Connie, the latest research shows that breastfed babies drink the same amount of milk each day from 4 weeks of age until solids are introduced ( usually 6 months). Then it decreases very slowly. The daily amount will vary from baby to baby but about 750ml per day is average. Formula fed babies would be the same in that their calorie requirements will be static until nearly 12 months of age. Ff babies might need more solids earlier to make up their nutrition but the milk is still most important.

I would say that the type of solids would factor in too. Rice cereal and purees are low calories and therefore shouldn't replace milk. Meat and dairy foods are important early foods and are higher calorie. If milk is being reduced by so much you would need lots of that in his diet I expect.

Did you ask the doc where he got that info from?

I didn't ask him... so far everything he has suggested/recommended has worked well for us so I have had no reason to question his judgement.

The truth is, I think each baby is different and I think there is new research coming out all the time which can contradict the last study, so I don't tend to get too hung up on that stuff.

For now, I am going to keep going as I did today.. it seemed to work well for George, he had 3 good naps, and has gone to bed at his regular time etc with no issues. If I see it's causing issues, or he stops gaining weight etc, I will re-evaluate it.

Thanks fuzzy, I'll go have a look tomorrow. Not that he'll get much of a chance to play with it, we leave for Sydney on Saturday for 5 days.

Connie - I just realised that it was target in the US (arrrh internet).. so not sure about here. Have a great time in Sydney! Glad the solids introduction is going well.

Chloe is doing great. She is 15 weeks and weighs 6.7 kg and is 63.5 cm long. Nolonger in the 90th percentile - now in the 75th! Rolling continually from back to stomach but is yet to master the stomach to back roll. She just gets stuck on her tummy. Smiling lots and as of today has discovered that she can scream. Not cry - just scream. Weird. Drooling a little - mostly when she 'talks' to us or blows rasberries. And yep she is sucking on her fists with the occasional stray finger that gags her.

Was going to start solids next week but have decided to postpone it until the 5 month mark on child health nurses advice.

Connie - yeh I got mine deals direct! The trampoline thing Is great and u can adjust it 3 heights, Bella is now big enough she is jumping off it! So cute!

Not doing solids till 6 months at least here. A lactation consultant - pinky makay told me they need to be fully sitting and have a strong neck etc for it so they can be really into it and enjoy it too, Bella is no where near it but the biggest thing for me is if babies have reactions to foods I don't want to find out this young..

Glad George has been taking it well. I find feeding Ash a big thing so definately not in a rush to start bella.

Buzzie - love the new pic of Bella.

Connie - hope you get that activity centre.... good that George is going so well. 8.4kg is hefty weight for a little premie! Hannah puts everything in her mouth - including both hands at times and sometimes too far so she gags. Her gag is so cute! And drool, but some days more than others.

Bec - is that a new pic is Isaac? He is looking mighty cute!

Deana - did you end up starting Blake on solids? If so how did you go?

Chuckie - it was good to read about Pearl.

Kirsten - poor Sam with his abrasion spot on his chin. Glad the combination of happy pills and therapist is working. Amazing how much better the world is huh? I can hear the positivity in your post now! Yay.

Fuzzy - That was cheap as chips in Bali for the car hire! Chloe looks like she is a baldy - just like Hannah.

Hello to Apes & Isla, Belfie & Annika, Wite & Harlow

AFM - I still feel a bit under the weather at times from this cold, but it seems to be getting much better and is probably almost on the way out. Finally after 2 weeks.

It was my brother's 50th yesterday but it was a fizzer - he fell in the shower and hit his head, managed to open up a gaping wound just above his knee and also took some skin off his wrist, oh and split his lip. He started to vomit blood just as the party started so it was off to the hossy for him. He stopped vomiting at the hospital so didn't get any antienemtic meds but started vomiting again once home from hossy. We came home yesterday and haven't heard how he is today, although I have tried calling. I am feeling a bit glum about it all really, as he's not well to begin with. It's probably old blood that he's swallowed from his split lip, but still it's worrying. He really has been in the wars.

