Babies Born ~ July 1st-15th 2009 #2

Well hayley seems to be fine after her needles yesterday. She kept spitting out the rotarix one (the oral one) so I don't think she got much of that one. But she hasn't been grumpy (she is in a much better mood today than she was yesterday!) and doesn't seem to have a temperature. If she was going to have a reaction I would have noticed it by now wouldn't I? It was about this time yesterday she got them done.

Went out shopping today, got a heap of photos printed at Big W to stick in some calendars for family presents. Not happy with some of the photos but I think it was too dark/too close up when I took the photo rather than the printing. Anyway they are done now so they'll just have to do! Hayley was good, very chatty in her pram, a couple of old ladies walked past and commented how chatty she was! Lol so cute! Went into work quickly and said hello to a few people up there, she was great, showing off great big smiles and even a giggle! Until she gave herself the hiccups and started getting cranky so we got out of there then! Back home now and resting in the air con...it is so hot outside.
Better go she is due for a feed shortly so better let her have a wriggle on the floor. Sorry for no personals once again..time seems to fly lately!

SS Storm - I know what you mean about getting out of the heat!!

Took the bassinette out of the stroller today and gave Sam his first walk in the pram as a big boy! I think he really liked it!! I think he is starting to prefer sitting up to lying down. Anyway, it was really great, except I realised how much more sun he gets over his arms and legs in the stroller compared to when he was in the basinette!! He is a big boy now!! Sorry just had to share the moment!

Tinsel - Isaac is usually cranky like that when he's over tired. I know what you mean about going out too, it's so hard to get out when you had so much trouble getting them to sleep, I'm always appologising for waking him up getting him out of the car or out of the pram. Makes me feel so mean.

I think I'm just going to go with giving him the dummy for daytime sleeps. He doesn't need it at night time at the moment so I think since he's happy I'll just keep going the way we have been. As you say, Whatever works, and this seems to be working.

jetta - re: the dry skin, Isaac had a few dry spots in his skin folds and his nappyline when he was little, I just used olive oil after every bath and within a week it was gone. I used it on his face too and he was fine with it. Just watch the eyes it stings like hell.
I'm totally in awe of how quickly he is learning. I think he's going to try rolling soon too, not sure why, just a feeling I get sometimes tells me he's trying.
How do you manage to get to the gym? Do they let you take Sam in? We are with Jetts 24hr gym and because of insurance they wont let us take Isaac in :( It makes it really hard. One of us has to stay outside with Isaac while the other goes in and that means that theres no-one to spot for either of us. Just have to hope DP doesn't drop a weight on himself one day :S
Isaac loves being in the stroller rather than the bassinette. We changed it over at the same time as we moved him to the cot because he was sleeping in the bassinette on the pram for the first 2 months. He was getting pretty cramped in the bassinette so I changed it to the seat and he was really happy. He loved being able to look around I think. I just put a light wrap over his legs, it seems to keep the sun off. Also I found a sunscreen that is apparently safe to use on under 6mth olds - I asked at the chemist. I think it was "hamilton sensitive".

lovelycate - Zac might be having a growth spurt or developmental milestone coming up or just happened? Apparently babies can have sleep disturbances and feed more often around the same time. It must be hard for you

I am getting really sick of people staring at Isaac. I feel like turning around to them and saying "how would like it if I came up and stared at you in the middle of the shops?!" I probably wouldn't mind so much if they asked or were a bit more polite about it. It's more the people that just walk up and stand there staring or touch him, especially when I'm feeding him. WTH? Can't you see me with my tit out?

AFM - not too much happening really just feeling very lucky to have my lovely little boy. He really is a little miracle. SIL's friend lost her little one last week and it's made me realise how lucky we really are to have our healthy little boy.
I'm getting really sick of living with the people I live with too - MIL, FIL DP's uncle and DP's cousin - It's a big house so it's not so much space that's an issue. More the lack of respect I get as a parent. MIL has no problem just walking over and grabbing Isaac off whoever is holding him, including me or DP. Or if he's playing happily in the bouncer on his own, and makes a little noise, she'll jump and say do you wnat me to pick him up, and I'll say no he's fine, and 2 seconds later she's doing it anyway. twice in two days this has happened. :angry:
and DP's cousin.. omg dont get me started. last week isaac was "It" or "that thing" and apparently all he does is scream. Which is bs.

Hi Everyone,

Hugs to all the bubs getting immunisations. Eva and Sara are going next Thursday for their 4 month and 4 year needles. I am a bit nervous about Sara because she fully aware of what is going to happen.

I been really busy with preparing for a combined birthday party that we are holding for Sara and Loren on Sunday.

Miss Eva is going well. She seems to be sleeping a bit better at night. Some nights she wakes once for a feed and others twice. Her day sleeps are all over the shop but I have noticed that some days she'll have 3 small sleeps and others 1 long sleep (around 3 hours). She isn't rolling yet but she is holding things and putting them in her mouth. She has just hit the 6kg mark, which makes her my lightest baby at this stage. I was a bit concerned but she is happy and bright and averages a gain of 100g per week, although I think her gains have been less in the last 2 weeks.

