Its so good isnt it Smithy - as its nice to know that they are more comfortable in there little lives - its hard seeing them in pain.
Makes both our lives and hers a little more comfortable (she just needs to learn that whilst the world is an amazing place the sooner she sleeps the better she will feel)
Good to hear about Charlie been more comfy with the poops, I read that just after you posted it and was coming on to find you and tell you about it so glad its working

Hi girls, been a while since I posted again, so thought time for an update! I have th best intentions of getting here, but it just does not happen. Even with facebook, I pop on and off and don't have time to sit and chat these days, so different to what life used to be like!

We had a Child and Youth Health check up yesterday. Luka is doing really well and is now 4560grams and 54cms long. I am surprised at how he is thriving considering how sick he has been. He has really body blocked/snotty/runny nose. Now he has developed a cough as well. We took him to the gp and she was really worried about his breathing, as he was working really hard. They sent us to Monash and he got a good going over, a chest xray and it all come back clear. The doctor is thinking he has an allergy, but there is nothing they can do for him at this age. We just need to continue with the fess and aspirator. I think it sounds like it has moved down to his chest now, he has a really loose kind of cough. I feel so sorry for him. But even though it is making feeding etc hard, he seems happy enough. He watches us all the time and looks for us if someone else is holding him or he hears one of our voices. He loves tummy time and moves his head around and pushing himself with his legs. So cute.

My health is finally a lot better and I feel really good. We are going really well now actually. Having a few dramas with a very boisterous 2 year old, but I think it is just an age thing! Hopefully she gets over this phase soon!

Smithy - How are you?

Colestar - Glad things are looking up with Jayde ... makes our life so much better when we know the bubs are doing well!

Vin - How are things going? How has V adjust to the sling? We are having mixed reactions as well, sometimes Luka is more than happy to go in and sleeps straight away. Other times not so happy and I feel like I am hurting him. Maybe it is me and how I put him in I am thinking?

to everyone else. It has been a bit quiet in here, we must all be busy new mums! I definately know the feeling!

Oh one thing about the health nurse yesterday, she told us to cut back Luka's feeds. He had two 140ml bottles yesterday, normally he takes between 90-120mls (so it averages out). She said he has put over double the amount of weight he should have in two weeks and should only be taking 120mls per feed. I am not worried by what she said, because if I have learnt anything from having babies before .. they kind of take what they need. Whilst one feed might be lighter they will probably make up for it next feed. I guess my point is to trust your instincts. You seem to get told so many different stories as a new mum and I know when it is your first time you don't have a lot of confidence in yourself to trust your own instincts. There is my mini vent

Kaz - Vaeda is starting to get better with the sling now, I pop her in, do a couple laps around the house and she falls asleep. I have tried feeding her in the sling but still learning! If I put her in her cot she doesn't sleep, I have to have her near me all day or she cracks it. Yesterday I picked her up and she threw up all over me and all over the sling! Was devastating having to wash it, maybe I need a second one for laundry day.

Also yesterday she did a massive poo and it leaked out the back of her nappy and went all over her back, and me too. So lots of laundry yesterday!!

Vaeda's 6 week check up tomorrow!! She has a burst blood vessel in her eye so I'm eager to get that looked at.

hello, just joined this thread, my little boy was born on the 17th of jan...
just wondering what your babies are doing in the way of sleep? mine has been refusing the breast during the day for the past 3 weeks, it has been so frustrating and very tempting to put him on formula, but when i give him a bottle he only drinks 60ml, which to me isn't enough and i would be making up bottles every two hours to satisfy him, if u know what i mean.... so i have persevered with the breast feeding, today has been better although maybe he is on a 6 week growth spurt, as he has fed more regular.....

during the night he feeds every 3 to 4 hours, but sometimes i am lucky to get 5 hours, and once i even got 8!!!!! had very sore boobs though and i was awake wondering when he would wake up, couldn't sleep.

i have absolutely no pattern/routine to speak of during the day or evening, its just pot luck if i can get him to sleep, is this normal??? my first born never slept a wink (honestly, she was a shocker) so i don't have much to compare him to, compared to her he is an absolute angel, but still, he isn't one of those babies that magically falls asleep without help (although in the middle of the night he usually does)... today at mothers group some of the babies (older than him a by a couple of months) just fell asleep in their prams while they were sitting still, i couldn't believe it... my boy needs a bit of rocking and help... also another mum who has a little girl the same age as my boy (6 weeks) puts her down awake and she just falls asleep in her cot, she couldn't believe that i rock/help my boy, but if i didn't he would lie awake for an hour (i tried it, thats what happened) and end up over tired etc....