For the past month, I have been experiencing some weird warming/burning sensations in my feet which have also moved more recently to my legs. I got an x ray but nothing obvious - like a pinched nerve or anything. I got a referral to a neurologist and the first one I called the first non urgent appointment was 19th April! I managed to keep calling around and got an appointment for 1 Feb and then today ( yep - on a sunday) one called me back and said they will see me Wednesday and mentioned in passing what the sensation is called. Neuropathy. So of course I googled it. Seems it can mean something nasty and complicated is causing it or something simple - like too much Vit B6. So on Wednesday the neruologist will order from for some nerve conducitivity testing and a MRI and some bloods. I am pretty impressed to find all that out on a Sunday. So hopefully will find out pretty soon what is causing it. Of course it's not cheap. It's not painful, just a weird sensation - sort of feels like warm water on my skin all of a sudden.

Hannah is going well. Although today about 4.30pm she started to grizzle which then turned into a full on cry that sounded like she was in pain. The only position that seemed to relieve her discomfort was lying across my arm. As soon as I moved her the cry would start again. I tried to massage her tum and bicycle her legs. Gave her a bath which she seemed to enjoy and then she fed well and went to sleep..... she was asleep by 5.30pm! Way to early! So tonight I am going to try waking her when I go to bed for a feed, and hopefully she will skip the 2am feed and sleep through. It's weird having her asleep so early. Oh Hannah is not rolling yet either... sometimes she looks like she's interested. But I am happy enough for her not to be yet. Oh I realised the other day that Hannah no longer keeps her hands all bunched up in a fist - you know like new borns do? When was it that our babies grew up from being a new born?

Hannah was 4.56 kg born and is now 6.99 kg and 67 cm long. I think her noggin is 43 cm now. Not sure of percentiles. will have to work it out. I think George is the winner in terms of weight gain thou'- little champion that he is.

Anyway, will let you know how I go on Wednesday but there are not likely to be many answers given then... but at least it's a start to try and work out what is going on. Give your gorgeous little ones a big hug!

Dustmite just hasn't checked in for ages and ages has he?

Lol I'm the same. X was really hard work, plus I don't want the extra work yet lol! I suppose I'll start at about 5-6 mths if I have to hahaha. We go to Royal Children's Hossie for X's allergies and they actually said that starting earlier rather than later is now the way to go... but also taking bubba's readiness into account as well.

hiya to everyone. I'm back from Tassie, DH is still dizzy & unwell. All a bit stressful so am trying to be super-proactive with my stress relieving strategies! Annika is going great guns, fat as butter. She now wakes up in the morning & just chats, it's so cute. I discovered I CAN manage two littlies on the plane on my own (worst moment was X "posting" all his matchbox cars to the row behind!!!). Otherwise Annika mostly slept which was great. And the hostie carried X down the stairs for me when we landed (little old Tassie airport makes you do the hard work yourself!), so that was nice of her, cos he ain't light!

    Hi mumma's & bubba's

Dory, hope the sensation in your legs is nothing too serious. Must be a weird feeling though.

Belfie, how awful your DH is still unwell. I didn't know vertigo could last that long. Glad you had a great time in Tassie and good on you for mastering 2 kids on the plane!

Re- solids... Im not trying Isla until 6 months and didn't try Bodie till 6 months also.
I have Coeliac Disease (gluten intolerance) and have been advised by doctors/specialists to hold out on solids till 6 months just in case Isla has what I have. She also needs to be on a normal diet until 12 months so we can then test her by blood test to see if she has it. This is what we did with Bodie which he came back negative and that was great but it can also be diagnosed later in life. So I really hope none of my kids have it, if so they will have to be on a gluten-free diet their whole life like their mummy. I was diagnosed when I was 2 yrs.
There are a few mothers in my Mothers Group that have already started their babies on solids. They were complaining that their babies were always really unsettled after feeds (they are b/feeding). Each to their own I guess.

Took Isla to the peadiatrician the other day as I was advised to see him by my GP as Isla has a small Fontinelle (sp?) which is the soft spot in her head. All good, the pead just said it was small but some bubs have small spots and some are big and the bone wasn't grown over so that was the main thing.

Isla is now 6.25kg 64cm length (90th Percentile!) and 40.2cm head circum.

    Hope your all well xo

Dory - yes that was a new pic, and now there's yet another new one (he is sure to be embarrassed by this hat when he's older.. it was a gift from some Irish friends, and I love it)! I hope those weird sensations go away and are not anything serious.

Connie - have a great time in Sydney! I'm going back there in a couple of weeks, with mum this time so it should be much easier.

Belfie - glad you enjoyed Tassie! Well done on travelling with the two little ones!

