Arte, don't let him know if you do it. I know when my cousin was a toddler he was a dreadful sleeper at night and my Aunt took him to the Dr and he prescribed a mild sedative for him and it worked a treat. If it were happening all the time I'd say give the phenergan a try - normally I'd never recommend that but this is just getting to the point where it is ridiculous and you need as much sleep as you can. The only other alternative is put him in front of the TV as soon as he wakes and then just go back to bed. I had a bit of a google and came across a fair bit of info about how a lack of melatonin can bugger up sleep. Maybe that is something to look into?

Hey MP! Good luck for Monday! Have you found a nanny for the boys yet?

Cally that is great to hear she is sleeping better. How are things at work for you?

Yesterday we got a new dining table!! On Tuesday DH went to Wagga to see the orthopedic surgeon and had a bit of time to kill so he wandered around the shops and one was having a moving sale - they sell all that home decorating stuff and a bit of furniture and there was a solid timber 7 piece dining suite marked down to $1200 from $2200 so he rang me and we ummed and ahhhed for a bit and in the end I said OK, whatever you decide I'm happy with and not long after he texts me saying we got it for $1150! so it got delivered yesterday and I had to go in and pick it up. Its so nice BIG LOL. It's 6 foot and our last one was only about 5ft and it's a bit wider too. The one we replaced we'd brought 13 years ago for $300 second hand at a garage sale and even then it was a relic from the 70's LOL. It was at the point where I didn't even want people to come for dinner because they would see how bad the chairs were.

And DH goes in to have both knees fixed on the 3rd of June. Its going to cost a packet - PHI will cover a fair percentage but they cover bugger all of the actual surgery itself so we will be about $2500 out of pocket. But if he went public he'd be on the waiting list for well over 2 years for knee surgery so it will be worth it. Plus we can claim the money on his tax refund too.

Trill- your new table sounds lovely. so jealous! we really need some new furniture around here but it might have to wait a few years.

arte- i really just don't know what to suggest. is there any chance you can take him to the gp today and explain what is going on? i think a dr needs to take a look at him and hear your story. they may be able to suggest some strategies or point you in the right direction.

    hey everyone,

I have been trying to read and keep up.

Arte have you taken him to a GP? Like Trill suggested I was going to ask about a mild sedative?

Trill the new table sounds awesome. How long will recovery take for your DH? We keep tossing up the idea of getting rid of PHI but we just can't do it.

G we got L some Kmart flannies too lol.

I can't remember much else so a big hello to everyone.

Who has night TT? This week we have stopped all nappies for L, we have had no accidents and yesterday after 3 days of holding in a poo he finally went to the toilet. Not much else happening here, Z has self weaned. I am really proud to have fed her for so long but also a little sad, I was only a few months shy of my 2 year goal.

Arte, this might sound simplistic, but have you tried bribery/reward charts? By this age they are able to make a decision about what they do when they wake up. We did this a few months ago with Missy E, explained that if she wakes up and it's still dark, she can shut her eyes and cuddle her bunny and think about something nice and go back to sleep again. We didn't need the next step - reward chart/bribery - but by this age that could be effective too. Pick something he really wants and reward reward reward for each night he doesn't get up/call out/cry/whatever. Also ask him (in the daytime) what's happening physically when he wakes up. Is he hot? cold? thirsty? itchy? need to pee? Is he comfy in bed? Does something hurt? What can he hear? Trill may be onto something with the melatonin too. Do you keep the whole house really dark at night? It's the switch between daylight to total darkness that flicks the melatonin switch, so getting outside/under bright lights in the afternoon is important, followed by lowered lights before bedtime then total darkness (I've started using an eye mask again to sort out my sleep issues, I can't believe what a difference it makes to the quality of my sleep). You can get kids eye masks so that might be something you could try, like a novelty sleep-helper. If he has a nightlight, you could try giving him a torch to keep next to his pillow, or switch the nightlight off once he's asleep.

Oz that is a sterling effort on Bfing Z A has been night trained for ages which is awesome. But a PITA now it's cold and he walks right past the toilet in the middle of the night to come and get me out of bed to help him LOL. It is only day surgery and he will be able to walk out of the hospital. The op has come a long way from the days when you were left with a 5 inch scar on your knee and on crutches for weeks. His Dr told him he could go back to work the next day if he wanted to, but he has 30 sick days accumulated so he is taking a week off work just so he has more time at home without using his holidays to get some stuff done around the house.

G, we've been wanting a new table for years but just never had the money. We don't really have the money now either LOL but it was too good a deal to pass up.

    hi girls!

well, now that the full moon is passing overhead i feel better again lol! still no AF though, so i guess the PMS monster will have to wait another day lol.

Trill: WTG on the table purchase. that is a HUGE saving. but have to laugh as a table that big just wouldnt fit in our house hahahahaha! urgh, victorian terraces are small lol).

also, it's interesting about the knee op. DH really really needs to get his knee done again (he had a recon done almost 20 years ago and has the big scar et al).

MD: nah the kitchen isn't done yet. we have a working sink and stove etc, but are waiting on the benchtops and splashbacks. we are getting brushed stainless steel and it is a PITA to get it fitted to a "quirky" old house lol.

Oz: oh wow, you did so well with the BF! Leila weaned herself so much earlier than i thought (15 months). it was really weird....but then i got to rip out all my nice bras again lol.

G: oh man, nah, totally normal for L to run around doing kid stuff like that. well, at least i hope so as Leila is doing it too lol.