Tinsel - Eva is getting really cranky when biting down on things too lol. I think some teeth maybe on the way. Funny you mentioned the introducing solids at 4 months, because my friend who has a bub asked me if I had started Eva yet. Apparently the new protocol is to start at 4 months now according to her doctor and they say not to worry about holding off on introducing things like wheat and grains. I must get down to my nurse and ask her what she thinks.

Heva - the calendars were $10 each from Big W, there are a few different designs but I chose all the same design (I bought 8..the guy must have been wondering what I was up to! Lol) as I didnt think the others really suited baby photos. Got the photos printed yesterday and it was a bit over $20 for 145 photos, I need to go back and get some more, I have quite a few leftover (going to put them on front covers for the calendars though), but for December I want to use a pic of Hayley with a santa hat (got a little kids one from Big W), I'm using the same photo for my christmas cards but didn't get enough printed..my counting was a bit out! Lol.
Sorry about your SIL's friend's baby...that's so sad. I know what you mean about feeling lucky- df's cousin's baby boy was stillborn a couple of months before Hayley was born, i was so scared that after going through 9 months of pregnancy something terrible was going to happen.
Hope your 'housemates' stop being so annoying too, must be hard living with the PIL :hug:

Bek- our day sleeps aren't much better! Lol. She usually has about 4 short sleeps (1/2 hour to an hour each, an hour if I'm lucky!), or sometimes 2 or 3 short sleeps with a long 2-3 hour sleep. She just gets so grumpy if she only has 1/2 hour sleeps during the day.

Just thought I would pop in quickly and say hello and wish everyone a good weekend.

Jetta I also changed Ash over to the seat on the pram a couple of weeks back. He loves it! I keep him reclined most of the time, unless we are at a cafe or something, then I sit him up.

Storm sounds like your naps are about the same as ours. It's so frustrating when they wake up after half an hour and are still tired...

Bekz it's interesting what they say with solids isn't it... My mchn has said to wait until 5 or 6 months which I think we are going to do. I don't think Ash is ready yet, he watches me eat like a hawk but still has the tongue thrust reflex. I introduced him to water about a week ago with a sippy cup. He enjoys experimenting with it, but at the moment is mostly just playing with it and enjoying the sensation of something in his mouth, mind you most of it seems to spill out.

Heva I feel for you living with the inlaws, it must be so frustrating have MIL intervene like that all the time. I admire you, there is no way I could put up with my IL's, especially FIL. They live in the US but are coming to visit in January and TBH I am dreading it. It was bad enough before Ash was born, I shudder to think how much more they will irritate me now that they will be all over him and telling me how to do things. I get that they were parents themselves, but for gods sake that was 30 years ago now. We're doing it now, so I think we might be a little bit more in the swing of things iykwim. See how worked up they get me, just thinking about them coming has set me off on a rant LOL!

Cate Ash wakes up screaming sometimes too... I wonder if they are nightmares, but then I think what could he be having nightmares about... maybe immunisations...

Blake's managed to get a chest infection:( so went to dr with dad (& not mum) yesterday and has some antibiotics (and another appt on Mon with me) to try to clear it up. nasty cough. he's been kind enough to share with me & DH and my voice is nearly gone (stayed home with DS today - I missed school and he missed CC). about to go feed again ... heat (39 today) and sickness not helping although he's had 1 1/2 hr sleep so far. On positive note skin's nearly cleared up.

ss-storm - I had a look at the calendars, the ones where you give them the photo's and they print them for you. I'm thinking I might do that for my mum, cause she always has a calendar, and maybe do photo books or something similar for others.
I sent SIL an email with a direct link to the BB loss section, I'm still in 2 minds as to whether or not it was the right thing to do, :redface: I guess they can decide themselves if they want to join.

MissE - dw I totally understand getting worked up. I feel like everyday I'm whinging about something they've done. I feel like telling them to shut up and let me be a parent, instead of telling me what to do and doing it for me if I don't like it. But I can't cause it's thier house and we cant afford to be booted out. I just wish they'd be a little more respectful... ahem.. /end rant... again.

Cate - Isaac wakes up crying occasionally (twice today :() and often sobs in his sleep, it's heartbreaking isn't it? :hug: It could be nightmares, I'm convinced Isaac was having nightmares of his birth for a few months. These days though he sounds like he's in pain, so I don't know. Any ideas?

AFM - Went to the shops today and got my legs and eyebrows waxed, I feel much more human now, less like a warewolf. WooHoo!
We've had some overheating problems with the car for the last month. finally the mechanic figured out what the prolem was and fixed it, we get the car back and the WHOLE CAR is speckled with grey underspray and theres a hole in the mesh on the BRAND NEW front bar :angry: the mech's explaination - "oh yea I was supposed to get that off" (paint) and "something flew into it while I was driving"(mesh). WTH? a) there shouldn't be underspray on the car in the first place! and B) the mesh is pretty solid I dont think even a rock could do that coming off a truck tyre and its in a strange place for that anyway.
So we go and get them to get the underspray off and they have to buff it and that's left scratch marks all over the paint and they also scratched the windows getting it off. So now the paint job is ruined! DF is ringing fair trade on monday to see if we can get the $7000 to get a respray (custom paint job) and however much the mesh is to replace.
beacause of this DF has been in a foul mood all afternoon.
Sigh, all I seem to do these days is whinge. Sorry.

storm - love the calendar idea! I and SIL are planning to make Christmas cards this year using our bubs as the 'cover boys'. Target has some cute little santa outfits so we'll take some photos and make our own cards!