Isaac now has a dummy, I found one that he actually likes.. he loves sucking, and so far the dummy has been great to settle him with. He has been getting to sleep really late though, the other night he didn't sleep until 11pm, and he had his bath etc at the normal time of 6:30pm.. I don't know what's going on but it's been about 4 nights in a row of going to sleep very late. Last night was not so bad, he was asleep by 9pm. He's not up crying or anything, just awake and very alert like daytime play time. Any ideas?? I don't know how his pattern has changed like this.

Hi to everyone and cuddles for your bubs

I have to add about dummies.. I never realised they were such a PITA. Seriously. So annoying, every time it gets spat out or knocked out by his hands, it has to be put back in otherwise there is major protest. I can't wait until he figures out how to a) keep it in his mouth, and b) put it back in himself

Connie - ur so lucky u found one on eBay!! I was looking for ages otherwise I would of gone eBay one!

Dory - omg how horrible for you and ur brother! So hope he recovers ok and you sort yours out

Belfie - welcome back! My turn now YAY lol so nice the lady helped you! I just die carrying the 2 of them!
And yes with solids Hard work you ain't kidding! Ash has always been very fussy!!

Apes - what a pita with the diet stuff yet at the same time I guess if u had it as well as your kids u could just cook all the same stuff ...
With the 'soft spot' I can't spell it either lol I think bellas is bigger than ashs, but yeh I heard the growing together part is the thing to watch.

Bec - I think babies sleep just randomly change anyway and we may not ever know why. Isaac will prob keep changing so don't be surprised..
I so get the annoying dummy thing! Bella Loves hers and has had it from birth but is only just now slowly keeping it in. I would never put her over my shoulder with it in tho! That wouldn't last 2 seconds! Lol

Hi everyone else, omg yeh I thought of dustmite just yesterday!! Wonder how there going with their little man!
Nothing interesting here. Ash starts childcare on 1st feb so will be VERY quiet around the house!
Bella has her shots that day too
Tassie on the 27th!! Woot! Then we move house! Mums given the offical date 28th feb she will get someone else to move in - which is fine - pushes me to get a move on!

    Hi everyone,

Dory - Yeh Chloe is pretty much a baldi. Well she has light strawberry blond hair (NOT RANGA as her dad says ha ha) so its hard ot see in photos. Let us know how you get on at the doc tomorrow. At least there is no pain involved hey

Belfie - your poor DH. I hope it goes away soon. Is it the sort of thing that fixes itself?

Apes - good idea with solids for Isla. I hope she isnt gluten intolerant too. It must make things pretty hard as they get older.

Bec - Not sure about Isaac but Chloe has a strict bedtime routine. Bath at 6:15 then at 6:30 its food + story + more food and she is completely zonked out by 7 and asleep. If she is sleeping I wake her at 5:15 - this way she is ready for bed at 7. We dont use dummies but I imagine that they would help. Chloe has a stuffed dog that she sucks on instead.

Buzzie - exciting times ahead hey! Well except for the shots ha ha

As I typed this she just rolled from her back to her tummy then over again onto her back! She goes back to tummy all the time but this is the first tummy to back she has done! Chloe has her shots this Friday. She is officially 16 weeks today 4 MONTHS OLD!!! dont know why my ticker is wrong..

I hope all the Queenslanders here are not affected by the floods.. just devastating watching the news today

fuzzy - Yay Chloe for the rolling! Isaac does have a bedtime routine (I hate using .. feed, bath, massage, then another feed and always (until now) falls asleep with that last feed. I haven't changed anything.

dory - I hope your brother is ok

I took Isaac to get weighed and measured today for the first time in a month.. almost 7kg, and in 80th percentile, and in 40th percentile for length at 60cm long. Chubba bubba

    Hi all,

Bec - just lately Pearl has been sleeping in until about 10:30am (she feeds around 3am, then around 6am then goes straight back to sleep). Because of this she has always been a lete nighter (about 10pm - 11pm) which is a PITA. I have just started trying to wind the bedtime back a bit and she finally went to sleep tonight at 9:15pm. I think Fuzzy is right waking them if they end up having a late sleep (problem is P didn't go to sleep until about 5pm tonight!!) I find it hard to do anything regularly with P except feed, play sleep because she makes up her own mind about sleep times during the day so I don't really get a say. Apparently at about 4 months they should be 2hrs up, 2hrs down and P sort of keeps to that during the day but like Isaac as soon as the evening rolls around she is wide awake!!!

