can i just say that when that bananna shortage was on i was actually teaching year 10 economics and it was the absolute best teaching tool to explain how demand/supply affect price. the kids were all referring to banannas in their end of year exam LOL
when it said to draw a diagram to help explain your answer, one of them drew a bananna and coloured it yellow. i am such a good teacher!
-
LOL Rainy!!!sorry - Ginger!!!
MD - v impressed yo uare having a banana while you work - v healthystudy snacks. mine were never that healthy. my current fave snack is carmens muesli bars - yum! i get the apricot and almond ones. yummo! i love telopea park too - i go there every day on weekends... until manuk pool opens - then i spend most of summer there!
Arte - will your mum still come up - i guess then she can watch W for some of the time at first for you? it is soo exiting it is all so soon.
-
Arte I wish one of us could be there with you (or looking after W). I am so excited for you and cant believe how close it is now.
MD well done on the healthy eating. I have been craving lots of fruit lately (I think it is the heat). Bring on all the summer fruits I say mmmm magoes and nectarines.
PAP and Trill I wanna come meet up with you too.
G I meant to say the other day that if you had of given us more notice we all could have come to your place for a big BB sleep over while DH is away.
Noni I agree with Trill about the BF. No matter what you choose though your still a great mummy.
PAP I am so glad that there are a few of us adjusting to life with two, its nice knowing I have somewhere to come when I need advice. I am feeling really good and really excited about labour. I am determined to make this labour different but am a lot more opened minded this time round.
How is everyone down south coping with the storm? Is it as bad as they say?
I am so over the heat already, I dont know how anyone copes when heavily pg in summer. The last two summers up here have been great but I think we might be in for a hot one this year. I think we will be spending loads of time in the paddling pool lol. I cant believ how crazy this weather is though, storms in the south and record breaking heat up here.
-
Arte - Well we will all be thinking of you & cheering you on. I'm sure your DH will be doing the same. YES its scary to think of how careful you must be with what you say, especially with clever W. Good memory or what?!
Ginger - Yes you are a great teacher!! Do you miss it at all & will you ever go back?? I love L & R's invite, loved it so much I've just emailed Maz for M's hi 5 invite.
Oz - I wish it was hot here! I know it must be hard for you though with a belly. Not long now, I am too excited!
Trill - I am so darn relieved for you & A. But like you said something is still not right, I hope the paed can help you out & give you some answers.
Noni - Go for it & give it another shot!
As for sleep, I would love for M to be in bed by 7.30/8, just for adult time. To have a break! Also so I can get some uni work done, seeing as her day sleeps are so unpredictable. I think you are all right about having a more set routine. We will start tomorrow night. Tonight wasnt too bad, after she calmed down from crying so much...
-
hey everyone,
having trouble keeping up.. the kids have been crazy and ive got my friend from melbourne and her son staying here as well..
ive been in contact with the aba through email councelling and they gave me the number for my local group leader.. i called her yesterday and she is going to try and get someone to come and see my here since id have to get public transport with the 2 kids to get to their meeting.. shes going to call back today.. feeling very up and down with it all.. dh isnt very supportive really he thinks we should just stick with formula.. he dosnt understand at all.. sometimes i think maybe hes right tho i mean what if i put in all this time and effort and the same thing happens again? i dont think i will handle that well.. ughhh why couldnt things just go well from the start? im so over everything and everyone atm im a total mess!!
-
Well Noni if the same thing happens again, at least you know you gave it 110% effort in trying to make it work. I really think you should give it another crack - I would have loved to be in your position where I at least had a chance of making it work. Tell Mick that you respect that he feels the way he does, but YOU just need unconditional support from him while you try to make this work.
Oz, having had one summer baby (Lindsay in Feb) it swore me off ever having another one LOL. Our nectarine tree has just started blossoming and I'm really excited - I love stone fruits and they are so good straight off the tree.
H, when Lindsay was this age, his bedtime was 8.30 and we gradually got it down to 7.30 by the time he'd stopped having day sleeps etc. It's so good to have them in bed that early just so you have more time to get stuff done unhindered before you can sit and relax for the night.
 G! I bet the exam markers got a giggle out of that one.
Had a big chat last night to a friend of mine about the whole uni thing and she reckons I would be abel to do it too - she's a teacher herself. DH also reckons I could start next year and go part time till A is at school and then go fulltime - but not sure if you can do it that way or not? So he's supportive of me wanting to do it which is great, just the timing might be too soon for me if I do it next year LOL.
-
sherie - you def should be able to do it that way - part time for a few years and then full time. you will knock a bit of time off it that way and also it'll be a nice way to ease into it... i guess it differs from course to course and with unis but you may be able to do 1 or 2 subjects a sememster or something for the forst couple of yrs. its great that DH is supportive (I should think so!!) - when would you have to apply etc? you will be a fabulous teacher... we need more like you!
