Re: Babies born ~ May 2014
We've been getting smiles for a little while and had our first giggle this week. Miss E has been super alert from the word go. She has only put on 600g (at 4 weeks) but grew 7cm in length and 2cm around her head :) she is growing out of her 0000 in length but most of her 000 are still so big.

Re: Babies born ~ May 2014
Oh I can't wait for giggles!! Bubs just sort of squeals at me now..
What sort of slings/carriers do you girls use? I carry bubs all the time but I don't have a sling and I'm thinking it would definitely be a good investment!!!

Re: Babies born ~ May 2014
Ozstar - yay for giggles! I am getting a tonne of smiles but no giggles yet! Soon though I'm sure!
Emma - I use the moby wrap for when baby is really little as it keeps them close and cuddled up to you. I also have an ergo which I use for bigger kids.. That will last a lot longer than the wrap and you can do side and back carry too!
-
Re: Babies born ~ May 2014
I have a close carrier which I love while they are little. I also have a manducca and an ergo.
-
Re: Babies born ~ May 2014
Hi ladies
We're getting smiles here too. Not on a regular basis yet though. She has cooed a little.
Emma I have an ergo which I love.

Re: Babies born ~ May 2014
I love all the little conversations miss E is having with us all. I think she is going to be quite the chatterbox

Re: Babies born ~ May 2014
Getting my first smiles from Adam so cute! He's hit 5kg this wk, he's turning into a tubby little thing!

Re: Babies born ~ May 2014
Ash - we have had to get Jason colief. Infacol wasn't helping. Marks grandma passed last Wed at 2am. She lasted 12 weeks 1 day from diagnosis. She is at peace now. Funeral is this Thursday which is going to be difficult. The family have asked us to take Jason and marks aunty Is flying home from Canada for it. I'm just so glad Mary got to meet and spend time with Jason. Talking of which he was 10lb the Fri before last. He's started smiling loads and is in his own cot. I'm having a lot of issues from the spinal and epi together. Got to have more blood tests this week. Hope everyone is ok. Will have a read and bbl x

Re: Babies born ~ May 2014
Ummmm..... Can I share your thread? It appears no one birthed in June except me, and July bellybuddies thread was quiet too.... I could do with a thread to join...
Peanut arrived on 20th June so is only a week and a half old. BFing has proven challenging especially as the hospital had me topping up with formula and waking her to feed 3 hourly during the day and 4 at night. We saw a LC on Tuesday which was great, bit while over hot the theory about how to get the latch right... In practice it's still challenging and I feel like we spend the feed in a perpetual state of on and off and on and off.... I've found it much harder than I hoped. Tell me it gets easier.
-
Re: Babies born ~ May 2014
Hi my turn, welcome and congrats on your little peanut.
Yes the latching and bfing in general does get easier.
My little girl turned 5 weeks yesterday and although we're still doing mixed feeding my LC is working very hard with me to help me get my supply back, which dropped when I had to stop feeding due to cracked and bleeding nipples from bad attachment.
After a bit of time off and perseverance bub is feeding nicely now and attaching well, she just needs more milk from me to give the formula the flick.
I had always thought and expected bfing to be a lovely bonding experience and an enjoyable part of motherhood, I had NO idea how challenging and difficult it could be.
Stick with it and work with the LC, you'll get there. Although I'm still working through the challenges myself, it's much more pleasant now that our attachment has improved and I'm enjoying the time I spend feeding/bonding with my little girl now.
How are you finding motherhood otherwise? Getting any sleep? Lol

Re: Babies born ~ May 2014
I'm exactly like Shanleem Myturn, I struggled from day 1 with cracked bleeding nipples and low supply and ended up supplementing with formula. Im also trying to wean out formula and feed exclusively. Im on Domperidone from Doc and getting advice from ABA. I also found reading Dr Jack Newman from the NCIB's website and his videos brilliant. Im having to use compression when I feed as I have a lazy drinker who looses interest when my flow slows down and he uses me as a pacifier! So I have to compress to get him drinking again. I've heard feeding gets easier from 6 wks onwards. Im still working on it at 5 wks including a good latch. Im hoping like you it gets easier. I may never get a 100% supply but I'm trying! Good luck and keep us posted. There's also a Facebook page for May Mummas if you're interested. Welcome to the thread :)

Re: Babies born ~ May 2014
Welcome and congratulations myturn. BF can definitely be hard work, even with my third bub it wasn't easy. I hope it improves for you quickly.
Footsteps I am sorry for your loss :(
Little miss is 6 weeks now. She put on about 1kg and 7cm in length. We are struggling a little with wind but seeing the osteopath. She has a cold at the moment too so not a lot of sleep happening, I've become an expert at dozing while mostly sitting up with her on my chest lol.

