Arte - you crack me up!! I am here, safe and not surrounded by Lego. Work was crazy just before Christmas and then we were at my parents place and now we're home just relaxing. I did pop on the other day to check out the end of the last thread though. I have completely read the Millenium trilogy since Christmas and generally feeling pretty good (except the shocking cough that is giving me attacks everytime I go to bed so DH and I have been in different beds the last week). I do feel though that I am keeping up with all of you because of FB though which is good.
Congratulations Arte - I have everything crossed that this one is a sleeper. Hugs about Chim.
Sounds like everyone had a good Chrissy. K was totally spoilt, her presents ended up going over 3 days because of the sheer volume of them. We had bought a lot of little things (mainly books) and MIL just went overboard. Including a dolly stroller - the third one she has given her and we had one anyway!!
We had a quiet NYE - I've never really gotten into it and there isn't much around the 9pm mark here so we were all in bed normal time.
Trill - your new pup look gorgeous. How's DH's dog going with the sore foot?
Oooh, evening meetup without kiddies - sounds good!
MP - sounds like a lovely holiday
JM - wow, what a swimmer! K starts a 9 day intensive next week. She's still not back up to where she was at the end of the same thing last summer.
Cass - very impressed with the cubby, especially that you managed to do it without L finding out!
K is having a sleep over tonight at MIL's and DH and I are going out for a nice dinner his sister gave us for Christmas. At the moment she is asleep on the floor next to the bed, folded up in her little doona.
BTW - I got a GHD for Christmas, now I just need to work out what to do with it!
Cally!! Nice to know you are not trapped by lego ROFL. Speaking of which, DS1 and DH have been having a huge lego fest and have gone crazy building vehicles of all descriptions. I'm with you on the GHD. I have a babyliss mini one and I"m still not terribly confident using it. Where are you going for dinner? DH and I haven't had an adult only dinner in years.
And Marvin's foot is fine now. She seems to be over the infection so the penicillin worked thankfully, but she seems to have aged a lot. She sleeps under our bedroom and all night she kept me awake with her snuffling, sneezing, snoring and coughing LOL. And she is generally just slower. She is also officially retired now too - we had shearing the other day and it was the first time since we got her that she never went with DH. He took Jackie though and she was so tired by the time they came home LOL. Like a little baby after a big day out. Marv seems to be coping well with her too - so long as Jackie doesn't annoy her or gets in her face too much she is fine, but she did snap at her yesterday.
Oh and we have finally got A in a big bed! Not the ones we brought, just a spare single one that MIL had because SIL needed the cot for her baby so we've just using another single in the meantime. He's going really well in it. Last night I got up to go to the loo and checked on the kids and both he and L were sleeping in the exact same position - ACROSS the bed LOL.
Cally, good to see you! Glad you had a good Christmas. Does your MIL forget that she has already given K several strollers? Dumb question: Is the GHD some sort of hair thing?
Trill, my dog started the groaning/snoring a few months ago. She also kept having really loud dreams. It was pretty annoying when I was trying to sleep (she was in our room) but I think it was because her hearing was going and she didn't realise how loud she was being. Yay for A shifting into the big bed! I am really surprised that he would stay in a cot at this age!
I should be doing an assignment but here I am on BB....
Being in a cot didn't really phase him. I did wonder if we would have trouble getting him to take to a big bed, but when we told him what we were doing, he just said "Can I keep my pillow?" and once we told him yes, that was that, he was OK with it. I think the poor kid thought we were giving everything in the cot to her as well, but when he realised that the blankets and pillow were staying here he was OK. Plus it wasn't really a cot anymore anyway - we hadn't put the side up on it in probably a year, so it was no different to a bed with a safety rail on it I suppose.
seems to of been a stress free transition Sherie! good boy! it's funny, Leila sleeps straight as in her bed, but marta is a side sleeper. many a night i walk into our room and i see two feet sticking out the side...she already seems to big for her cot lol! not used to bigger babies me thinks lol!
the snapping at the puppy is totally normal. puppies can be annoying  "playwithmeplaywithmeplaywithme" lol.
Trill and Cally - you girls need to get on you tube and check out how to curl and straighten with ghd.