does anyone else have a baby that falls asleep magically by themselves? is my baby abnormal for being a bit erratic and having no pattern etc? he sometimes is so grumpy, but i think he often has a tummy ache, as then he does a massive explosive pooh that goes everywhere and he often seems better after that.

sorry completely long winded, i just thought i'd know what i was doing with the second one and i find that i don't!! well at night its a piece of cake i just feed him and put him back down, but during the day i often don't know what he wants, especially with the breast refusal, he is crying cos he's hungry but then won't feed.... seems to be sorting itself out now though. oh he also had thrush and still does, for 3 weeks in his mouth, nothing has gotten rid of it and i have given up... its not too bad, but still curious as to whether its affecting his feeding/breast refusal during the day. at night he feeds well.

we are off on holiday to qld on tuesday, wish me luck!

ahhh vintrar I hear you on the explosion poo! Elly is verrrry good at those! Also had a difference yesterday, had a Niagra Falls. Just put on a fresh nappy after a wet one, and within minutes of going back to loungeroom and sitting on the couch, she pee'd thru nappy, pilcher, onto my jeans and ran off to the couch and puddled on the floor! I wasn't exactly slow jumping up either, I don't know where she stores it all!

Poor thing on the burst blood vessel though, I worry sometimes when Elly cries hysterically that she'll do something like that, she can get so worked up in such a short time. But she can calm down just as quickly too, it's wonderful when you pick em up and the crying just stops!

Hey Emma! Sounds pretty normal to me, some babies are easy but most need to learn how to self-settle and I think your bub is probably still too young to be learning that. First timer here, but the midwives at my birthing class and hospital told me this was the case, and there are dozens of books and websites about settling babies so obviously there are plenty of other mums in the same boat.

My bubs self settles after a feed during 10pm - 6am 90% of the time. My pattern is I feed her, burp her, change her, wrap her, feed her some more, burp again then straight into her cot. She will either go straight to sleep or she might fuss for 5 minutes first. She usually goes 3-4 hours between feeds. I think wrapping her halfway through is helpful because when I put her down afterwards she's still cosy, but if I wrap her afterwards all the movement teamed with the temperture change wakes her up from her post feed daze.

During the day it's a whole different game, she will not sleep in her cot at all and seems hungry all the time and the only way I can get her to sleep is to hold her constantly. It's very hard to get anything done but I just count my blessings that it's hard during the day instead of night! Also hope she always loves cuddles this much! I figure she'll be awake more during the day soon for playtime so it won't matter then anyway. As per my previous post, my sling/wrap has been very helpful!

Hi Ladies

Emma - Ours is a sleep fighter and barely has a patten she is getting there but is still not in any sort of order - she generally falls asleep during the night like Vin said between 10-12 it takes a little bit of effort but I always change her before I put her to sleep and give bottle (not only for her reflux but so that I am not waking her)

During the day though she is a cat napper sleeping probably 1 hour blocks here and there - IF I am lucky. Like Vins lil Vaeda, Jayde refuses to sleep in her cot during the day and would much prefer to be cuddled to sleep and if she is really out she will sleep in the pram BUT not in her room in the cot.

I wrap Jayde once before begining to feed Jayde and when she is asleep and I go to put her down I wrap her like I use to in the hospital (this is a new thing cause we were wondering why it took us so long to get her to sleep and we have discovered this could be an answer) she stays asleep longer and never really wakes up again.

Kaz - Sorry to hear about little Luka like you said to me its hard when they are so little there is nothing we can do to ease their discomfort (and pain) hopefully they can discover what it is (if its an allergy) and help the lil man out

Hope I am not to late to join this group, my beautiful son, Max William was born on the 21.1.10, he was 8 days over due and eventually decided to come on his own, even though we were booked in for an induction that same day!

My labour was pretty textbook apparently, 10 hours of 'true labour', delivered naturally, used gas but no other drugs. I almost wore holes in the floor with the pacing I needed to do during the contractions. I was so amazed once it was over, I just could not believe that we had 'done' it!!!

