Wow, what a week!! First of all, thank you for all the concern and support you gave me. I am happy to say that Sophie is all better and that we finally came home from hospital yesterday. It appears she just had a bad virus, which apparently has been going around young babies over the past few weeks. She ended up having a lumbar puncture (performed by a Resident student dr who had never done one on a baby before - VERY SCARY - but he did a fantastic job!!) I really didn't want her to have it done, but in the long run that was the only test that showed up what was wrong with her. I had never really considered how difficult treating babies must be for drs, etc. It took 5 goes before the dr in A & E could get the I.V. into her hand as the veins were so small (and after all that, it clotted and blocked so they had to take it out that night and do it again!!!!) Anyway, it has really made me appreciate the public health system and how desperately we need money spent on our hospitals.
Roxxie - everytime I had to walk past the Maternity waiting room at the RHH over these past few days I have thought of you sitting there waiting to be induced having your irregular contractions. My mum walked past a lady on Tuesday who was standing in the hallway, almost doubled over and in obvious pain. She stopped to ask is she was ok, and the lady vomitted everywhere. Mum went to get someone to help, and after a few minutes FINALLY found someone, who apparently complained more than she showed concern. Absolute shocking!! Hope Lacie is doing well!
I finally have time to catch up on some personals...
Cass - Sophie grunts, moans and squirms both when settling and waking. She also cries heaps more when hungry than DS did! Sophie is also awake most of the day (but fortunately sleeps nearly all night) except when she is being held (which she absolutely LOVES) or when in her carrier. Makes it very hard to get anything done. Regarding weight - Sophie was weighed by HCN last wed and had only put of 60g in 2 weeks. Then only 3 days later when she was weighed at the hospital, she was 400g heavier!! Think the HCN stuffed up somewhere!
Queen Bee - I haven't managed to lock myself out of anywhere yet, but my brain just seems so full of fog! I can't write a shopping list to save myself, let alone get around the supermarket and actually get everything I need!! Fortunately my mum is still here - she was supposed to go home on Sunday but due to our hospital stay, she has stayed to look after DS.
Deedles - Sophie was also using my boobs as dummies, which was driving me crazy as it meant she was getting too full and spilling after every feed, and then wanting to get back on the boob an hour later!!
Thrilled - what a crack up!! Sophie nearly always cries when she has a dirty nappy, so I never have to smell it for long!!
Shell1 - I was swaddling Sophie in a muslin wrap, and then have a woolen blanket and sheet on her cot, but she constantly wriggles out of the swaddle. So, I have bitten the bullet and put her into a sleeveless, fleecy sleeping bag that was DS's as I was worried she was getting too cold. I also always pull the 'mittens' over on her bonds growsuits - mainly to stop her scratching herself but also to keep her fingers warm.
M2W - I am dreading my mum going home on Saturday and having my first week with DH back at work and a toddler and a baby that doesn't settle. I too will have to get the the Baby bjorn back out for the afternoons when Sophie won't settle and DS starts getting cranky - which will probably be every afternoon. Is it sad to say that I think I am REALLY going to love my tues and thurs when DS is in care?
Feijoa Mum - thanks for your concern re: Sophie. I never want to have to go through it again but it could have been so much worse.
Jandals - hope Toby is better and that his tummy pains have eased up. I seriously thought Sophie just had wind/colic on friday but knew that having a temp wasn't normal. When DS was a bub someone told me to give him a tablespoon or two of cooled boiled water and then to 'cycle' his legs for a few minutes and within 10mins or so he would always do a poo!
Just bursting to tell my news.... I just spent over an hour on the phone with a girlfriend of mine who I haven't spoken to in ages. We had lost touch but after an hour on the phone it feels like we haven't been apart at all. Our eldest boys were born 6 weeks apart and after 5 years of ttc she's due on 6 August.
Shell it must be difficult for babies to wake up. It certainly takes lots of cute grunting. I keep telling Robert to just open his eyes. When he finally does he looks at me all bug-eyed like, oh wow what just happened, when did you get here....
Lou it's wonderful that your little girl is doing fine. I'm glad they were able to pin down what was wrong with her - I hate it when they can't find what is wrong. It must have been awful for you to watch her go through all those tests.
It's my DHs birthday tomorrow but he'll have to wait until he gets home for his present.... only 15 sleeps to go! Gosh, I miss him so much.