Noni - hugs to you... glad the ABA can help you, how fantastic they can send someone to your house. they are a great organisation. I agree with Sherie just tell DH you really need his support as however this turns out you will have some ups and downs and the 2 of you need to be in it together. give it a shot, that's all you can do at this point sweetie.
MM - i think try to move M backa bit in her sleep. it will begood for you to get that time back. i dont know how your kids stay up so late, N is knackered by bed time! though eh has such fullon days maybe that is it.
all going well here... we are all sick though. N was coughing teribly all night, i hope he is ok at creche today... Jakey still has a cold (has had it all his life poor little guy) and so do DH and I. I cant wait for winter to be over! N's current obsession is with the washing machine, he loads it up each morning and watches and looks for his clothes in there!
-
Trill- You should definitely give it a go. You should have no probs doing part time and then swapping over to full time. How's A?
Noni- If you really want to BF you can do it. But if it is going to cause too much emotional anxiety for you then you need to weigh up if that's what you really want. To be totally honesty, BF'ing is hard to begin with. Sometimes when bubs has a growth spurt there can be days when you have the baby on your boob for 24hrs straight. But then things settle down again. If you want to BF you need to trust your body and trust that you will make enough milk for your baby. As long as those nappies are wet the weight gain isn't so much a factor. Obviously within limits, but sometimes both my girls have had tiny weight gains one week, only to have a great one the next week. It can be hard, but in my opinion it then becomes so much easier, but for me it took about 6-8 weeks before we had the feeding thing cruising along. Now it is so easy and worth all the hard yards we had to put in. You can do this if you want, but you have to really want to. I hope the ABA counsellor is able to give you some good advice today. xxx
G- Yes, yes you are, lmao @ the banana.
Arte- What a ****ty situation to be in. to be totally honest i feel like i could give birth on my own but obviously would prefer DH to be there. Mainly so he can share the experience and feel the elation of the birth too. I don't think i need him there, but what a wonderful thing for a couple to share. So i guess what i'm saying is, you'll do amazingly well on your own, but i feel for you not being able to share that special moment.
MM- i think sticking to the bedtime routine really works well here. Sometimes Lu has 45 min day sleep at 3pm sometimes 2 hours at 11am or 3pm, but we still go to bed at 7pm. Seems to work ok!?
OZ- heat + pregnancy sux! i enjoyed my winter pregnancy better i think. Nothing worse than sweaty thighs rubbing together. :p It was very windy last night and it rained like it used to when i was a kid, bucked down. But it wasn't too bad here. I think they talked it up a bit. :dunno:
MD- I couldn't study without my coffee and lollies! i always had a secret stash. Always took them into exams too.
I want to come to meet you girls too. If only it was closer!
Had a playdate with the lovely G yesterday, you should have seen dare devil L, he was climbing up a steep slide backwards by clinging onto to the netting. :o He has no fear, just follows the big boys everywhere. Sas and Jimmy are in love. Too cute! Will try and bluetooth a pic form my phone to FB.....
-
Noni - What a tough decision, but I think if you give it another shot & it still didnt work out, at least you tried your absolute best with it. See what the lactation nurse says when she comes out, hopefully she will get there today. Dont beat yourself up if it doesnt all work out, breastfeeding can be hard work for some of us!
Trill - YAY you should so go for it. You can even do one unit at a time. This is what I do, I only do this because I work two days as it is & I couldnt put M in any more than 3 days of care a week ifykwim. I feel guilty enough as it is!!! If you start off slowly it eases you into uni life, and you have more time to focus on your assignments as you dont have as many to do. & with young kids doing uni FT is definately do able, but hard work, you'd have to be organised. I am really hoping next yr that I can leave work all together & focus more on uni, just depends for us how much rebate we would get back from the govt for childcare & family tax benefit. Go for it, what course are you interested in, primary or kindy? My sis is doing kindy & LOVES it.
PAP - Ahhh no sounds like a nasty bug, poor J as well having had it practically since birth. How are you holding up sleepwise, feedingwise & now with sickness? Thanks for the tips, I will def be trying to bring that bedtime forward to a decent time! As for N, thats great that he is helping out in his own little way with the washing etc. I was actually watching supernanny last night (new fave show) & she was saying how its good to encourage toddlers to help out around the house, it gives them a new responsibility & they feel like a 'big boy' & it helps them to see that they are no longer the baby in the house, J has taken that spot iykwim. Just simple things like helping load the washing, sweeping with their kids brush etc. I thought that was a good point.
