Re: Babies Born ~ December 2014
Lip tie can affect breastfeeding, I'm sure it is why we have struggled with bubby's latch from the start. It also affects speech development, teeth alignment & hygiene. Have a look at some of the articles and testimonials on Dr Kotlow's site: Pediatric Dentist in Albany, NY - Dr. Lawrence A. Kotlow
You must be feeling really disappointed with having to return to work much sooner than planned. Do you mind me asking what you do? You have mentioned working with babies and mothers a couple of times.

Re: Babies Born ~ December 2014
It's a back wisdom tooth, I'm not sure why it cracked. Probably insufficient brushing back there. I'm sure the dentist will lecture me about the cause. It isn't deathly hurting yet thankfully as I am yet to express a drop. DS is really tiring me. No day sleeps off me and very unsettled nights. I can get him to fall asleep but he wakes within minutes of putting him down. Grunting and leg pulling. I hear abs feel his stomach gurgling. Of a night he spends a large portion of it grunting and straining like he's trying to pass wind. Also gets congested. I'm feeling so awful as my DD doesn't get much of my time, DS takes it all. Had a good cry about that earlier.
I'm so glad you found the tongue tie turtledove. It's a shame it wasn't picked up sooner. That's interesting regarding the intolerances.
-
Re: Babies Born ~ December 2014
Mildez yay for the health kick and reaching goals. I have no idea how much I weighed at time of delivery but I think I gained around 25kilos.
That's so stressful financial worries when on leave. I really feel for you!

Babies Born ~ December 2014
Ps. Anyone Clucky for pregnancy again? I totally am. I think there's something wrong with me. Maybe because sadly there won't be another babe ever again for our family.
-
Re: Babies Born ~ December 2014
I am!! I thought I was crazy too. Not the tiredness & morning sickness. I just really miss feeling him wiggle inside me.
Really not ready to handle two babies tho!
How many children do you have, Rosie?
Bubby boy had his tongue tie reversed today. He's asleep now, but not looking forward to tonight when the anaesthetic wears off. Glad it is done though.
-
Re: Babies Born ~ December 2014
Ha ha turtledove I'm glad it's not just me. Morning sickness with a toddler is hard enough I would hate to have it with a young bub. We have two children, I would be happy to have one more in a few years. However my husband definitely doesn't want another, for several reasons. He will be getting a vasectomy in a few months. I have warned him that I will probably be very upset in a few years time that he's removed the option to have another, there is no changing his mind. How many children would you like?
I hope that he doesn't wake in pain! Poor darling but it's the best for him.
-
Re: Babies Born ~ December 2014
Turtledove now I am really confused. The literature I have been reading and what we have been discussing on facebook with other mums with bubs born Dec/Jan was in favour of not touching the upper lip unless it poses a dental risk. Obviously the tongue is an entirely different matter. How did your night go last night?
Rosey your not alone in feeling clucky. I think for me its the thought of never doing it again. I'm not a pregnancy fan but do love the wiggling baby inside. And I absolutely love having a baby. I myself would choose not to have anymore because of finances and the whole ttc thing but if DH wanted more I would need no convincing. My DH is also having a vasectomy. Is there anyway you can talk your husband out of it for now? It should be a joint decision and if your not happy about it I personal think he should wait. Not to say he will ever change his mind on more children but to make something so final if your not on the same page yet is a bit selfish. I did see a good friend go through the same thing. She was actually on her hands a knees begging him not to have it done when he was on his way to the procedure. She suffered severe depression afterwards for several years before he had it reversed and she recently had her 4th baby.
-
Babies Born ~ December 2014
Your right Mildez it should be a joint decision. I am thinking with my heart though. Logically we should stop at two - two is hard enough work, financially draining, relationship stress, future plans impacted... etc. humph, I dunno.
I do know I am bloody exhausted. Our boy has no day naps off me, despite me trying for hours each day. Won't lay down in his bassinette until 10ish at night and only for several short stints. Then in bed with me to spend the remainer of the evening grunting. I feel like I'm doing something really wrong :( . He isn't often happy after a feed but seems to feed well. I hear and feel his stomach gurgling, which I don't remember my daughter having. Something is really bothering him - reflux, intolerance... I don't know. Have a pead referral for a few weeks time.