Jetta - I upgraded Zac to the 'big boy' seat recently. he seems to love it too, although I miss seeing his face now that he's not in the bassinette :-(

Bekz - the 'rule' with introducing solids seems to be all over the place. Our MCHN has said "at six months, not before four months". I think Zac is definitely ready, it's just finding a time and day to actually do it now! I am looking forward to it...

leckert - you poor things! being sick in this heat would be pretty miserable too. Hope it all clears up quickly.

Heva - we're here for you to get things off your chest when you need to! Can't imagine what it must be like for you living with the in-laws :o I shaved my legs for the first time in months recently - I had no idea that my legs were that hairy!!

AFM - Zac is still having problems with settling. I've gotten into the habit of rocking him to sleep and then putting him down, but unfortunately he's started to not like that so much... he can obviously feel the weight shifting as I lean over to put him down and he starts grizzling. If I do get him down alright he wakes up within a couple of minutes, absolutely bug-eyed and shrieking. I've tried standing next to the cot with my hands on him, and it still happens. Poor little mite looks so terrified! The weird thing is that it only seems to happen with his day sleeps (touch wood). His night sleeps have regressed (waking every 3 hours again, bummer), but he seems to sleep ok otherwise at night. I can only assume it's just something he will work through as he is still the most delightful, happy little fellow the rest of the time.

Doesn't your heart just melt to look at them when they're smiling, or peacefully asleep, or ... pretty much any time at all?

Arlea also sometimes wakes from her sleeps crying. I was talking about this with my sister in Adelaide, her LO was born on the 9th July & he does the same. Usually they stir, wakes slowly & smiling. But sometimes they can be sleeping soundly & all of a sudden with no warning, wake crying / screaming, very upsetting :( We were talking about it & wondering about nightmares too...:dunno:

Leckert - glad his skin is clearing up - was it dermatitis? J had that at about 6 weks all over his body - poor little guy. i think it would be awful in this heat too. J has excema and i am finding it clears up a bit if i use QV oil in his bath each day plus moo goo excema cream on patches - quite thick and not rubbed in - and moo goo MSN cream as moisturiser all over him. what a regime!!!
J rolled over for the 1st time last night, in his cot - so i was checking all night o make sure he wasnt on his tummy! i am hoping this will make him a bit more settled at night as he has been 'practising' all night the last week! he has had an explosion on the babling front too - adorable! so i think we were going thrugh a leap recently - hope his sleep goes back to 2-3 feeds each night now. he had a slight temp last night, got trhough without panadol but having a homey day today to give him some rest, the gparents were here all weekend and it has been sooo hot so i think he is a bit over it all!

byw is anyone starting solids soon - my paed recommended sometime b/n 4 and 6 months, wont be doing it for a fewwks yet...

mama pan - yay for the rolling! You wont be able to stop him now! Although..H can roll from back to front but can't go front to back, so I have to roll her back over about a 100 times a day! Bit worried about her getting stuck on her tummy in her sleep but she hasn't rolled in her sleep yet, although she has started to sleep on her side, and has also started wriggling around in her cot so she is lying sideways right at the bottom...glad i got her a grobag when i did!

I dont think we'll start solids until after xmas. my MCHN still goes by the 6 month thing, but we are hoping to be moving around christmas so I dont want to be trying to fit in starting solids around that! That's if we are still together...things have been pretty crap between us lately and I honestly feel like a single parent. hopefully we can sort things out...but when all it seems he cares about is DTD then I;m not so sure...dont know what I would do though if we decided to call it quits...just wish he would grow up and realise he is a parent now, not just a partner, and no he cant do whatever he wants whenever he wants.

with crying in their sleep, I've heard that they can be having nightmares about teething??? Dont know how true that is..lol. H does it sometimes, but I stick her dummy back in and she usually settles straight back to sleep.

Poor little J - I just had to give him panadol - he has a temp and is v whingey... annoyed as i think my FIL infected him on the weekend. he wasnt feeling well and i asked him to stay away - which he didnt... and now my poor little guy is sick.... grrrrrrrrrr

ETA SS just saw your post....J also moves around a lot in his sleep - he has been sleeping on his side for about 10 days now, just rolls straight onto his side.. and i ALWAYS find him ina totally diff part of the cot to where i left him. v diff from DS1 who always stayed put! LOL! I hope things work out withyour DF, having kids def puts a strain on your relationship, and i think moreso with your first bub as life chgs so much. is there anyt way you can get some time to go our for dinner/coffee/drinks/walk just the 2 of you and have a good chat? IMO both sides (mum and dad) have big adjustments to make and sometimes it really helps to both talka bout how you aree feeling... hugs.

mamapan - we started baby rice on Sunday. Zac has been watching us eat very closely for a month or so now, and started grabbing at our food, so figured it was probably about time. I don't know whether any of the rice actually made it down, but he seemed quite interested in it. He looked a little less impressed about it this morning, but was happy enough to have a go at it.

ss-storm - ah you poor thing. For what it's worth, I don't think your DP's behaviour is that out of the norm (unfortunately). I really feel for you - I hope things work out soon for you.

