Hello Supa!!! CONGRATULATIONS ON THE ARRIVAL OF YOUR PRINCESS!!!!. Did she have to stay awhile in hossy cause of the heart condition? or do bubbas with DS need a bit more intensive care in the beginning? how awesome is it that your DD1 is loving the new bubba! (any hints??!!!!!). i just :pray: that Leila copes alright with our new addition...

So glad the elective C/S was such a positive experience for you, and it sounds like they took good care of you all in hospy. Massive welldone on the BFing...I understand that it can be an extra challenge with babies who have DS so it's fabulous you've been able to get off to a good start with it :hug:. I bet T is thriving in her new role as big sister! Finding out about the downs/heart condition must've been a huge shock, I reread your post because I assumed she's now home with you but then I wondered if maybe she's still in the NICU? I know you have a community behind you who will be praying for DD's health, please know I'm sending love and support too. xxx

Cally - child care crisis: I've never had CC on Wednesdays, my FDC lady has always been full that day. Now that I'm back at work, I'm finding it harder to manage my fatigue, so I've decided to put E in the extra day CC (believe it or not it was a very difficult decision to make). So I need to find a place ASAP. I managed to sweettalk us a place at a local community CC centre but we visited it today and it just reminded me how much I *don't* want E in a centre (and this is one of the better ones hereabouts)... hence the "crisis"...but the FDC offerings are slim to non-existant (which is why I've never had the Wednesdays, even last year when I *really* needed them after chemo). They basically gave me the names of nearly every carer in a 3 suburb radius around here, most of them aren't available...stay tuned...
Which reminds me to feel sh*tty that no one has mentioned child care in all the electioneering...
SupaB!! it is so great to hear from you :hug: And Congrats on your baby girl! I bet she is just beautiful :) I hope the surgery she has to have goes smoothly and she recovers OK. Did you know any of this before she was born so you could prepare for it? I know you will be crazy busy, but try not to be a stranger OK? There might be times where you just need to vent and we'll be here for you if you do :hug:
MD, that's crappy about the CC situation. I really hope that something comes up for you soon :hug: I was wondering how work was going and if you were coping OK. So the fatigue has hit with a vengeance then?
Meant also to say LOL Arte no your Dr Seuss comments weren't a thread killer at all...our modem broke and it's taken this long to get it sorted out again. I find some of them long and tedious and pointless, but there are a few (and books of a similar ilk, eg Fox in Socks etc) that are better for the younger readers, save the others until primary school when they can read them for themselves (DD1 went mad for them briefly around 7-8).
Fatigue lurks ever present Trill. It only takes a little extra activity over a few days in succession to really wear me out. I feel pathetic to admit it, but it's a fine balance between doing incrementally more all the time to build up my tolerance/capacity for doing more vs not doing too much all at once and falling in a heap.
Don't feel pathetic to admit it :hug: it's not your fault and soon you will be able to handle it a lot better :)

wow, i never realised wednesdays were *the* day for CC. i guess cause it's less likely to be used for staff development days and public holidays lol. or is that just the cynic in me lol.
do you still have any fancy tinctures from the naturopath to help with the tiredness? i have been put on a 'regime' of iodine, DHA super oils etc etc. but man it costs a fortune...totally not sustainable for the long term me thinks.

