holy crap, i gave bubs 90mls of formula last night out as he was being so fussy at the breast and i couldn't get him to feed, that was at 8pm and i didn't want to put him to bed without a feed...
HE SLEPT UNTIL 4 AM !!!!!
couldn't believe it.... it was probably just a fluke, will find out soon enough, i've just fed him but plan on topping him up after his bath.... fingers crossed!

    Nice Emma!

I was just wondering what amount other bottle fed babies were drinking. Chloe is exclusively bf but I give her a couple of bottles of EBM a week, she usually drinks about 170/180mls? Amelia drank a heap for her age to but that was at 3mths, so I dont know what the usual amounts are for now.

    hello....
we are going to finish up breast feeding and go with formula, it just isn't working out and he is refusing feeds and going hungry, i am disappointed but have been so stressed out about it that i just feel i need to make the decision and do it, and we will all be so much better off once its done.

he drinks about 120ml of formula, that is the most he has ever taken... drinks about the same if it was expressed breast milk... my daughter never drank a great amount, so perhaps he is the same... i think on the formula tin it says 150ml up to 2 months of age, so he is pretty close to what they state, although he doesn't go four hours between feeds during the day, its more like 3 hours.

we are off to qld tomorrow so i am in a bit of a pickle packing bottles and not really knowing what the hell i am doing, as i am so out of practice in bottle feeding out of the house etc. oh well hopefully there are places to get boiled water and all that, i feel so out of my depth here! i am taking some EBM in a bottle for the plane, and hopefully will do the same on the way back, as i am going to keep expressing every now and then until my milk dries up, so will hopefully have a bottle of EBM for on the way home...

hopefully things are easier and he is more settled during the day now that i have made the decision to bottle feed. i wish things could have been different but i need to stop beating myself up over it.

good question hun id lke to know the same thing from some other formula fed mummys,my charlie was on the 120mls of formula but seemed it wasnt enough last week so ive put her bottles up to the next step and its now 180mls,most of the time she wont drink the hole thing maybe leaves about 20-30mls..shes a real piggy i tell ya lol..
i feel bad sometimes though cause my silly baby nurse always says "oh no terrarne she should only be having about 80mls for her age" YEH RITE GOOD LUK TRYING THAT WITH CHARLIE PMSL SHED CHEW OFF MY ARM .

Emma - definately do not beat yourself up over going to bottle. I did with DD1 and at the end of the day, you need to do what works. It is hard enough having a new baby, without it being a difficult road because they might not be getting what they need from you.

To everyone who wants to know what bubs are taking in regards to formula - we are up to 140ml bottles and Luka normally will finish one off. Sometimes it is 90-120, but if he does that he will make up for it with full bottles the next day. He normally goes 3-4 hours between feeds, or longer after a bath! Last night he was sooooooo unsettled, not much sleep from 6.30 to midnight and I was at my wits end. He wanted to be held and seemed to be in pain. I burped him, changed him, cuddled him .. nothing worked. In the end my dh and I decided to give him panadol and that helped. He went to bed at midnight and slept until 7am! Could not believe it. Today he has been so much more settled. THank god. Hate the days when you can't even put them down in the cot or rocker.

to everyone and I hope you are all well. Just a quickie for me today, but will be back.

    Re: Babies born~January 16th-31st 2010 #1

I wrote a big long post and then lost it

Vaeda took a bottle last night, after much fighting. We want her to get comfortable with the bottle so she can have EBM in daycare. We just gave her 50ml and she finished it in 2 minutes. I think we will need bigger bottles! How long does a bottlefeed usually take?

We have dropped our midnight feed!! Definite pattern forming now, Vaes feeds around 9:30pm, then around 2:30pm, then around 6am, so only getting up once in the middle of the night. I would love to go back to sleep after the 6am feed but she has decided that's morning. Oh well I think I've got it pretty good.

Poor Kaz! I haven't had to deal with an upset baby yet, not sure I will be able to deal very well.

    Hi All

Kaz- Thanks for the amounts I have no idea what I should and shouldnt be feeding Jayde - the more I give especially at night the more she sleeps so we have been giving about 150 mls and its working (otherwise she becomes restless)

Smithy - I hate the nights from hell - there must be something in the air (the moon perhaps) Jayde was really unsettled last night took me dancing to the radio at 12 am to get her to finally crash out (I find trying to get her to sleep during the day helps put her to bed easily at night)
Hopefully Charlie stays alseep for a little while to give you some you time

Jayde has taken to rolling on her side to sleep (I still wrap her otherwise she flings her arms about and wakes herself up) I wake up and find her sleeping on the side such a restless sleeper

Cole - We have always given a bigger bottle later in the night in hope that it would mean the baby would sleep through. Luka is not really at that stage yet, but hopefully soon! The nurse told us he should only be taking 120mls at the moment, but good luck holding him back. If they want it give it to them I say.

Vin - It does not take long for a bottle to get drank by my boy, he is a guts! You would think that the world is ending when we are ready for a feed and he will attempt to get anything in his mouth he can, fingers, bib, fist ... normally I like to give him a break halfway to burp him, but he normally cracks it. So I reckon he downs a bottle in 5 mins maybe a bit more!

Smithy - Good luck with panadol and Charlie, always find it scary giving it the first time. It is not like we give it all of the time, but when you are at your wits end and have tried everything and they still seem in pain ... I think there is nothing wrong with it!

My parents are visiting and we are going for a drive today. I am looking forward to it, but not so much driving by myself with Luka. So far he has shown signs of LOVING the car. I hope that changes as we are going to Mt Gambier in a few weeks which is a 6 hour drive for us! When we had 1 or even 2 kids it was ok, we could get in the back with them to feed or settle, but there is no room for us now! Fingers crossed it goes ok, today might be a bit of an insight!

    Hey guys.

Emma1979 - Don't beat yourself up hun. You've got to do whats best for you both. The important thing is that bubs gets fed and you're not stressing.

Smithy - I hope you don't mind, I looked at your gallery. Charlie is such a cutie!

Sorry I've not been around - we're in the process of getting ready to move (again! so over it lol) but this time for good. We're moving to Brisbane mid next month, so been busy packing and organising everything.
I don't really remember what sleep is, between Munchkin and little Nao, they keep me on my toes!

How great that Max shares a birthday with some others here. How precious!

Vintrar - Max is on a similar feeding pattern as Vaeda, 9ish, 2ish, 6ish. He has one 5 hour sleep stint and then a 4 hour! Its nice getting a few hours sleep in a row hey! Luckily for me Max is happy to go back to sleep again after the 6am feed, so I sneak back to bed and get some more sleep

Emma1979, my girlfriend also just went to the bottle and whilst to begin with she was a bit down about it, her little buba has thrived since going on the bottle and once she got into the swing of it any disappointments have been quickly forgotten, especially when her little buba gives big smiles during the bottle feed. Happy mummy = happy buba. Well done for making the tough decision and have fun in QLD.

After chatting to a few people I took Max to the Chriopractor, he has been so easy to settle ever since, not sure if its just a coincidence or maybe there is something in it! The down side is they tell me its an intensive time and I need to have weekly appointments - sounds a bit much, but if he going to settle so well, then it might be worth it.

I've got my first mums group meeting tomorrow - bit nervous, how silly hey!