Oh Cate lucky you! I can't wait to start solids lol. I have been trying to work out when to do it - when I had the other kids it was 4mths - but these days it seems all confused - I have decided I will just follow her cues as you did.

mamapan I hope your little guy feels better soon. How annoying that you FIL made him sick - I wish people would be more considerate when they aren't well :wall:

Arlea is on the move already :( she wriggles all over the cot & off her floor rug onto the tiles..she made her way over to my sisters toes yesterday & bit them :rofl: and she has discovered her own toes, loves chewing on them it's SO cute :) I will have to get some pics up on FB.
I am so tired & frustrated with not getting anything done :doh: I feel like I am so scattered & all over the place. Not sure what is wrong with me...hopefully it will pass.

Cate - you could try rocking him until he's sleepy but not asleep and putting him down, then patting him or something? Isaac almost always wakes himself up when I put him down asleep, unless he is really tired. IDK if it will work, just an idea. :)

MamaPan - Normally the mechanic is really good, will check out little things for free, sometimes tops up oil/ coolant/ power steering fluid/ etc for free, gives us discounts, but this time he was shocking. It wasn't him that did the spray painting apparently but still, he was in charge of our car and he allowed the person to paint near it.
WOOHOO for rolling over, hopefully things settle down a bit for you.
I'd be so angry if my FIL or anyone else made my DS sick like that. grr makes me angry just thinking about it.

ss - I sometimes think things would be easier on my own. Most of the time I have to go and fix what DF has done anyway. He comes and asks me to help with the simplest things, like putting a nappy on DS or doing up the buttons on his clothes, apparently it's not him doing it wrong, the press studs on the bottom of his body suits are just too hard to figure out. Then after spending pretty much ALL day looking after DS mostly on my own he wants to hug me and kiss me and be all over me. :wall: Everytime I put Isaac down it's can I have a hug now? You never hug me anymore. Anyway enough of my ranting, just wanted to let you know your not alone :hug:

AFM - Isaac has started really laughing instead of just grunting and squealing. He's only done it twice but omg it's soo cute. :clap: I think he's going to start rolling soon too. When he's on his tummy it looks like he's trying. He's been pushing himself up on his knees alot lately too. Mind you I've thinking that for about a week now :rolleyes:
Isaac has been watching us eat for a while and every now and then I'll give him the tiniest little bit of what I'm eating, ie the sauce or something runny. But I don't think he's really ready for solids just yet. He doesn't really spit stuff out, just doesn't eat it.
How do you manage to fit that into the day anyway? I'm flat out BF, giving him tummy time and getting him to sleep. Not to mention DF making us go out somewhere almost every day. He just doesn't get that we cant do that anymore. I've explained it to him dozens of times and he says he gets it then still expects it to be ok to tell me we have to do this and that. It's so frustrating, especially when it's something he doesn't even need me for. But apparently he can't go anywhere without me. :wall:
Then when I am giving DS time to sleep or feed before going out, every 5 mins it's when do you think he's gonna wake up? Are you ready to go? How much longer is he going to be feeding for? IDBK why dont you ask him!?

When I sit DS in the pram/ bouncer/ car seat/ sometimes in my lap, he pulls his head forward like he's trying to sit up. I dont know why he does it, it's like he wants to sit forward but even when I sit him up in the pram he still does it. Sometimes he gets quite frustrated too. I don't think he's in pain. Any ideas?

yep Heva, DD does that pulling her head up thing. If I lay her down on a pillow, so she isn't laying down but not really sitting up either (reclining! Lol) then she will try and pull her head up like she is trying to sit up. Same as your DS, if she is in the pram or resting on my lap etc. I do sit on the floor with her in between my legs and she can sort of balance for a few seconds. I read it's good to sit them up like that, and hold them up so they are standing as it helps strengthen their muscles getting ready for sitting and walking.

DD is trying to move when on her tummy too..her legs and arms wiggle like mad and she grunts, I think she is trying really hard to crawl! She gets frustrated though because she isn't going anywhere.

Just wanted to say thanks for your support WRT DF issues...we had a talk last night, and whilst it didn't go down too well at the time, we have apologised and made up, and agreed to make more time for each other, as well as for DF to spend more time with DD. Will see how long it lasts...I really thought that was it though! He wouldnt talk to his mum about it either...I dont know if he will now that things have calmed down a little. She is a single parent and has done a great job by herself so she kind of knows what it is like! And I dont want my daughter to grow up in a 'broken home'. Anyway for the moment at least things are ok.
But Heva, yep that's exactly what I feel! The last thing I feel like when I've just put DD to bed and finally have some time to myself, is DF being all over me like a rash. Particularly when it's not just a cuddle that he wants...it always seems like he wants it to turn into something more.

Thanks again for all your hugs & words, they do really help and I'm so grateful for BB and my baby buddies!