Re: Babies born ~ May 2014
BF is the Domperidone working for you? I've been on it to 2 weeks now and not seen a big change in supply and have been advised by LC to increase to a double dose to see if that helps.
-
Re: Babies born ~ May 2014
Just popping in regarding Domperidone. I used it for 13 months and initially built up to 9 a day under guidance of a LC. It requires a high dose usually to have any effect. Also water intake and Herbs of Gold Breastfeeding Support at 5 a day (build up to it) worked for us as I have diagnosed low supply.

Re: Babies born ~ May 2014
Hi myturn! Your more than welcome! Hope the bfing gets easier for you. Your doing a great job. In fact all you struggling mums are. I have been so impressed by the perseverance in this group of mammas! I have never had a really hard time like many of you. I mean my first it was harder, but not as bad as many, but having done this three times I have watched on as so many mums have struggled. So often they just decide that they wanna spend their time doing something different, and that's cool, but I have been really surprised by the tenacity and dedication to bfing in this group. You guys are doing great! I have no idea if I would have fed so much if it had been half as hard as what some of you have had to cope with.

Re: Babies born ~ May 2014
I had so many problems breast feeding! Amelia was born with a lip tie and her tongue was short so she had a really bad latch (instead of sucking she would just chomp at my nipple!) which caused bleeding/bruised/cracked nipples and I also have flat nipples! We were a match made in hell! Haha we tried nipple shields but because of her latching problems they just didn't work!
I'm now express feeding but I also have a low supply so I express her morning feed and her nightly feed and the rest is formula.. I have been trying to express more during the day to build my supply.. I also feel like my milk might be going, every time I express I feel like I am getting less and less out..
I want to give her as much of my milk as possible but it's looking pretty bleak. So long as I can still give her some everyday I am happy with that!
-
Re: Babies born ~ May 2014
Thanks lovelies. I had the MCH nurse visit today and she has put on 140g since Tuesday, exclusively breastfed - such relief! So she is back to birth weight by two weeks. We are still working on the latching, but it's definitely better, and I know how to fix it now. I'm also managing to pump and store some in the freezer. Which feels good.
I think the universe (or god or whatever you believe created the world) got it wrong.... From an evolutionary perspective BFing should be so much easier.....
-
Re: Babies born ~ May 2014
Haha definitely my turn! I expected baby to born and latch straight on and it would be smooth sailing from there.. But I was in for a rude shock haha
-
Re: Babies born ~ May 2014
How is everyone's bub sleeping? I put A down after her night feed at 9pm and she wakes up at 1am and then 5-5:30 :) so I'm very happy and feel quite rested!
-
Re: Babies born ~ May 2014
My A goes down at night after a feed at around 10-11pm and will wake somewhere between 3-5, then will wake again between 7-9 depending on what time she fed during the night. So I'm really happy with how she's sleeping.
Apart from today, which for some reason she's not wanting sleep, she usually sleeps for 2-3 hour stretches, often I have to wake her for feeds.
It's working out so well that I've managed to go out for lunch 3 times, and out for dinner with hubby and bub once already. She just slept her way through each time.

Re: Babies born ~ May 2014
Thanks Bella!
Shanleem I'm on 2 tablets x 3 times a day. Doc said if I don't see a difference by the end of the month that I probably won't. Fingers crossed.
Emmalee that's what I was doing a feed at night and morning but I'm feeding every feed now and topping up with formula. Well done on persevering and giving A some of your milk! Ad sleeps from 10 to 1 and then until 5am, pretty happy with that although I think Its the formula! If I go exclusive bfeeding I think we may be up more often!
-
Re: Babies born ~ May 2014
BF I'm on the same dose as you, and feeding the exact same way. BFeeding from both sides then topping up with formula.
I think the meds are working, just slowly. I leak all the time now and I wasn't getting that before. I certainly could not ever go without Brest pads. But A will take an almost full formula top up at every feed, so either she's just a guts and/or having growth spurts or the meds affect on my supply is not enough yet.
I'll keep my fingers crossed for both of us that it works.
-
Re: Babies born ~ May 2014
What is A taking Shanleem? Ad is a very hungry boy! He feeds both sides then will take anything from 60-100ml Aptamil Formula! He's 5kg already! He's got a chubby little face now lol!http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/07/04/ge4ysa8y.jpg
-
Babies born ~ May 2014
We're feeding from both sides then topping up with anywhere from 50-100ml of aptamil also. She gained 470g in 9 days after we started this regime.
A's 5kg is awesome, we've only just got back to birth weight but have gained an additional 350g so getting back on track now.
I've only just increased my Domperidone dose this week from 3-6 daily. So, I'm hoping the extra dosage will get my supply back enough.