Re: Babies Born ~ December 2014
Mildez - parenting in general is confusing :( so much conflicting advice. This article explains why many say it doesn't need revising: The Difference Between a Lip Tie and a Normal Labial Frenulum ? DrGhaheri.com
Dr Ghaheri advises that it should only be released if it is causing breastfeeding problems or other symptoms.
Another good article from mommypotamus: A Step-By-Step Guide To Diagnosing Tongue/Lip Ties - MommypotamusMommypotamus |
I'm glad we had it done. Our little boy is feeding much better, his latch is wonderful - no more "straw sucking" or sliding off. The blisters on his lip are healing up.
The first night he was a bit grisly. Friday he was very clingy, and would only drink a small amount before crying. We seem to be through the worst now, panadol helps.
-
Re: Babies Born ~ December 2014
Rosey - sorry to hear that you and your husband aren't yet on the same page regarding possible future children. Hopefully you can reach an agreement before any permanent decisions are made.
I'm not sure how many children I want. Having a baby has given me a whole new respect for big families! I know I want another one, but not really ready to think about when yet... That would mean my little boy is no longer a baby! Hubby always wanted a big family close in age, but he realises how much work it is now, and is amazed that some people have more than one :) plus the emotional & physical toll for me, and the financial side. We'll see. Right now I want to make sure I'm enjoying this little guy best I can. Does it get easier as you go along?
How is your tooth Rosey?
-
Babies Born ~ December 2014
It does get easier turtledove. As the months tick by it does. My DD was unsettled and never slept, she was going to be an only child. Then as we began to get a bit more sleep and things got easier we thought we'd have one more he he.
-
Re: Babies Born ~ December 2014
Ladies can I ask how your babes are going with sleeping, day and night?
-
Re: Babies Born ~ December 2014
Turtledove forgot to say when you asked earlier that I currently work as a child and family health nurse. I did general nursing for a while before doing 8years in midwifery before doing CFHN. I have only been qualified as a CFHN for a year now. Still did 1-2days a week in midwifery just to keep my hand in. I am now on leave until November hopefully.
Rosey its hard to say how long DS sleeps as every day is different. Overnight he feeds 3-4times at least. We are almost 100% co sleeping now as I just couldn't settle him in his cot. I do have a monitor on him as I worry about SIDS. During the day his happy if I have him on me. Otherwise I am lucky to get 2 hrs from him. His got a bit of reflux. Not medicated I just hope it doesn't get much worse as they say the 4month mark is usually when the severity peaks.
-
Re: Babies Born ~ December 2014
Mildez with your DS's reflux does he spit up or do you recognize other symptoms? I'm thinking DS is suffering from reflux. Did you end up getting yourself a wrap or carrier? Hope so otherwise you must be knackered. DS has been living in the ergo or the HAB.
Gosh I love this boy. Feeling so emotional he is already 6 weeks!
-
Re: Babies Born ~ December 2014
Hhhmm seems hubby really better not get the snip. Here I am crying because of a pregnancy announcement knowing I won't have another.
-
Re: Babies Born ~ December 2014
Mildez - well done on doing further study, even after having children. I'm sure it has its moments, but it must be lovely working with babies. I was asking because I was wondering if if was something that you could do from home, to prevent needing child care, but it would probably mean a change in direction. Many nurses do night shift when they have young families, but I don't know how they function!
Rosey - every day is different. But he does usually sleep 3-4 hours at night, in his bassinet, gets up for a feed and straight back to sleep. During the day he fights sleep more, but usually has 3 or 4 naps, with longer awake times in between. He has been a good sleeper ever since we were in the special care nursery. It is the feeding that is our challenge!