AFM: well, we are having a rotten day. poor leila is really crook. not sure yet if it is gastro or a full on reaction to the 2 passionfruit she ate yesterday. since the pm yesterday she has been in agony in her belly and pooing through the eye of a needle (sorry the for the TMI LOL!). the poor wee poppet. i am changing her nappy about 4-5 times in the hour :o. she is refusing the gastrolyte, so have taken to syringing it down her throat. she is drinking water, but the moment anything hits her gut she's filling her nappy. i feel so bad for her as she gets a bit scared. but i have told her that she has bugs in her belly that she needs to poo out lol. she seems to understand that quite well and knows that the poo is a good thing itms...dont want her to get all freaked out about her bodily functions across the long term IYKWIM. i gave her some toast with vegemite this morning which she hammered, and was thinking rice with a few drops of soy sauce...what do you guys think? the poor girl i have NEVER seen her this sick. and me being paranoid, i have dettoled everything she is touching lol!
any advice on how to handle this would be lovingly taken on board...and also when/if to get worried...i'm guessing if she stops eating and is all lethargic then i should go to a GP?
So long as you can keep fluids up to her and she is having some wees, then unless she gets really dehydrated there isn't much a Dr can do really. If it goes for too long, I will get an immodium tablet, cut it in half and give it to them to help reduce the number of poos they do. Also be careful that her little bum doesn't get red raw. Whenever A has an outbreak like that his bum will have open sores it gets that bad. I'm convinced that when it happens to him it isn't an illness but something his gut has reacted to because he never seems sick, and the rest of us don't get it either.
Congrats SUPA!!!!!!!! i'd love to know your little one's name, as i've always loved your DD1's name :)
cass- oh no, perfect timing for you to go into labour....NOT!!!!! have you tried L on the electrolite icy-poles? they taste like salt but i can usually get L to eat them when need be.
md- wow, hope you can sort out the CC situation.
we went and saw Dora stageshow today and it was an abolute cracker! the boys loved it, especially when Diego made a guest appearance. L was screaming and jumping up and down. i had tears in my eyes from laughing so hard at J dancing. it was a great day :)
thanks girls for the info! i reckon you're on the money sherie...i dont think it is gastro. in fact my mummy instincts are fairly certain that it is the reaction to passionfruit. i think that her kiwi fruit intolerance is morphing...now it stands at watermelon, kiwi and probably passionfruit. i have booked in with the GP tomorrow for a referral to a specialist to see if there is a way to manage her intolerance. poor wee poppet. missing out on all the glorious fruits that she loves!

MD - I think Wed's are difficult because it's the double up day for those that do 3 days a week. Hope you get something sorted quickly! How many days a week are you working? Can you take a couple of shorter weeks for a little while until you are able to cope a bit better? Sorry, can't remember if you got back into the PS or not so still have your entitlements.
Cass - eye drops are actually much easier at school. She just lies down for me there (admittedly with her eyes closed and I have to force them open while she whinges) but at home we have to both hold her down and DH has to pin the arms down as well while she wiggles and screams! Not good about L, hope she feels better soon. Poor thing, no watermelon!

Cally re the eyedrops, here's the foolproof way to get them in: lie her down and tell her to shut her eyes. Put the drops in the inner corner of her eye and then have her scrunch her eyes/blink a few times before getting up. I find a lolly bribe at the end helps with compliance too ;).
Cass - poor L, sounds awful, hope she's on the mend soon. Missy E gets very nasssteh nappies with kiwi fruit, which is a pity because she loves it. I would *love* some potions from the naturopath, but I've been too poor to go recently. As well you know, it is not a cheap exercise. Will book myself in once I've got a few more paydays between me and the breadline.

well i just got asked to interview for a job for next year. i know in my heart of hearts that i can't, but gees i hate missed opportunities! it's full-time and J is not ready for full-time care.....and it would just put way too much pressure on our family time-wise......i'm spewing!!!!