For me the labour has seemed like the easy bit as things went a bit downhill after that. Max didn't suck, so breastfeeding got off to a very slow start, and had to be fed formula whilst we worked out how to teach him to suck. By about day 4 he got the hang of it, but my milk had not come in, so he wasn't getting much and we had to top him up with formula.

5 days after we came home from the hospital I developed a high temp and fever, sweating, pain in the abdo, tingly all over. We rang the Obgyn who readmitted me to the maternity ward, apparently I had a rare sepsis infection. I was in hospital for 4 days on an IV drip. Thankfully Max was able to stay in hospital with me so we could continue trying to breastfeed.

When I got out of hospital the second time, Max had developed a staph infection so he was put on antibotics. Just as things were looking good, I started having pain going to the loo for #2s (sorry to much info??) and couldn't sit down for hours after going. So back to the Drs we went where they diagnosed a Perianal fissure (tear in the anus). Great!!!

To top it all off, my dear husband went motorbike riding that weekend and broke his arm. So picking up and bathing Max is a bit difficult.

Thankfully I think we are finally all on the road to recovery, I hired a lactation consultant who helped us sort out breastfeeding (we've had no formula or top up feeds for 1 week now!), my health is good (except for the fissue thing), Max's heath is great and hubby is doing the best he can with one arm in plaster.

So hopefully that excuses my lateness for joining this group

Our lactation consultant suggested taking Max to a Chiropractor - Do any of you have thoughts on babies and Chiro treatment - Croc or not?

Not sure about chiros but my BIL is an osteopath, apparently they can reduce colic in some babies by treating underlining causes. They are very gentle, it's not like the neck cracking they do on adults. My BIL said the occasional checkup is worthwhile, but especially if bubs is regularly unsettled.

In other news, Vaeda has slept 5-6 hour blocks for the last three nights! We are hoping this continues. Unfortunately I still didn't get any extra sleep, I guess I've been programed to wake up every two hours, and then it takes ages to get back to sleep.

Had a quite a few tired days here, it was confirmed Chloe has reflux and we started her on Mylanta, two days later it was only getting worse, she was up all night screaming for 2 days in a row and started perking stomach acid so next day started her on Zantac. In the meantime she got the virus that my niece shared with all of us so she had on top of it a blocked nose, nasty cough, red throat and very red ears (dr was shocked at how red for so young), and last night developed a temp of 40 so ears got infected and is now on antibiotics. Got a cranky Amelia with the same virus to, and guaranteed she will get an ear infection as well, so it may be off to the ENT specialist for her. A photographer friend came out to do pics of the girls but it was raining so we are going to do a reshoot sometime next week.

Cole - glad things are getting better

Kazaraz - sorry bubs has been sick, it sucks, dr thinks DD1 has allergies to, she gets alot of colds and ends up with ear infections so it may be off to an ENT soon. I hear ya on the 2rd old, Amelia will be 2 in April and is such a handful at the moment. I have the same opinion on the amounts babies drink, they will have what they want and good luck stopping them. Amelia was drinking up to 200mls each feed by this stage when she had a bottle and I was told off for giving it to her but if she didnt get what she wanted all hell broke loose. To me babies dont know the difference between being bf and ff and I was taught that all babies have part of the brain telling them how much to drink and when you bf you dont know what they take, so you should let ff babies have what they want to. My sisters daughter was very unsettled and I kept telling her to let her finish when she wants not when the bottle was empty of her 'quota', eventually she listened and it made a huuugee difference.

Emma - welcome, your probably right with the bottle thing, it probably wont make much of a difference changing over. As for patterns, if you have a bub with one at this age you are very lucky, I dont expect one to start developing till at least 3 months and even then its more of a sleep, eat, play pattern with a rough timeframe. I didnt worry about enforcing one a little more until 6 months. If you have a bub who falls asleep by themselves you are even luckier lol. I wouldnt use it as an indication though of the coming months, those mums could end up with shocking sleepers, you just cant tell. The thrush may make bubs annoyed at feeds but shouldnt stop them feeding, they will take what they want whenever, were you treating both you and bubs for it, with a gel or drops? It should really have cleared up faster though, is the white stuff in the mouth present before a feed, cause after is sometimes just the milk or something like that on the tongue. I hope the weather clears up here for your holiday, where you off to in Qld?

Vintrar - both mine have been the same with sleeping during the day, they prefer to be out with the action, I did find as Amelia got older that I have to start putting her away for her sleeps to get a proper routine happening.