Falguni - Sorry, must have posted while I was typing! What did you study? Thats gorgeous about the kids being in love lol
Girls whats this right...a few times now M has come to me pointing to her thumb wanting me to kiss it better, when I grab her thumb it like clicks loudly back into place!? Its like she is dislocating it & asking me to put it right again. How strange.
-
Medical imaging MM. Not that i plan on scanning anyone in the next 4 years! Have thrown the idea of going back to ultrasound around a bit though. Not for a couple of years, but maybe. :) ETA- does it hurt when you click her thumb?
-
Thanx everyone.. Am still trying to bf him at different times through the day but having a lot of trouble attatching him and keeping him there.. Hoping to hear back from the aba councellor today hopefully she can organise someone for me (she wasn't 100% sure) I wish id done it earlier when I still had more milk.. I do still have milk easily available (starts coming as soon as I squeeze) but its slower flowing and I don't seem to be letting down like I was before so that makes him fuss a bit.. Hopefully we can get there tho.. Have cracks on both sides now which is no fun but still have hope have read stories where people have had extreme nipple damage and still managed to get through it and successfully bf its just getting his attatchment sorted out so he's getting enough because not only was he not gaining weight he wasn't weeing or pooing much at all so I've been told by aba as well as the gp he definately wasn't getting enough.. Dh will support me in whatever I chose but he's quite clear in his opinion that we should just bottle feed him which makes it hard.. He won't go against me in any decision I make just hard knowing he dosnt agree with me on something I think is so important...
-
Don't forget what Barb sid - it wasn't that YOU didn't have enough milk, but that HE wasn't able to get enough and that can often be due to a poor attachment. You should start drinking loads of water again as well because it's surprising how much something as simple as drinking enough water can have as well.
-
Noni, I hope the aba lady can help you out a bit. I know you always regretted it with A and it would be great if you could get W back to it. But also remember that if it doesn't work out he will still be a happy healthy boy and that you tried your best.
Ange, I am not that worried about labouring by myself, last time I barely noticed DH there anyway - it just makes me so upset to think of him missing the actual birth, not being the first to see bub and finding out the gender etc. I should have done medical imaging, I didn't think about it until the end of first year uni though and because it is a set course I wouldn't have been able to cross credit and there was no way I wanted to stay another year lol
Oz, at least the ladies pregnant over summer don't have to be lugging firewood all over the place. Most days I have to bring in a wheelbarrow load of firewood, it isn't that easy carrying it with my big fat guts in the way.
-
Wow Arte- that seems a bit rough. I know you wouldn't leave his brother out on the street, but is there anywhere else he can go????
I started studying a double degree Arts/Science, but didn't want to be a scientist (and naively thought that was the only path i was headed down. ;) ) so applied and started over!
-
Ange, all the rest of DH's family are in the south island, we are the only ones close.
I liked my science course, but if I had thought about it more I would have realised the actual jobs at the end of it are b-o-r-i-n-g. If I had my time again I would look for jobs that sounded interesting and train towards something specific no matter if the course itself was boring. I may yet retrain once the children are at school, actually I think I would be o.k once this new baby is at kindy to do a couple of units extramurally (MD, I used that just for you lol - what do you call distance papers over there?)
-
Distance education, correspondence???
Thats' funny you say that because i thought that my options were too broad with science/arts so wanted to do a degree where i had a job at the end. But now i feel so locked into that job and unless i do more study or lecture then i don't have many options to use my degree iykwim. Although i did Nuclear Medicine which is pretty highly specialised and only major hospitals have nuc med departments. If i didn't marry a farmer then this wouldn't be an issue. But the likelihood of us living near a major city is pretty slim! I should have done radiology then i would have a lot more options including shift work. But tbh i didn't enjoy the work that much and think i would much prefer ultrasound if i chose to go down that path. i think i would like working in PET but the radiation dose to the staff is pretty massive and i'd rather keep mine to a minimum!
What a pita about your bil, i mean you can't turn away someone in need, but less than ideal. And as for you family, i think you should just come back to the main island. ;)
-
Had I done medical imaging I would have gone for ultrasound, but that added yet another year on lol.
Actually my families lack of effort is a bit liberating because we were going to move closer to them in a couple of years to access better schools but since it is up to us to visit anyway then we can move anywhere in the country where we can find a good job/school/land combo and just visit for holidays without losing time with them.
Anyhows, I shouldn't complain about my situation, it isn't perfect but at least I have a house to live in... I think at this stage of your pregnancy with S you were homeless!
W totally rocks at music now! I can't believe how confident he is getting, he runs all around the room doing the actions with the other mums and yelling out bits of the words! He loves it and gives himself a big round of applause at the end of each song. I don't know what happened, he went from hating it and having a solid half hour tantrum each time to raving about it all week. I have even caught him practicing the actions for wheels on the bus!
-
Lu loves to sing too. She loves songs with actions, very cute!