-
Re: Babies Born ~ December 2014
Forgot to say, that's on a good day. Other days he can be awake every 1.5-2 hours from 3am onwards, by the time I feed him, get him settled, pump etc, I only get about 30 mins sleep in between. Usually on a day that we have to go out, so I can't catch up with a nap. Some days he wants to play at 4am. Other times he is so restless I put him in his electric swing, and sleep on the couch. Still other days, he just wants to be held, cuddled, bounced & rocked, and I am so sleepy and my arms are falling off... Not that I can complain tho!
Rosey, maybe there is one more persistent soul just waiting its time :) is it possible to postpone the decision for a while? In my family, it was Mum who had the op. She had it reversed a few years later, and had more children. Not sure if it can be reversed for guys tho?

Re: Babies Born ~ December 2014
My baby wanted to comfort nurse to sleep tonight. First time ever. Makes me feel like a real breastfeeding mama :)

Re: Babies Born ~ December 2014
Yay turtledove. That's beautiful.

Rosey DS does have little spits but that part isn't to bad although its definitely getting worse. What upsets him the most and its hard to explain but its like he gets a pain and holds his breath. He only does it when feeding or just afterwards. He also doesn't seem to get comfort from feeding anymore its more to satisfy his hunger but unless my boobs are quiet soft and the milk flow is poor he doesn't seem to enjoy been on there. He wants to but fusses a lot like there is something holding him back. I would only class it as quiet mild at the moment certainly not needing medicating.
In other news DS was immunised a few days ago. He had a little temp 12hours afterwards but now seems back to normal. As for sleeping in his own bed that's not happening. He was also weighed for the first time in a month and is 5180grams and 58cm long. I expected him to be longer as he was 54cm at birth.
TD that's wonderful that your DS was enjoying a comfort suck.
-
Babies Born ~ December 2014
Your DS sounds similar to mine Mildez except instead of holding breath he does a little shriek kind of noise like he can't catch his breath. He also gets very congested when we lay him down. Such a guessing game. I hope your DS improves! I hear you on the no bed sleeping too, it's hard! I can get him down and sometimes he even self settles but awake screaming within 5 mins.
Ladies does anyone have any aches and pains? I am almost 7wks pp and I have just started to get lower abdominal aches. I am also still bleeding, small smear/spots like a dark grape colour. I don't know if it's because I've been over doing things or there's something else going on, maybe some retained product. Though my placenta was whole and intact.
-
Re: Babies Born ~ December 2014
Rosey my DS does that shriek thing too. It must frighten him as afterwards and when his holding his breath he flaps his arms/legs around in a panick like he can't breath. That's when its like his holding his breath. And when he breaths again he screams afterwards. Its horrible to watch. Probably doesn't take as long for him to take a breath then it seems. How is the aches and loss going? Has it gone now? I basically stopped bleeding at 3weeks PP except the odd pink smear. It was super heavy until I lost a piece of retain product at 2.5weeks. So nice not to need to wear pads. Hopefully AF stays away for a long time. Although I would like my libido to return soon and I know it wont until my cycle returns.
My bubba boy was weighed and immunised earlier this week. His up over 2kgs on his discharge weight. Now weighs 5.18kgs. His also just grown out of the 0000 clothing. So sad to give them away, throw them out but we won't be needing them again. I am also just recovering from my 2nd bout of mastitis. I had it recurrent with no2 but managed to keep it away with no3 but now nothing I do prevents it worsening so I am back on ab's again. I've also returned to studying which is a big downer. I wish I could spend my next 6months enjoying DS and not getting in a flab over assessments and the likes.
How is everyone else going?
-
Re: Babies Born ~ December 2014
Im here, ive been so slack sorry girls. Ive offically got my period too....****ers... i had my papsmear at 6 weeks, and had a week of bleeding afterwards, i thought it was a bit much to be caused by the papsmear, and what do you know, exactly amonth later im bleeding again. Same thing happened with Spock. Stupid uterus. Grrr
Quark is good, she does that screaming no breathing thing too =( not fun. If you gently blow on the face bub will breathe. Its hard watch tho, and not know why they are upset.