I've been thinking about solids too...MCHN said not to start until 6 months, but I've heard of people starting way earlier than that and people keep asking me if she is on solids yet! She does watch me like a hawk when I'm having breakfast or morning tea! I do wonder if it will help her sleep better over night, the last week or so she has been waking at 2 or 3am for a feed, but won't go back to sleep for another hour and a half, then wakes up at 5am. Managed to get her back to sleep for an hour and a half this morning and we got up for the day at 7, but yesterday I was up at 6 because she wouldn't go back to sleep. I don't want to do 5am starts! I know 'they' say solids don't help with overnight sleeping, but I've heard a few people say that sleep improved after starting solids. She was going so well overnight too, either sleeping right through for about 10 or 11 hours, or waking up at 2am but going straight back to sleep when I put her back down after a feed.

Just quickly WRT solids - FWIW, I started all mine right on 4 mths. I know since then the advice has changed a bit, but I will be watching AR very closely when we get to 4 mths to see if she looks ready. One of the first things they had (besides veges, fruit & rice cereal) was toast & they loved it :p

I think generally it is not before 4 mths but definitely by / at 6 mths - and then depending on who you speak to / what you read, it varies. I have tried to pin down exactly when you are 'supposed to' & I can't work it out.
So I think the bedt thing to do is what Cate did - watch for their cues as to when they are ready :dunno: - anyone else??

Heva - Arlea has been pulling her head forward for a little while - I do think they are trying to sit up, clever llittle monkeys they are - impatient to get going!
I help her as much as possible. I think she is only a couple of weeks off sitting on her own, she has the strength but not the balance.

ETA - I think we are having a wonder week :( she will be 17 weeks on Friday, so bang on time.... very cranky the last couple of days & hard to please, hard to settle. I wonder what she will be doing after this....

ss_storm - I had a thought (!) Do you think maybe your DF is wanting 'more' of you to reassure himself that you still love him now that you've got 'somebody else' in your life? I think men actually find it quite challenging moving on from being the love of your life to having to share that love with somebody else. We know that they're not too bright sometimes :shhh:

jasp - that's a classic story, definitely one to save for the 21st!

re solids, my MCHN was happy to say that when she first started maternal nursing that they used to say to start solids by 8 weeks, and that the guidelines change every year or so. However, the general consensus seems (now) to be definitely not before 4 months as their digestions aren't developed enough, but that you should start by 6 months otherwise you can kind of miss the boat a bit.

Sorry for being away so long, I really feel like I don't have time for anything anymore.
Heva - in answer to your question many posts back about finding time to go to the gym, I am just having to make time. It is really, really hard. Husband and I have always been into fitness and so it is important to us but it is so hard finding the time. We just try to understand we both have to fit it in.
We are really struggling at the moment, not us, but life in general. Our business is a landscaping business and between now and Christmas is just mayhem. We are dealing with over 30 new enquiries a day and we are both on the computer til after 9pm each night. I just feel so tired all the time and wonder how we are meant to fit anything else into life! I am struggling with finding the time to deal with being back at work 2 days a week and helping out at night, looking after Sam and then finding time for me or just general stuff. Anyway, we know that Christmas will be here soon enough and we will have a two week break then.

SS Storm- Sam is the same with rocking. We have found last few nights we have rocked him then when he goes in his cot he isn't happy at all. Last few nights he has gone down at 6.15pm and doesn't actually go to sleep til 8pm. That is with several attempts at rocking etc. Tonight we just left him crying (he wasn't hysterical) but went up every 20 minutes or so to just pat him and check him. Finally at 8pm he got himself to sleep. I just don't want to be rocking him for the next year!! I figure that rocking him wasn't helping anyway as when you picked him up to rock him it didn't seem to calm him down.

Sorry for no other personals. Sam had his shots yesterday and was very sleepy today, had two really large sleeps of about 2 1/2 hours. He was very brave and didn't cry too much. He did some rolls a few weeks ago but seems to have gone cold on it. Hasn't really been rolling much but loves expressing himself more with his voice and loves trying to stand on his feet. Loves nappy free time too and really loves the bath now too.

SS Storm- sorry to hear about your troubles with hubby, I have a friend in a smiliar situation ( I think). She is the only one looking after their child. She had to go somewhere the other night and it was the first time in 11 months that he had looked after their boy on his own. She had to show him how to do everything and now the baby has issues getting anyone else to settle him to sleep. I hope that now you agree you need to spend more time together that things get better, I will be thinking of you. With babies and life, you both need to work as a team otherwise it just wont work and that means both of you have to have time out and help each other with the load of everything like house work etc.

Anyway, seeing as I am so exhausted I will say goodnight but hope everyone is doing well. I have read the posts and everyones little ones seem to be doing so well! It is really exciting! Better go spend time with hubby..

Sleep seems to be getting a bit better - he still wakes 2/3 times overnight for a feed but not like it was a week or so ago. he rolled that one time and that's it - loves going onto his side though so i guess it'll happen. he is very vocal and also likes to stand... i am trying to give him more time on his tummy now - he doesnt mind it now if i time it right
went to a mums and bubs movie this morning - J was great. i used to go when he was tiny and it was easy but i wasnt sure how he would go now. it was a success so I will be doing it again soon!