Oz: Leila has mastered the art of some clothes (knickers, socks, shoes - not laces!, pants/skirts etc). tops are hit and miss depending on what style they are (ie loose fit she can do and singlets).
Leila is a constant 'whhhhyyyyyyyy?' LOL! she also asks 'what?' but we are not sure what she means as she applies it to a why context... :dunno:
MD: *snap* that's what we do with L and the eyedrops...'blink, blink, blink!!!! lol.
AFM: Doc was able to basically confirm it is a fructose intolerance...boo hoo! poor leila. she LOVES fruit! he told me that her reaction to kiwi is the one to avoid at all costs (at this stage she only needs to touch one as the trolley passes the fruit stand for her to have chronic runs and rash). but now passionfruit, watermelon and grapes are well off the list until we start trying small amounts over the coming years (although TBH i wanna avoid passionfruit with a passion...ohhh the pun...ishment: sorry guys lol). poor wee poppet is still beside herself and he told us that she will probably have the runs for another 2-3 days and he doesnt want to prescribe anything to stop it at this stage as she needs to rid it from her system asap. sooooo: now she is on a liquid only diet for 2 days, then mashed potato for a day then we ring him up and update to see where she's at. the dehydration is the problem as she hates the gastrolyte (so catch22 is to have it mixed in with a small amount of pear juice). but gp reckons it the best way ATM. she has lost sooo much weight poor thing. was just UNDER 11kgs :o.
I thought that's what it would be Cass. I did a bit of googling last night and for some reason Kiwi is apparently OK to eat, so I wonder why that is the exception for her? Either way I hope it does resolve itself over the coming years :hug: Its not fun having a child with a food intolerance because you have to read the labels of EVERYTHING.
Oz, first Sept birthday is Patoot's H, on 28th, followed by Liv on 31st. Miss E can get em off but she can't really get em on by herself, she's fascinated with buttons but mostly can't do those either.
Ginger, that was me last year having a tantie over my dream job in my dream library being advertised at hte wrong time. But if the time's not right, it's just not worth the stress. I was reading about the impact of employment on family wellbeing today, the study pointed to a pretty clear link between getting the balance of hours the mother works right as one of the big indicators of getting the positive benefits of work without getting the negative impacts of work. So as painful as it is right now, happiness comes from getting the balance right, not what job you're doing, kwim?
Gosh Cass I have never heard of fructose intolerance, poor little mite, hope her little tum/bum gets better asap. Perhaps some well timed probiotics could help her gut to heal?
Clare, that is bad news about L's fructose intolerance. Is it something that she might grow out of?
Ginger, the concert sounds cool. W has just started watching Diego in the last couple of weeks and he is loving it. Bummer about the job. Will you interview anyway? Perhaps if they see how fantastic you are they might consider a job share situation? Why is Cass's baby S? Do you know something I don't? I am hanging to hear the name!

Oz, W dresses himself, but being the king of procrastination sometimes I do it in the interest of actually getting out of the house! He did his socks for a while, but can't possibly do them now so I have to do them ("but they are twisted, THEY ARE TWISTED" every.single.time)

md- thanks for giving me reassurance :) i know you're right, and i absolutely hate being busy more than anything else in the world. i also know that i wouldn't cope with J being in CC full-time......so i just have to let this one go and see what comes up in 3 years or so. maybe it might send them a positive message that i take the job really seriousley and won't take it on if i can't give it 100%? ....and maybe they might think of me again if something comes up in a couple of years. idk...
arte- diego is huge in this household. the boys can't get enough of him.

G: i read your FB status on the Dora show and had a giggle....ahhh yes, how our lives are changing with kids lol! i can't believe that i get excited when i see yo gabba gabba coming to town these days... :rolleyes: lol!
Arte: leila does the whole...'the heels are not on my feeeeeetttttt!!!' (cause they are sized 3-5 years so a wee bit big lol).
as for Leila's intolerance, yeah we are going to go on a management program where we eliminate for a short term and then slowly re-introduce. apparently it's about building up the stamina again! (she used to be fine with all fruit...even kiwi!).
Sherie: apparently Kiwi fruit is the only fruit that causes anaphylaxis. all the others can cause severe reactions in terms of rashes, runs etc etc. but kiwi has the potential for a full blown peanut-like reaction. He said that Leila needs to be careful with that one because going by her reaction to just touching it (rash, swelling, runs for a day or two) then eating it could be too risky itms.
MD: i had only heard of fructose intolerance through stuff i read about how kids are developing allergies to apples...and promptly rolled my eyes lol! ahhhh coming to bite me in the bum lol! it's such a frustration as no one in our family has it or really any allergies to speak of, especially not food allergies! but good to know as i will have to research what to do with this bubba and breastfeeding implications....
just wanted to say big thanks to you guys for the advice and shoulders to complain on lol! DD is feeling much better now on her 'liquid only' diet...although she is not impressed lol. it was scary seeing her so pale and weak and now super skinny! DH is chafing at the bit to get some good ol' olive oil drenched pasta into her lol.