It is so quiet here at the moment, just me and Robert. My eldest is on camp until Saturday (gosh, QB & Thrilled hope i don't suffer too badly from sleep deprivation and forget to pick him up LOL!!) and my parents flew back to Sydney yesterday.
Since Robert's big sleep from 3 to 5 (after being awake all day) he's had a feed and nice long warm bath with me followed by a top-up feed then he just fell asleep, he's been out to it for 2 hours so far. When he wakes up I'll give him another feed and change then go to bed.... oh wouldn't it be nice for a lovely long 4 hour stint after his next feed ... yep, dream on mummy that ain't gonna happen!
Oh Lou that is so great you are all home happy and healthy. I can't imagine a lumbar puncture for a baby. You must have been so strong and I am glad that it went really well. It is so scary seeing your lil one so sick.
I also totally agree about needing to spend money on hospitals!!!
Also I totally understand about having your DS in care. I think I may go a bit crazy running around after DS1 and looking after Lennox if I had him home everyday.
Actually this afternoon DS1 tried to pick Lennox up out of the swing while I was on the loo and came out to find Lennox falling on the floor, SCARY! Now I am a bit worried that he will try to do it again. Maybe I need to bring him to the loo with me too lol!
Lennox is also a big grunter, especially when he is waking up and stretching those cute lil arms and legs.
Cass, yay on your DH getting home. You must be so excited! Hoping a 4 hour sleeping stint went your way.
Not quite a 4 hour sleep, but we did go 3 hours, then 2 & half, so that's okay too. Now I just have to wait for him to finish pooing (it's such a production! lol) so we can finish our feed and go back to bed!!
I went sling shopping today and was dismayed at the quality of slings and how overpriced they are. Does it strike anyone else as obsurd that they can charge anywhere from $60 to $100 for a couple of metres of material?!! I ended up at Spotlight and bought some lovely fabric to make my own. While I was there I also bought some fabric to make a sleeping bag for bubs.
Hmm, now to find the time to sew!
Oh, almost forgot - I mopped the kitchen and family room floor today! I also vacuumed the loungeroom floor. Tomorrow I might even clean the sinks in the bathroom and ensuite (yeah right!).
Very sleep deprived here! After Soph had a good night we have had some shockers...seems for every good night there is one or two bad ones. Fortunately, toddler was at kindy yesterday, so had a little sleep with Soph in middle of day (nearly 2 hours) - just like this morning with no-one here DH and toddler at beach, Soph doesn't want to sleep!!! Yesterday morning, I just put her in the baby bjorn and did the housework - I thought if she is going to be painful I might as well do something just as painful.
Sophie has a great first sleep (4-6 hours) but the problem is from 2am on. She is suffering badly from wind - i think after having a very big feed...so tonight I will try giving her infants friend at that feed and see if it helps.
We had 6 week check at Dr yesterday. Sophie is 5kg!! Born 2.9kg - so definitely putting on the weight!!

Deedles - Sohpie cluster feeds in the early evening - which I donit mind as long as it is only for a couple of hours. I find the infant friend works when she is really grizzly and windy. Soph has been really windy in the early hours of the morning the last few days - so up every 90mins with her...so 2nite I think I will give her Infants Friend when she wakes in the early morning and see if it helps her get a better sleep.
Deedles - my son has tried to pick Soph up out of the rocker 2! So when I go to the loo or out of eye shot i take the rocker 2 now!!!
QB - You poor thing having a grizzly baby for 12 hours during the day! It is times like these I use the baby bjorn as Soph and my son would always fall asleep in there on me (sure I couldn't take them out or they would wake) but at least they didn't get hysterical from being overtired. I have found days like this my toddler tests my out too - probably because he is not getting times of quality one on one attention when Soph is in her cot and out of sight. Jealously rears its head. Have you tried a sling??
Lou - Gr8 to here that Sophie is all better and out of hospital. I feel for you having to witness those horrible tests. When my son was little they failed at putting an IV in when he had a bacterial infection and I stopped them from trying again and breastfed him every 20-30mins instead. It was horrible, so I feel for you with such a tiny bubs!! I wonder if it was the same virus my Sophie had - she was sick for ten days (now just has a viral cough) but had massive temps when I took her to the hospital...fortunately they let me go as she obviously wasn't as sick as your bubs.