Okay, feel like I am losing it, well not quite but sort of. I am looking for some advice here. Sam has mainly been rocked to sleep since he was born. We always try to put him in his cot when he is tired and sleepy but mostly he then cries and we try either stroking his head and patting or light rocking. Often he needs resettling and will then get taken out of the cot at least once to rock again. Lately we are trying to stop rocking as much as Sam is really not learning to settle himself. I know he is young but we just want to start a little bit.
The last two afternoons he wakes around 3.30pm and even though he starts getting tired around 5pm he just won't go back to sleep, just lies there. So back up again for a feed around 6pm then because he is so tired I put him down around 6.15-6.30pm. The last two nights he just won't settle til 8pm and then sun goes down. First night tried rocking etc, but its like when you pick him up out of the cot he starts crying even more. That night I let him cry for about 40 minutes, it wasn't screaming just more whinging but he just won't settle. Nothing we do seems to help which is why we left him there as we tried rocking, aquarium on, stroking, patting. Last night same thing except he was hesterical. After 15 minutes of this I couldn't hack it, tried rocking didn't work, tried soothing, tried dummy for a few minutes, tried feeding for 5 minutes. 8pm came and my husband gave him the dummy and rocked him and wihtin 1 minute he was asleep. I can't stand listening to him that upset. I don't mind a bit of whingy crying but this was awful and nothing we did helped.
This morning, he is usually really good at settling but no, we are crying again. When I took him up this morning, I wrapped with one arm out (started doing for a week) and he just didn't want to be rocked. 10 minutes of rocking and he was crying still, so I put him in his cot with the aquarium on and he is whingy crying at moment. I think he may settle but it is doing my head in. I feel like I have completey lost control again and I don't know what to do!!
Sorry for the long winded essay, but just want some advice on what others do. I don't mind really rocking him but when we go out in the stroller becuase he just can't settle himself at all I have real troubles and I just want to start teaching him to settle a little. I am not keen on leaving him to cry for long periods of time, happy for about 20-30 minutes as long as it is just light crying or whinging. If he is hesterical I go and try to calm him but he doesn't even want to be calmed!! Its like becuase he has then been awake so long he is over it.
Okay, now I have that off my chest I will attempt at having a shower, he has been quiet for 5 minutes so fingers crossed.:wall:

hi all, feels like ages since i've posted in here. i got a tummy bug/gastro on sunday night & have been feeling pretty average, yesterday was the first day that i felt a bit human again!

jetta - i've found that rocking DS doesn't really work here either anymore. we haven't really tried much self settling here & i pretty much do whatever i need to to get DS to slee p - at the moment he feeds to sleep most of the time, who knows what it will be next week. it's changed many times since he was born so i figure it will change again. i do everything possible to avoid DS becoming hysterical because, like you, i find it so much harder to settle DS down again. i've also given up on the idea of set nap times etc because these also seem to be changeable & now we have more of a rhythm to our day rather than a routine. i feel less pressured & stressed this way. it's also helped me to deal with DS not being the most ideal/consistent day sleeper (some days he might only nap for an hour all day).

Jetta, don't know about the rocking but WRT him becoming very unsettled - Arlea has been doing this a bit lately, especially when she is very overtired & the ONLY thing that stops her screaming is distraction. I take her out of the room, or get DS2 to come & talk to her, anything to distract her. Once she has stopped then we can usually give her a bottle or rock her off to sleep. I know what you mean though - she was a pretty good self-settler & it seems to be going out the window :rolleyes:
I hope it's just part of the wonder week & will pass...

hi jetta. I really feel for you, esp as we are going thru a similar situation here. I second everything sarah said (corey and Zac sound virtually interchangeable!) I've posted on another thread about this too, and the two things that I've taken from all the replies and advice are:
1: just do whatever works for you and baby
2: at around 4 months their sleep patterns seem to go all to hell anyway :rolleyes:

a realisation I had too was that I was/am impatient. I wanted him to start self-settling - now! Now I understand that I need to help him learn how to do that, and that it will be a very gradual process...

it doesn't help when you're absolutely exhausted yourself as you have no reserves left.

I am working on developing sleep associations for Z - bath, massage, book, feed, rocking & lullabies, bed. I'm trying to progressively put him down slightly sooner so that he is less asleep and can hopefully work out what to do from there. I sit with him and hum with my eyes shut until I am sure he's asleep.

that's night-time - daytime naps are a whole other struggle for another day at this stage! typing this one handed with a very tired baby on my lap and still waiting to have a shower myself...

stick with it and try to get some rest yourself (haha)

Just wanted to pop in and say a quick hello to everyone, seems like for ever since I posted but I have been keeping up with everything.

Jetta, maybe try wrapping Sam again. I found that when I started trying to wean Ash from wrapping it made it near impossible for him to get to sleep. He would just grizzle/cry until he wore himself out completely and then would only sleep for 30 or 40 minutes. Now that I've started wrapping him again things are back to normal. I guess he just isn't ready. Mind you we still have the problem of him rolling onto his tummy and getting stuck, but if we rescue him quickly he doesn't wake up. Last night we thought we might try just putting him in his sleeping bag without wrapping him. I'd just fed him and he was sound asleep, but the minute I put him down and started doing up the bag his arms started flying around and he woke himself up :wall:

Jetta - Hugs we are going through the same here. Ditto to the advice Lovelycate has given. Keep up the sleep associations and be consistant. If he gets too upset change his scenry as Jasp mentioned then try agin. Eventually they do get it.