I'm also taking your kiwifruit info as a cautionary tale and will be speakign with DH shortly so he doesn't slip it into her lunchbox. On the positive side, it sounds like a situation that can be remedied overtime so it's not like melon will never pass her lips again, kwim?
Ginger, when the time is ready you will be able to put yourself "out there" again, and any org'n worth its salt will see your value and want you. If they don't see it, they ain't worth it.
Arte, how is the study coming along? I have never seen Dora (except a Christmas DVD) let alone Diego but they are *huge* with the under 5s.
Well I had a little bit of a shock yesterday when I realised it's Missy E's birthday in only 3 weeks...needless to say her birthday party plans are being radically scaled back. We leave on a flying family wedding trip only a few days later, it's father's day (and my birthday) the week before, I fear it could be too much all at once for this rest-lovin chicken.
MD, the study isn't really going at all. By the time I get my disasters into bed I am usually to tired to do anything but re-read the same sentence. DH has been taking them out for a few hours on free weekends so I can get some done, but I have a 10% quiz on Friday and I still have a couple of chapters I haven't even touched on yet. I suspect it was a bad idea to bother attempting it.
Cass, glad someone else has a mega problem with socks. Hope L is feeling better.
It is 10.30pm and Amelia wouldn't resettle and now she is wide awake so it looks like I am going to be up until 1-2am. Far out, I am so sick of this. I have passed her over to DH because I don't even want to look at her atm.

Cute, Ginger! Although I must admit Missy E watches faaaaar more telly than H ever did at this age (at home and at FDC too), and she really doesn't understand that what's on the telly isn't real. I caught H loading the Labyrinth DVD into the player the other morning...I cannot imagine what Missy E would've thought of that. She's fixed on the Mike Myers cat in the hat DVD, but the only part she talks about is where "the funny cat does a pop-off" (followed by squeals of laughter)...gawd only knows what she makes of the rest of it.
Arte, hang in there if you can...sometimes you've got to skate thru/over the reading, no matter how much time you have. I'm having goldfish-brain at times at work too LOL and I don't even have sleep deprivation to blame. Hugs - I hope A settles ok tonight for you.

Dora - we don't watch it at our place, although I turned the TV on the other morning because she wanted to watch Bob and she wouldn't let me turn Dora off. And she knows who Dora is because there is a tent with her on it at school. K is really into Thomas and keeps asking when he is coming back. She does like Play School, but not when the yucky man is on (we can't really clarify which one is yucky as it changes day to day and is sometimes just that she doesn't like his shoes.....)
Arte - don't know what to say about the sleeping, but feel free to let it all out in here.

oh Arte! that is just so tough and insanity inducing with the (lack of!) sleep...we have a mum in our MG with two kids just the same (hmmm spookily a pigeon pair with older brother too!). and her DD Anna just WILL NOT sleep. ever. dont know how she does it....i'm not sure she knows how she does it either lol. i think her way of getting through is to basically use whatever nap time they have during the day to nap herself, but she said it's not that effective as they are both catnappers :o
G: we dont have dora here either! is it on free to air? i know that leila loves it though as she saw it ONCE at a friends house and is obsessed to the max. so strange...i want to know their marketing campaign and bottle it lol!
AFM: well we are in recovery mode it seems :crossfingers: from the allergy (that as yet is not known). the hives are still there from hour to hour, but no longer across her face or throat...that was WAAAYYY too scary for my liking. took her to the GP and she has some antihistamine meds for the itching. also have an appt in 4 weeks for the allergist to get the ball rolling. have to wait all that time as apparently she needs to be symptom free for them to adequately make an assessment. it's going to be tough i reckon trying to keep the fruit at bay.
am excited though as my Mum gets here tomorrow night :leap:. have decided i can then have the baby lol! arrghhhh she is soooo going to be in there for another 4 weeks i just know it lol!

i don't think dora is on free to air- we watch both dora and diego on foxtel. if you are ever looking for dvds though you can get 3 dora/diegos for $30 at woolworths. i would highly recommend them, my kids absolutely love them.
Ginger I reckon we're up for some new DVDs after the labrynth episode. We were still on video tapes when dd1 was little bahaha how old do I feel!