AFM: all ok here. Marta had her 6 month vax (yeah, a bit behind lol). but she didnt cope too well with it. and for the last few days has had ongoing temps. she is really out of sorts and we are not allowed to touch her leg
Leila is all good. she had a pretty bad skin breakout the other week but turns out that she was given some watermelon at kindy (by her friend and watermelon pusher lol). i was amazed at how it affected her, from her skin, to her behaviour. so freaky.
we have been slack as in organising our family holiday. we are desperate for one, but the irony is that we are too tired to organise one. i just wish someone could come to my house with a planned holiday organised and could tell me when and where i need to be lol.

oz- well done on the bfing!!! J self weaned at 20 months so i was short of my 2 year goal too, but i have to admit i was ready for him to stop by then anyway.

i feel so behind now on the TT front. L still will not poo on the toilet and i really feel that enough is enough. how do you night TT them? do you just stop putting nappies on them or do you work up to it? what should i do?

We are not night trained here either G. Lu sleeps so heavily that she just doesn't wake up to pee. I tried just going cold turkey and had wet sheets every day bar one for a week so figured she wasn't ready. I tried the taking her to the toilet at 10-11 pm thing to no avail, in fact it just made her start waking in the night. Fail. So i'm just leaving it for a bit. My cousins' DD night trained close to 4, but was day trained at 18 months. I dunno. Maybe it will be easier when it's warm? I kind of feel like we missed the boat a bit. I think L is so used to the security of the nappy that she doesn't wake up. This time, i am going to try and night train S earlier. I kind of feel like i have created a problem by not encouraging it earlier, but i dunno. S doesn't wear a nappy at all for her day naps, just at night. And we haven't had an accident yet.

Oz- Good work on the BF'ing. Is she eating toothpaste instead?

Cass- That's no good about about Marta. Hope she picks up soon.

Score on the Table Trill. I laughed at your car packing. Was poor A left on the roof?!

Lu is loving kinder. She is really loving playing with other kids, i am so glad we put her in, it's been the best thing (for her and i! ). I am amazed how much learn, especially from other kids. She is interacting with her sister much better as a result. Don't get me wrong, they still fight, but they are playing much better than before.

Totally agree on preschool being good for them JM. I've noticed that since he's been going that he seems so much more like a 4yo than a 3yo kwim? He's grown up a lot. As for car tetris, all I can say is thank god for a 60-40 split fold seat LOL. I put him on the single seat and folded the double one down.

Don't worry too much about the night training. Some kids aren't night trained for ages. I've been incredibly lucky that all of mine night trained really easily and none of them were bed wetters.

No night training here. I suspect that it just gets wet in the mornings as she wakes up, but not sure. She has always seen the nappy as a bit of a security thing and when she was first toilet trained we used to have some massive tantrums when I tried to take the night time off. I'm not willing to deal with the wet sheets a) at this time of the year and b) when 5 out of 7 mornings we are getting off to work. So we might not worry until summer time. We've got enough nappies in the wardrobe to last us until then anyway!!

Cass - hope Marta picks up soon. Poor little thing, lucky you put it off until now.

When we ask K why she wakes in the middle of the night the usual answer is she's lonely. And apparently stuffed animals/dolls do not cut it.

We're doing the bribe in the morning for a dry nappy, it works most of the time and we could probably go without the pullups, but it's just as easy to have them on as not. When they're dry they'll be dry. At nighttime I think it really is about physiological maturity and not behaviour so much, kwim?

Trill your new dining table sounds lovely! We've got an old op-shop job one as well, it's daggy but I love it because it has character. One of these days I'm going to give it a good working over with a furniture restoration product.

Ginger we nearly went mad getting E to poo on the toilet, it's really only a very recent thing. I can't even remember what it was that got us around that corner. Maybe try a sticker chart with a really desirable reward after 5 x successes. It really only took doing it 2 or 3 times and E realised it wasn't all that bad.

hmm we never really had poo issues on the toilet. but i *think* that might have to do with Ls penchant for fart jokes. DH is proud.

Cally: thanks babe Marta seems much more herself now, finally! she is still a bit clingy and crabby, but her wheezing and snot monsterness is well under control

MD: oh and forgot to say that the hugg thingo i won is actually called "hugg-a-planet"...yep, i am good with names

haha no MD i totally embarrassed myself as the earth gives birth to the moon (it's tucked inside!)

ok, jut read through some of your blog...., sorry that it has been ages since i went in there. i font know something in the last three months has just been chaotic. cant quite put my finger on it, but i *think* it has to do with getting used to a new life without Oma in it IYKWIM but i am still out balance time/concentration wise....excuses i know, as Oprah would say 'time is now'...i think i need to really focus on her definition of forgiveness to move onto this new phase.

Cass just read your ETA - soooo relate my darling, esp re the time/balance/focus thing. Something pretty major has happened in your emotional landscape, I don't think that's something that you can just snap back to normal from straightaway. Be kind to yourself. I'm slowly coming to realise that we (I) don't have to be everywhere and do everything. I really don't. I'm not talking about when you're going through a tough patch (like just after your baby's born or when you're having cancer treatment or when you're grieving for someone) but all the time!!! We have so many culturally-derived expectations about what 'successful' looks like, what we need to do and enjoy and even to know about in order to be 'across' everything that we deem to be necessary to be happy. That's not what it's all about, it's just another source of pressure to put on ourselves. What we really need to do is slow down and be connected to whatever it is that's significant in that moment. kwim?

oh man, that is exactly how i have been feeling of late MD! just a big eye opener for me of what and how life can be lived IYKWIM. DH is finding it really confronting though (he is so 'success' and 'output' driven that taking time to smell the roses is just too scary for him...but that's a whole other saga lol).