AFUS - Evie got her needles yesterday and she is not happy at all. She won't sleep unless there is a boob in her mouth and she has a temp. Her weight is 6.2kgs and lenght 64cms. She is so close to rolling too.

MissE - I took your lead and have introduced some water too.

Jetta- :hug: i know how frustrating it is when they won't sleep! We went out for dinner last night, H had been awake since 6.30 and she wouldn't go to sleep until nearly 10pm! She was so tired but just wouldn't go to sleep.
The others have given you some great advice, i dont think I can really add to it! Hayley has always been pretty good, although the last few days I've had to pat her to sleep. Today she has gone down fine though. I think it's probably something you'll have to wait out...but I'm sure it will end!

Bek- hope your little one gets over her needles quickly! I think we were so lucky not to have a reaction to her 4 month ones..I was ready for it though! Knowing my luck next time will be a shocker! Lol. She must be a long and skinny bub? I got Hayley weighed last week and she was 7.5kg and 63cm long, a little chubby bubby! :p

Not much happening here, has been so hot we have just stayed at home. Going out tomorrow though, have a few things to do at the shops.

i've been reading but not posting much, just been mega busy with weddings and stuff. We're all good, fred has discovered her feet and spends all day trying to catch them. If i put them near her face she just giggles and laughs and tries to eat them. She has also worked out how to scream which is cute, but noisy. We've also just started some solids. At dinner she yells at us if there isn't some food on her tray and love to try everything we are eating. She has now tried avocado, banana, bread, yogurt and farex. I'm doing a mix of the old style of feeding and new style. She seems to be enjoying it and loves to taste the food. The look on her face when she tries something new is priceless! She has learnt how to hold her spoon and get it into her mouth and can also hold the bread in her hand and get it in there. Our dog also loves the food that is being dropped on the floor.

Sorry for the lack of personals. Just remember I have read all your posts and am wishing you all the best with our little ones :)

ss- Isaac loves standing up, he looks like he's really proud of himself when he does it. He also grunts and gets quite frustrated at tummy time. some days he manages to move around in circles, but most of the time he just lifts one side of his body off the mat a couple of times then gets tired, puts his head down and screams at the floor. It must be so frustrating for them.Glad to hear things with DH are better, hopefully it lasts :hug:

Jasp- Isaacs the same, he's got the strength but not the balance. He's been strong enough for ages though so who knows when he'll get it.

Jetta- My goodness you guys are busy. I don't even have a job and barely find time for a shower once every couple of days :redface: I don't know how you do it but I absolutely admire you (and anyone else who can) for it.
As for not sleeping Isaac was exactly the same a few weeks back. It lasted about a week or so now he is pretty much back to normal, I had to do a couple of things differently, but we got there, thank goodness. Hopefully it's just a wonder week and everything will go back to normal :hug: Do you have a routine when you put him down? ie I lie DS down put a blanket over him, put his dummy in, then say "go to sleep, mummy loves you" and walk out of the room. That might help him to learn to self settle.

MamaPan- Probably a stupid question but... What's the difference between the mums and bubs and a normal session? Do they have the volume a little lower or anything or is it just a session where people can take thier babies and it doesnt matter if they cry? I've been thinking about going but I don't want to damage DS ears among other things.

Ryatha- sounds like your DD is going great guns, what a clever little miss. How old is she? She's well ahead of my DS and he is 20 weeks.

Hi everyone else, hope you and your families are well.

AFM- Haven't been doing much, did a massive clean up of our bedroom today because it was a tip. We have a massive room and you could barely see the floor:redface:. I also sorted through all of my clothes and now have a stripey bag full of stuff to either throw or give away.
Aside from that it's been pretty hot here the last few days so we've been swimming in our pool. Isaac LOVES it, almost as much as he loves the bath. I really want to get him into swimming lessons, but it seems everytime I think about booking him in something comes up and we cant afford it.
I've been thinking lately about getting ourselves onto a better diet. So I've decided we're going to cut out as many preservatives and other "bad stuff" as possible. The only thing I'm not sure about is how I'm going to find the time to cook more stuff from scratch. Oh and what to cook. :lol: I'm not the best cook in the world - not terrible but not great- but hey anyone can learn... right? I hope cooking skills aren't hereditary, if they are I haven't got much hope. lol

hi all just a quick note while i have called in home kids and i have been staying at their dads where it is cooler my house has been way to hot most of the time its cooler outside then inside. anton had his 4 month needles on wednesday he handled them real well. asm my throid levels are way too low im on different meds then what i was on to brring it back up im also getting ontop of my depression which im happy back

We have had a rather interesting 4 1/2 months!! to say the least......
Cam suffered from a slight bad case of a nappy rash when only a few weeks old (staphalogical i think, other words burned skin syndrome), wasnt good, we struggled with BF even though BF was working confused me too lol (see other post on here i made a few months back), completely stopped at around 12-13weeks, He has been diagnosed with Colic and Reflux, he is on reflux formula, soda and rubarb drops, and wind drops. He still quite whingy and demanding baby, my DP struggles with him and i cant ask him for help b/c he gets fustrated within secs of being with him if Cam starts to cry. Im not sure if its b/c Lachie was a "easy" baby in comparison or what the go is, we have struggled really struggled. I got the Labour i wanted and it was great, but its been down hill since then. To top it off he is teething pretty badly atm!!! on top of which its now day 13 of TT Lachie, but he is taking like a pro to it so not that bad but still alot.....