Well my sis broke the news yesterday she has sold her house & is moving to qld in about 3 seconds.. I'm totally devastated, have spent most of our lives apart & now when finally have a decent chance of getting a few quality years together she leaves! I totally understand her reasons for going so I can't be mad, but I can be very very sad.
oh no, sorry your sis is moving :( i guess it means more holidays to qld though, so nice sunny weather and beaches :)

Cass, Yay for your mum coming. I was just looking at the full moon and I reckon you are gonna pop soon! I have full sympathy for your mothers group friend. It is not fun when they just won't sleep. I honestly didn't think they could be worse than W was, but although he woke very very frequently at least he would go straight back to sleep after a feed. Miss A is a total nightmare. With the late nights, 2am parties and now this refusal to resettle it is driving me mad. And there is no chance of a catch up nap during the day because she only sleeps for 30-40 minutes the entire day and W doesn't have a nap anyway. So far her record is 8am-11pm with a 30 minute nap during the day.
So last night A was up until 12.30am. My DH won himself a heap of brownie points staying up with her, and then he took a sick day and I went to the library for a couple of hours to do a bit of study. And would you believe she has done the same thing tonight! Far out! She is finally getting some teeth that look like they are going to cut in the next couple of days so hopefully she will stop this when they come through. This whole sleep situation is making it really hard to enjoy her, I am struggling to bond with her at all. I feel like I am just looking after her out of obligation because I was stupid enough to have another baby.
oh arte :hug: that is just way too tough. my hat is off to you to even be able to function and keep putting one foot in front of the other :hug: i just wish i knew of some strategy that could work, but i just dont. just :pray: that time is the fixer and healer...oh and a time machine to when she is like a teen and you need to poke her in the ribs with the broom to get her outta bed :rofl:
MD: argh! that is sad! and yes, you have all open release to feel that sadness...but i reckon G is onto something...holidays in QLD...leave the kids with her and head to the islands lol! (this is my grand plan when the girls are older lol).
G: i *think* i might have to get the DVDs...i have noooo rose-coloured visions of me being a domestic/maternal goddess when this bub arrives and will sheepishly admit that the 'babysitter' box will be in use...wish i could say that it will be different but i dont want to set myself up for a reliable disappointment.
(this time in my pregnancy with Leila the hossy sent DH home 'cause i wasnt in labour...20 minutes later BAM! lol).
cass- i think you should definitely get the dvds and not feel guilty about it at all. trust me, it will be the best $30 you ever spent, you're gonna have your hands full soon :) so hopefully you head off to safeway today! LOL
why didn't anyone tell me how cool the kids' stuff is at ikea? we ventured there today and i spent most of the time absolutely spewing over finding the absolute coolest boys' bed i've ever seen and not being able to buy it as L already has one (that he refuses to sleep in). now i'm trying to somehow justify buying it for J......
eta- arte have you tried an amber teething necklace? i know they seem like hippy weird things but they really do work. i gave one to my friend whose dd was a terrible teether and she called me to say that she had got all her molars through and they had no idea until they noticed them in her mouth one day.
i was in Ikea the other day too!!!! and totally agree that it is AWESOME. it was lucky that i was having pre-labour contrax and needed to leave as I had my hot little hands on the GORGEOUS kids kitchen....how COOL is it??!!! we got Leila's bed from Ikea. totally love it...man i wish i was there right now....
Haha Ginger that is hilarious, we have raved about Ikea fairly often in this thread, it's not like you to miss any of the retail-related info LOL. Missy E has a bed (plus bedroom accessories) from Ikea which we all adore, and I have a plan for DD1's total Ikea bedroom makeover, which probably won't happen for a while but will be worth the wait!
Cass...soooo...is L getting the Ikea kitchen for her 3rd birthday? LOL Totally recommend the play kitchens, ours gets played with *all the time*, even the big kids play with it when they visit.

