a capsule, so we already have the car seat, it's just a steelcraft premier one. I would definately get the maxirider as it goes up to 26kg.
Hayley, congrats on to your SIL. It is very scary when they don't just cry when they are born, I know exactly how she would have been feeling.
LP. I'm glad your GP explained things a bit better for you. It does make sense when she puts it like that, but do what you *feel* is right, you can always stop if you don't think she is liking it much and try again later.
Fianne, A has been having restless nights too. He gets really congested if he is under the air con too much and he wakes up with a blocked nose. Hopefully missy will go back to normal for you soon.
Marydean, I bet you were most impressed with Miss E's sleep efforts (even if your boozies weren't LOL).
Wet, windy and chilly here today. Its just been a real sleety rain all day. The kids are like caged animals ATM. Normally I can let them out on the verandah, but because of the direction its coming from, its all wet so they have to stay inside.

Sorry its been awhile but finally back on deck after our christmas down south. DS did so well on the 3 day drive - I couldn't have asked for better really as it was a long long trip! But to pay us back she is now heading into her 5th week of 2-3hour sleeps overnight - aagghh!! Not loving that at all and not sure what to do about it. She did do a lot of growing while we were away and found out last week that she has her two bottom teeth coming through but seriously!! I so need sleep! ANyone else having same probs? Not sure if I should just ride it out and hope it will end soon or if we should try resettling her - she seems to take proper feeds each time. Last night was one of her worst with closer to 2 hour feeds and pretty unsettled today. I am banking on fact that it will end soon and hoping that it isn't a pattern that she is going to stick to...
Not a great christmas present at all.
We had our vaccinations in the middle of it and she was fine and have moved her into her big girl cot so have really messed her around a bit so in some ways i can't blame her...
Anyway I will stop whinging and go rest and hope you all had a wonderful christmas.
hey all just a q to all those experienced in starting solids
Asha is now eating one serve of solids a day and has been for the last 6 days we are alternating one day fruit maybe with rice cereal next day veges, so far she has tried cool banana,warm banana and rice cereal (her fave), cool apple, warm and cool pear, warm sweet potato and warm sweet potato and corn.. at the moment she has one serving say 2 tablespoons worth each day at 5pm.. what i am wondering is when should i give her more.. shed eat more if i gave it to her lol but im not really sure what i am doing, shes going great with solids no tummy aches or vomiting when should i increase another half or full serving? was thinking breakfast would be next? and should i be worried she hasnt started drinking less even though she has the one serve of solids now? she has 4 150mls bottles and 1 180 a day

Rach you are doing fantastically well with all those changes and some toothies in there as well! I read somewhere there's a Wonderweek right around 4 months old (week 19 or something), E was really unsettled last week too, and then suddenly she's happy & settled again. Hope M will turn a corner and suddenly you'll get a full nights sleep :crossfingers:.
Noni, I really can't remember what I did last time with regards increasing the amount (10 yrs is a long time) tho I vaguely remember sticking to just one little meal for a few weeks. There's a fantastic baby food book with recipes by Robin Barker, recommend it if you can get a copy (saw it at Big W)- I just did what she said to LOL.

Noni, it's called Baby & toddler meals. I'm pretty sure it wouldn't have been more than $20-25 at BigW (but I think it was less) - it's prolly exxy on Amazon cos it was published in Australia not US. I saw it at Dymocks the other day too but I didn't look at the price there.
It was really good because i was able to change the recipes for the low-allergy stuff without too much hassle but other books had heaps of milk and eggs and tricky stuff in it.
sounds good might have to look in big w :) did H have an allergy? or are most books for the next stage uo when they are allowed milk and stuff?? the other day someone was telling me how much her bubs (over ten years ago mind u) loved pumpkin and potato with lots of milk and cheese all mashed up i didnt say anything but i was sure dairy comes later dosnt it???
still ive seen worse.. i worket at kfc in my teens and regularly saw mothers give their bubs mashed potato and gravy eeeeeekkkk chicken fat and powdered potato how lovely!!

Noni, there is a thread in the Breastfeeding, Bottlefeeding and Solids forum about starting solids. It's a sticky thread so it's easy to find. There is a list in there too of what to give when as some foods are better started when they are older. Very handy it is. If you feel she is ready for more, start adding another meal, like breakfast instead of increasing the one she has. She still only has a small gut and you may make her feel really bloated and refluxy if you give her more then, but adding a meal should be fine. I brought a womens weekly baby and toddler food cookbook and it has some great recipes in it - even great ones for the whole family too that can be adapted for baby.
thanx sherie, really not sure if shes ready for more or not i mean i think she might be but i am a bit confused.. might give her a few more weeks on one meal for her body to adjust, (as well as we are going to melbourne, i think lol, so it will be easier with her just on one meal i know selfish!!!!) but seeing as she is so little its probably better to wait right? or am i just being selfish here?
oh god Noni dont talk about KFC!!!!!!! Oh I would kill for KFC :( I havent had fast food in a week....and Im freaking out. I need to get rid of 6kgs to get back to my normal weight.....it just isnt happening!

renee - in my experience (lol because i am so wise now i have lost 4kgs at ww hahahaha) if u deny yourself you will inevidably (unless you are extrememly strong willed) end up bingeing on it and eat more then you would have, or binge on something u dnt really want.. id say you should eat something small from there and even it out by eating well the rest of the week gotta treat yourself every now and then.. haha last night i ate a flake and a mars bar!! needless to say today ive been alot more strict hahaha

Renee you can blame me, I dont mind :D. Logan hasnt slept through since he was little. He only wakes once though (except the other night) so I don't mind to much. Shouldn't complain he is a great little bub who spends most of the day laughing and playing.