Lachie is playing in the toilet...i gotta go before it wakes Cam up......who hasnt slept much today at all!!

Bekz I hope Eva is doing better after her needles, it so horrible seeing them sick. Is she liking the water? Ash loves having his sippy cup but it seems more spills out of his mouth than goes down. Oh well, I think he just likes the experience of it.

How are the sleep associations going Cate? Any improvements in the naps?

AFM everything is tracking along pretty well at the moment. Ash's naps have finally improved. We seem to get at least one longer sleep of 1.5 to 2 hours each day which is great, I can actually get some things done. This is good because I've started doing a bit of work from home and it lets me get a run at it. DH and I have been doing a bit of christmas shopping the last couple of weeks and I have had so much fun picking santa presents out for Ash. We've got quite a few fisher price things that are 6 months +, but hopefully come christmas he will be at a stage when he can play with them. We also bought a high chair on the weekend. Only put him in it once so far, but he seems to like it.

Anyway, better run DH will be home soon and Ash should be waking up any minute. Hope everyone is well and bubs are giving their mumma's lots of sleep. x

just a quick one, about to head off to bed...

Hayley's sleep is much better during the day now, it's great I can actually get stuff done! The last couple of nights haven't been so good...to bed at about 6.30 but then she is awake by 8. last night she didn't go back to sleep until 10 and that was after I put her in bed with me! Tonight she is asleep now after waking at 8, but I kept her up until a bit after 8.30. Will see what time she wakes up!

She has started rolling onto her tummy in her cot which makes bedtime even more fun. Not!
She did manage to roll from her tummy onto her back 3 times yesterday, so hopefully she has finally worked out how to do that and i won't have to roll her back over a zillion times a day when she gets sick of being on her tummy! Although she can really squiggle around a bit now when she's on it, has turned right around and squiggled backwards off her mat! Then she gets the legs and arms going like she is trying so hard to move more!

We might be moving next month too, fingers crossed we get approved for the house! It's in Tumut, which is about 100ks from Wagga. House is gorgeous, older style with wooden floorboards, gigantic yard which is split into front/back, back verandah is enclosed with railings and a gate (so can lock the dog out or the kid in!), 4 bedrooms and new kitchen and bathroom with a couple of little storage rooms. It's a huge house and I can't believe the size of the yard, our dog would love it! real estate didn't know if owner would allow pets, so hopefully they say it's alright. I know I shouldn't because I don't want to be disappointed, but I'm already thinking about packing and cleaning this place! Might be a struggle with an almost 6 month old.

Thought about starting solids too, but I think I will wait until after we move. She has always got her hands in her mouth, particularly her thumb or her pointer finger, even when I'm trying to feed her! SHe'll grab my hands and try and stuff them in her mouth too...so I dont know if it is her teeth or if she is ready to start solids. She doesn't seem hungry, the last couple of days she hasn't finished any of her bottles! But she is also really interested in what I'm eating, and tried to grab some chips from me today while we were having lunch (sorry kid, you're not starting solids by eating hot chips!).

Anyway better go before laptop battery runs out...and this was supposed to be a quick post!!! LOL

Jess - So glad to hear your getting on top of your depression. Well done to you. I know how hard it is (I had clinical deppression when I was younger).

Naomi - I don't have any advice just :hug:'s. You've certainly had a tough time, hopefully things start to look up soon. Well done to Lachie in regard to TT sounds like he's doing really well. I find it really hard looking after one little monkey, I totally admire anyone who manages with two or more.

Miss E - I can't wait to do some proper chrissy shopping, my only problem will be restraining myself. lol. I think we'll get DS 3 prezzies and leave it at that lol. I've been wondering if we should get a high chair or not. do we really need it? I could feed him in his bouncer or on my knee when the time comes, could be messy though. lol. better to have 2 hands free and a tray would be good so he can have finger food. ... IDK, what does everyone else think?

SS - thank goodness Hayley's sleeping better.

AFM - Just recently I've really missed being pg. Feeling Isaac move in my belly and putting my hands on it and feeling so close to him. I sometimes catch myself holding my tummy and it makes me feel a bit empty. I love him to bits and so glad he's here but I really miss that feeling. I didn't really enjoy being pregnant, but the parts I did like, I really miss.
I also feel like he's grown up so quickly. Where did my tiny, little baby go?

Isaac's just started laughing properly the last few days. Real little giggles. It's soo cute, just melts my heart.
He almost rolled from back to tummy last night on our bed. but got stuck because his arm was in the way :lol: He's worked out how to move around in circles on his belly, theres lots of grunting involved though. Must be hard work.