Well my CC/FDC visiting schedule got interrupted today after DD woke up with a pink eye. *sigh* She was cranky and uncooperative all day, she hasn't had a temp at all but it only occured to me tonight I that I could've given her some panadol, the dr said her tonsils were swollen so maybe she had a sore throat as well. She wasn't rubbing her eyes & she didn't have a fever so I just didn't think about the panadol. I'm having one of those how-dumb-am-I moments since I thought about it.
Ok you Melbournites, it is f'ing freezing. It's not just cold, it is snap your nipples off kind of freezing. I could have done with some pre-warning. :p It should only ever be this cold if you are up the snow carving up the slopes.
And I feel your disease ridden snotty pain. We have been cold free for the last 6 months, except when we visit Australia. Sure we get Malaria and other random tropical viruses, but the snot getting around Melbourne is pretty spectacular. I don't know how you manage with cold after cold. Is it just me or does it seem worse this winter here?
Cass- Not long to go, i saw that birthpool and got all excited for you. Hope all goes to plan and you have an amazing experience. You sound very calm and and ready.
MD- how is work panning out? Was it just like riding a bike? or more like a horse that has been rested in a paddock for too long and is trying to buck you off? Somedays i long for a bit of brain stimulating work, but then i worry that my hibernating brain cells might not wake up on request! I really do feel much less intelligent these days. Kind of like my brain is foggy.

Think i'm off to Chadstone today, although ikea sounds tempting.... there is only so much i can fit in 2 suitcases though. Lu has a very cool kitchen in PNG, when i get back i'll take a pic. I got the woodworking department to make it. She loves it, i could do with a bit of fake food, do they sell any in ikea?
Hey JM!! I don't think it is any worse this year, but I think you've just gotten used to being free from it. If you are heading to Chaddy today, go to Kids Central - they have all those pretend fruit/food toys.
MD, bugger about the junkyitis striking again.
The rain is both a blessing and a curse ATM. We are loving it because things are just so green and lush and wet and the crops look fantastic, but it i so wet that you just can't do anything. We can only get across part of our farm in a vehicle, everywhere else is motorbike only otherwise you get bogged to the arse LOL. It is currently raining steadily too, so that's more rain to top things up. One big bonus is the regular rain means we have loads of water so the kids are loving having deeper baths - before the bath would only have 2inches of water in it. So it's all good, but we've just forgotten what a wet year is like.

cass- well i think we are going to buy the bed for L....we already have 2 mattresses so we only need the set-up iykwim? i can't resist it. the kitchen is the best kids' kitchen i have ever seen. L was obsessed with it. once again, i was spewing we already have one.
md- i totally 'heard' all the ikea stuff....but it is a good hours drive for me and the 'experience' is a bitof a nightmare with the 2 kids...just a shame that the stuff is soooooo good.
jm- this is the coldest winter we have had since we moved to the Hills in 2006. absolutely. without a doubt. dh is absolutely freezing. we have gone through mountains of firewood....and i have to tell you that fallen trees on the side of the road don't last too long around here. everytime i see one there's usually a man with a chainsaw and a trailer already hacking into it, so i think everyone is feeling it.
ikea had heaps of little cool kitchen accessories- like food, pots and pans, cute little teacups- you could go crazy if you wanted to.
we're feeling the cold alot more this year too. it just seems that the maximums are really maximums. like yesterday here in northcote was 4 degrees at 8.30am but with windchill it was -1. that's cold for melbourne! kinda more canberra lol!
not sure if Ikea have the fake food...but they have divine kitchen utensils, tea sets etc (as G mentioned).