-
Re: Babies Born ~ December 2014
Boo to AF returning so soon. My AF returned at 6weeks with no1 but no 2 and 3 it was 6months. I hope it doesn't return for ages seeing as I wont be ttc again. I wanted it back asap after my last so I could track my cycle and ttc again and it kept me waiting. Just my luck it will return quickly this time now I don't need it.
Is anyone elses baby having any skin problems? DS is looking like his got eczema behind his ears and his getting cradle cap. Nothing I am using is helping.
-
Re: Babies Born ~ December 2014
My DS has cradle cap in his eyebrows and top of his head. Going to use a bit of castor oil for his hair, obviously not touching his eyebrows. He also has very smelly hands as he has then squeezed to tightly all the time, I wash them several times a day
-
Re: Babies Born ~ December 2014
We have the cradle cap on eyebrows and a bit behind ears. I don't do anything special for it more that a wash in the bath. We are struggling with the manky neck rolls, had same problem with Spock, I just can't keep them clean and dry. They stink and her skin is now macerated too =(
-
Re: Babies Born ~ December 2014
Cradle cap here, too. He got it at 3 weeks in his eyebrows, now has it over his head. I use coconut oil because it is also anti-fungal. Leave it on for half hour or so, then gently rub a towel over it. The oil helps loosen the flakes.
Still no AF for me :)
-
Re: Babies Born ~ December 2014
DH said one of the guys at his work is doing cry it out. They let their month old scream from 12:30-2:30am before the dad (who never helps overnight) went to tend to her.
I didn't know people still did that. I thought everyone read belly belly!
-
Re: Babies Born ~ December 2014
That's horrible. I felt bad today for letting DS cry whilst I finished the vacuuming. It was under 2minutes as I am expecting visitors and in that time he stopped and had put himself to sleep. His still asleep now an hour later lying on the floor on the lounge room on a pillow (a bit of a SIDS no no) but I am watching him constantly. I am wondering if I attend to him to quickly as he never settles himself normally. His getting a bit better. I am sometimes able to rub his head to get him to sleep. Usually he needs a nipple in his mouth. If his not hungry or in his witch hour DH was able to take him for a walk in the pram in his witchy period. As soon as he stopped the pram he howled :)
-
Re: Babies Born ~ December 2014
Oh yea that's awful :( . Poor baby!
I can get DS to self settle. Do feed, play, sleep - wrap while happy, into bassinet, dummy and ocean sounds. Off he goes. The problem is staying asleep. He wakes minutes later screaming, he's the same in his rocker. I can spend hours doing the resettle and back down, but still only five mins. I truly feel it's reflux. Poor darling. After a certain amount of tries he goes straight into the ergo where he sleeps happily.
-
Re: Babies Born ~ December 2014
They are trying to teach her that night = no stimulation. Getting a need met isn't stimulation!
Bubby will usually feed at about midnight, then again at 4ish, but goes straight back to sleep. During the day he is much harder to settle, he really fights sleep, and won't feed to sleep. I have to swaddle and rock him, which can take ages, but left on his own he just grizzles & cries when he's tired. Put him in the Manduca and he's straight to sleep. Until I stop bouncing or walking. He won't put himself to sleep in the swing anymore.
-
Re: Babies Born ~ December 2014
My DS is still asleep on the pillow. His startled a few times as his not wrapped but has not woken up. DD3 is asleep too. This is rare :) If they are still asleep in an hour I have to wake them to get DD2 from the bus. DD1's bus arrived 40mins after. Naps usually interfere with bus runs.
I don't stimulate DS at night either although he doesn't scream. He will start sooking or warning me if I don't get him the screaming will soon start. Everything is done in the dark. He feeds 3-4times usually but goes back to sleep. He wakes as soon as the sun is up. His so adorable with his big eyes looking around and his so smiley. DH gets up early for work and will often take him out for a chat and time with him. Its his happy time too which is nice and I try and get a bit more sleep. DH doesn't help at all overnight. Not that I ask him. He would if I asked but as he cant feed him I think no point us both being awake.
-
Re: Babies Born ~ December 2014
See Mildez, you are tending to him before he screams. Entirely different to letting him cry himself to sleep in the name of "no stimulation"!