Buzzie - P had her 4month shots yesterday and she cried a bit more than the 2month ones but was alright with some extra attention (and panadol) last night. When do you head to Tassie? I bet you are hanging out! and remind me what the go is re Rob and house hunting - are you moving in together?

Fuzzy - Thanks for those details re the holiday - we still haven't made up our minds what we are doing but it is great to have a recommendation. Wow Chloe sounds like she might be physical (like her mum??) P is yet to roll anywhere!

Belfie - sounds like your family is continuing to have a rough trot health wise. I hope Jon feels better soon - vertigo sounds horrible! Lucky you are such a supermum and are holding it all together.

AFM - got Pearl weighed for the first time since Nov 22 yest. She is now 6kg and 62cm - pretty much bang on 50th percentile for both. One of her ears sticks out and she has still got a bit of a mis-shapen head (I think from a combo of being breech and pushing against my ribs and laying on it after birth). Dr and nurse both commented on her ear though so hopefully when her head comes good it will sort itself out. If not I reckon we would prob get it pinned as it is just one ear so v noticable (if it was both it would be alright). Just read that the ear is related to the head and should mend itself. Bec - you have inspired me and I have applied to start a MBA part time next month (am yet to hear if I got in so will let you know. Basically since my vasospasm is better I feel like I can do anything (great to not be in pain all the time!!)

i was going to reply to everyone & get down all the persies that are floating around my head! But it's late... and i've been inspired by Bec & have just (retrospectively) started doing project 365, looks like heaps of fun! That'll be some "me" time.... but now it's late & I should go to bed!

Good news is that DH seems to be improving a bit. Annika had her shots today & seems ok. I've finally organised for Xander's repeat allergy testing (done annually) and have my fingers SO crossed that he will have grown out of at least the egg, plus get the all-clear for sesame. I suspect we'll still be stuck with treenuts tho.

Apes - I hear you on the GF. It's such a PITA isn't it. We're back seeing our paed on thurs & I wanna talk to him re solids. Given the intolerances/allergies/malabsorptions in our household I really want to do the right thing... if only I could work out what that is!

As for dummies, same here. She's always losing it and doesn't seem THAT into it which surprises me. I didn't use a dummy with DS so it's all new to me. She often sucks her fingers and in the last two days, her thumb. Reckon I'm gonna have 2 thumb-suckers on my hands lol. No signs of rolling.

Was also wondering re dustmite too. And especial thoughts out to all those in QLD, it's just horrific huh I've been stalking you QLDers on FB to see you're all ok.

wow looks like I'm inspiring people all over the place lol

Chuckie - Isaac is the same, he sleeps when he feels like sleeping. I'm getting better at noticing his tired signs, so I can usually tell when to rock or feed him to sleep. The night he stayed up until 11pm, he had slept until 10am that morning, that was after going straight back to sleep after his morning feed. The next day when he woke for his morning feed at 8am he started to drift back to sleep, so I tried to keep him awake gently by talking and smiling at him. He got all smiley, so I got him up for a play, and he did go to sleep a bit earlier that night.. but it was still 10pm! Last night I tried something different and put him in the sleepywrap just after 7, and he slept really well. I'm going to try that every night for a while, just to see if he'll get in the habit of sleeping at that time again.
Good on you for returning to study! Are you doing it by distance learning? I'm finding it hard to study every day, but lucky I have Tuesday afternoons baby-free, when mum comes over to look after Isaac. It's so rewarding though, especially when the majority of your conversations you have during the day are completely in funny sounding noises..

Belfie - yay! I was so happy to see you on 365, I always love your photos on facebook, and your captions under them always crack me up

Chuckie - yeh moving in the Rob, we will start looking when we get back from tassie the end of this month - CANT WAIT!!

Quick question - was everyone offered adult whooping cough vaccinations at their bubs immunisations?? they are doing that here and i said no at the 2 months one cos i chickened out... but now decided after watching it on the news that in 2010 6000 bubs got it as apposed the 2009 was 1000 so thats really bad especially this yr as the kids will be back in childcare.. anyone else getting it...???

haha i so was gonna do that project 365 too!! wat a fabulous idea lol but i take so many photos now its ridiculous hahaha