LOL G, I probably should. It just never looks as straight as what the hairdressers can get it when they straighten it.
Cass, E hardly moves at all during the night but the other 3 are all really restless sleepers and end up all over the bed in a night. It's often I check on them and have L with his head up the other end of the bed.
I'm the newest member of the GHD wannabe club *sigh*.
Arte we had a bit of out-of-control behaviour due to extreme tiredness recently, my money is all that extra trike exercise is pooping W out, fingers crossed it gets better once you're back in the usual routine. We have that hole in the ozone right over SA too...sun seems more bitey here than on the eastern sea board.
JM, yay for the new house meri, hope this one works out well for you. Are you going to come back to Aus for the business end of your pg? That's great about L swimming like that!
MP, good you're planning more leisure time, holidays etc this year...it works cumulatively I reckon.
Cass, I'm a nervous nellie with missy E near water too (scarred by an earlier life event). But she's actually pretty good in the water so I think she would catch on pretty quickly if we started her in swimming lessons around now.
Cally LOL about all the dolly strollers. I bet MIL hankered after one all through her childhood but didn't get one, kwim. Hope you enjoyed your dinner, what a great idea for christmas!
Trill (and Arte) - are you both doing a third (summer) semester or is this just normal for your course? Mine closes down completely between Nov and Feb!
Trill - yay for big bed boy! Has the new bed arrived or not yet? We're thick in a debate about whether to put dd1 in a loft bed. I seem to be the only person in the family who understands it won't create "more space" in her room because the underbed space is currently used for drawers & tubs (storage) so that will all have to go somewhere in order to put a desk or whatever under it :wall:
Here's something funny for you...Missy E has only just learnt (after months of me trying to teach her) that when she wakes up in the morning she can get out of bed by herself (before she would just lie there shouting out until someone opened the door, like she couldn't get out of bed until the door was open LOL).
LOL MD, how did that realisation come to her? I wish mine would have stayed in bed longer - they don't get the concept of just staying in bed because it's warm, or that they don't have to get up just because they are awake. We haven't got the bed yet, hopefully it wont be too much longer. We were going to ring them towards the end of the month to see if it came in early or not though. I get why you don't want a loft too - we looked at them and you don't gain anything at all by having them. Although we did see one that wasn't all that high - probably 4ft, but all the underbed part was drawers and storage already which would be great to get rid of rollerboxes etc.
It's taken about 3 weeks of us getting up, going to her room, opening the door and saying "you can get out of bed and open the door yourself" and then closing the door again LOL. I think she lies in bed a bit before she starts shouting anyway, she likes being in bed. Gotta love that!
DD has already got a cabin-style bed (probably about 5 foot) hence the functional storage space. I would like to use the situation to demonstrate to DD that she can't keep all her "stuff" AND have extra space magically in the room...something's gotta give, she needs to get rid of some of her junk!
Can you impart some of Oprah's decluttering wisdom onto her? LOL. It will get to that point with my girls too that they just can't keep all their stuff as they get older. But I think my girls take after DH's mother and are genetically predisposed to hoarding  The boys on the other hand are much easier - despite all that they have - there just never seems to be as much clutter in their room. Once we get the bunks we are getting a cheap desk and hutch for L to have in there as we will still have room for that and their toy box.
Trill, TBH I absolutey *dread* going there with her, I do it a couple of times a year and it's basically a day (and then usually some) of histrionics. Sometimes I just go in there and drag some stuff out myself when she's not here, which isn't ideal because she doesn't learn to do it herself then. I think you might be right - there's an inherent girl-ness to the problem - people tend to give girls things with lots fiddly bits whereas boys tend to get large chunky robust items. Even so, I don't think I will have the same problem with Missy E because she likes tidiness and often puts things away of her own accord. Whereas DD1 will swear that she has cleaned up her room and you go in there and there's still stuff all over the place! LOL
She sounds an awful lot like my girls LOL. When I was a kid, I could get my room into a terrible state, but I would clean it if I was asked, or if it got to the stage where it looked more like the local tip ;) but my sister, she is just gross and just would not clean her room - it was hell when we shared a room! Even now she is still not much of a 'cleaner'. I really hope that my girls aren't like that at all and that somehow between now and when they leave home I will have taught them they need to clean up after themselves. How much is she using any of her things at any one time? Maybe you could set up a 'use all the time' box, 'not used for 6 months' box and a 'not used for 12 months' box and it might be easier for her to see why she doesn't need to keep something that she doesn't use.