How long did he sleep on the pillow for? We only have one car, so getting to any appointments means taking DH to work and picking him up. Often means three trips in and out on one day. Always messes with naps. For that reason I'm weighing up whether mothers group is worthwhile. Did you ladies find it helpful?
DH is more of a night owl than I, so he will often take DS from 9-12 so that I can get some sleep. After that I'm on my own, which is totally fine as DH is the one that needs to get up and go to work the next day.
-
Re: Babies Born ~ December 2014
Hi ladies, how are you all?
How are your babies going? Lots of saliva and bubbles here, has noticed his toes and is mesmerized, arm control is pretty good - gets hands to mouth, will grab my hand if held infront of his face, lots of cheeky smiles and cooing, trying to pull forward when resting back against legs etc. Sleep isn't really improving, hates the car. This kid is seriously adorable! I can't get enough of him, could eat him all up!
I'd love an update on your Bubs if you want to share :)
-
Re: Babies Born ~ December 2014
Wow Rosie, your bub is doing well! My little guy has only just started hand in his mouth, playing with his feet and bubbles, and he is 12 weeks. Still not grabbing objects. Loves his play gym, will happily lie under there for an hour, but prefers to kick rather than touch.
This past week he has decided he is a big boy and doesn't need sleep anymore! Last night would not go down until 1am. Just wanted to smile and coo at me. So he's a bit clingy today. Hopefully this non sleeping is just a phase!
He is so gorgeous. I wish he could stay this age forever. I get teary thinking that soon he's going to be running around, and won't be content to lie in my arms staring and cooing at mummy!
-
Re: Babies Born ~ December 2014
I have another cheeky one, 12wks yesterday, hands to mouth and starting to reach for objects, will grasp them if I put them in her hand and she goos like mad. Even tho she is sleeping less than last week, she is still a better sleeper than Spock, so I
M enjoying it =)
-
Re: Babies Born ~ December 2014
Turtledove - wow happy to lay for an hour. I'm super impressed! My little mate doesn't play with his feet he just looks at them and practices moving them :), which has only been the last two days. His movements are still very jerky. He is in his 8th week. Bugger about the sleep! 1am bed time is a killer, at least he wasn't crying I suppose :/ . Are you familiar with 'The Wonder Weeks', they have done long term research into babies fussy periods finding predictable leaps that all babies take. There's one around 12 weeks, so hopefully that explains his lack of sleep. You can get a Wonder a Weeks app which is handy. I too get teary, babyhood slips through your fingers so rapidly. It really will be over all too soon. Que tears. He will still love laying in your arms though :)
TT40 glad you got a better sleeper this time and double yay for enjoying it.
-
Re: Babies Born ~ December 2014
Glad I'm not the only one Rosey! Most days I'm in denial that he'll ever get older than 3 months. DH can't wait for him to start crawling, but I honestly love him as a little baby.
Yes, 12 weeks is a wonder week. Seems like his patterns change every week tho, wonder week or not! He's been a good sleeper ever since the SCN, so I can't complain. DH stayed up with him last night as I wasn't feeling too good.
TT40, is your bub holding her head up yet?
-
Re: Babies Born ~ December 2014
TD, quark could hold her head up from a week, but yes now she is using her back and holding herself upright. We put her in the bouncer and she tries to sit herself up, most happy when sitting up on our laps
-
Re: Babies Born ~ December 2014
My baby still has a major wobble neck. Every week his improving but. His not doing near as much as it sounds like your bubs are. He has no control over his hands just still tends to flap them around or gouge at his face still. He still has the jerky arm and leg movements. Tummy time is improving. He at least can lift his head up now. A few weeks ago he couldn't do it. His tone is actually pretty poor and despite been born at 39+3 he did has some prem features. Funny as he was 3 weeks more cooked then my 2nd DD but didn't seem as mature as she did. He is having a go at chatting. Its so cute and the cutest noises come out of him. He talks to my boobs a lot. He feeds 3-4 times overnight but I find him so easy overnight. Just feeds for 10mins then he goes straight back to sleep usually.