Re: Babies born ~ May 2014
She is turning into such a little character now! Definitely getting lots of smiles now, just waiting for a giggle..
She absolutely loves bath time.
-
Re: Babies born ~ May 2014
OMG (I hate using that term, but it's the only thing that fits), A just slept through the night and had a straight 8 hour sleep. Mummy feels pretty amazing this morning, and I'm sure daddy will too if he ever wakes up and realises what happened. 😀
-
Re: Babies born ~ May 2014
No way! Congrats Shanleem!! Haha
-
Re: Babies born ~ May 2014
Wow that's fantastic Shanleem! Looking forward to that day, I'm tired! lol
-
Re: Babies born ~ May 2014
Woohoo! That's awesome! Go shanleem! I just posted my birth story. My friend who videod my birth has finished editing it, and will post it on her blog in a few days. I will send you all the link later. It is so beautiful, I love it. It is the perfect end to eddies birth, being able to watch it all over again and seeing my beautiful babies surround me with love whilst I laboured.

Re: Babies born ~ May 2014
Can't wait to see it Bella, your last one was so beautiful, so I'm looking forward to seeing this one. I expect I'll cry even more seeing it, now that I have experienced child birth for myself, I think the connection to the emotions will be even stronger.
-
Re: Babies born ~ May 2014
Wow I can't wait to see your birth vid Bella, I agree shanleem it will be so much more emotional now that I have experienced it..
I still sit and stare at my girl in amazement. I can't believe that she is mine and that I grew her and created life inside my belly! It gives me chills and makes me feel so strong. I never could have imagined it would be this amazing.
-
Re: Babies born ~ May 2014
Same, your last video made me cry so I'm with the girls, this one will be more emotional!
Shanleem how long were you told to take the domperidone and do the regime you're on? Some days it feels like my supply isn't increasing as Ad still takes 100ml some feeds even after being feeding from me for 45 mins! How long were you told to feed for before top ups?
-
Re: Babies born ~ May 2014
I started on 3 tablets daily and after 2 weeks was told to increase to 6 tablets daily, for another 2 weeks. I've been on the 6 tablet per day now for 5 days. I'm not seeing a big change yet either.
a is also taking up to 100ml top up after her feeds but I was told to feed her for a 10 minute max on each breast so she doesn't get to tired and end up just using me as a pacifier.
-
Re: Babies born ~ May 2014
I should add, my LC thinks the drop in supply is due to the blood loss I had following A's birth. I had a 1000ml haemorrhage, followed by the standard loss.
-
Re: Babies born ~ May 2014
Im on the 6 a day for two weeks now. I've noticed a slight increase as I can hear him gulping for first 10 minutes each side (never had that before) and yeah I think after that he slows down and after 15 minutes I take him off as he's using me as a pacifier too! Did your LC say how long to stay on meds for? I could be same as I had a lot of blood loss after forceps and 3rd degree tear
-
Re: Babies born ~ May 2014
If the meds actually increase my supply to the extend that I can exclusively bfeed then I will probably have to stay on them until I finish bfding. The dose will be reduced somewhat but it will be a permanent thing.
I don't mind though if it means I can exclusively bfeed.
-
Re: Babies born ~ May 2014
Yeah exactly. I wonder how long it will take us to get bfeeding exclusively. .Hopefully soon!
-
Re: Babies born ~ May 2014
I know that Bfing correctly isnt supposed to hurt.... But I just can't seem to get the attachment correct and it still does. I keep hoping she will magically just get it...that maybe when her me know stronger she will open wider and put her head in the right spot.