We were just today planning a loft bed for W. His bed atm doesn't have anything under it (base very close to the ground) so I think we will make more room.
MD, I am doing a summer school paper. My course isn't a set course, I just need to do 8 papers, 4 at 3rd year level in major topic. So I am just doing a filler pharmacology paper because there wasn't much choice for summer school.
Both of my kids sleep dead still. They are always in the same position when they wake up.
I forgot about that question MD LOL. In 'their' wisdom, it was decided that anyone who started the Bach Ed from 2010 onwards would also have to prove their Band 4 proficiency in English and Maths. If you can't, then you wont be able to teach. So what I'm doing is the Teacher Education Enabling Course which is the two math and english subjects I need to prove my Band 4. The subjects can be done during the regular semester anytime during the next 2 years as a single subject on top of the degree itself, but it was going to be much easier for me to do it over Summer and get it done and out of the way. Plus if I do it now as a course itself it is free, but if I do it as a single subject then I have to pay for each subject. But I don't think I'll do a summer semester again because it is crammed into 8 weeks instead of 13 so it's really full on. There are loads of people doing this degree too that want a trimester system to get it done quicker, but I reckon you'd burn out if you had no decent break in between.
Ok, all makes sense now. I've never had any desire to do a summer semester, but all other things in your life being an even keel, I can imagine the attraction to get it finished sooner. Esp if you're living in next to no income and can't do anything or go anywhere during the breaks cos you're too poor
Another 11pm bedtime for A, but I guess it doesn't matter. I doubt I would have got much sleep anyway - can't stop thinking about Lolli. Her kids are basically the same age as mine and I can't help imagining my family in that situation. I really hope there is some sort of miracle for them.
I know Arte, it's just terrible isn't it. They must be going through hell. I keep thinking about them too.
MD- I was the biggest pig as a child, there was no empty flat surface in my room, including the floor. My mum used to say if I wanted to live in all that junk, it was my choice, and she refused to clean it, just insisted I close the door. I hated throwing things out too, must be a girl hoarding thing. At about 15 I suddenly decided I wanted to live in a little more organised fashion! Must have been the boy influence. :p
Mum thought it was the biggest joke when I went working on superyachts, cleaning toilets with cottonbuds and ironing undies.
Lori and her family were my first waking thought this morning. Just like that her life has changed to some kind of waking nightmare. But I do believe that prayers and positive energy does help the recipient, and T has a huge community of people praying for him, so I hope that it helps in some way. And now Lulu has had a terrible loss too,
JM, please don't tell me there's another 3 years or so of total mess-making :wall:. LOL at your superyacht cleaning days.
Missy E has been a mega cranky pants these last few days. She has taken to shrieking loudly any time any of her (often unreasonable) requests are refused. Doesn't help that DD1 (at home on hols) pays her lots of attention when she does it. ARGH.
DH's homemade pizza tonight...the man is in making-up mode after he failed to listen to my hardware store advice this morning, resulting in the huge spring from our garage door springing off and smashing my car's back window. $500 to repair, fortunately it's mostly covered by our insurance but we may still have to pay for the tinting...grrr...but thanking my lucky stars there wasn't a little person riding her tricycle nearby at the time.
hi girls!
MD: leila has days where she yells from her bed in the morning, but mostly now gets up herself and grabs her cup of milk from the kitchen that DH prepares the night before lol. on the mornings that she shrieks from the bed it's usually 'cause she hasnt slept enough...and then i know that we are going to have an *interesting* morning lol.
(oh, and we have had mega attitude lately too...something in the air maybe . Leila has been deliberately defying the rules etc and it is starting to drive me bonkers. every little thing now needs to be challenged and laughed at :o).
JM: *snap* i was a miss piggy-wig for aaaggesss. it wasnt until i started to notice boys and have girlfriends over that the mess got better...being shamed at school was always the fear lol.
Arte: yeah DH and i had a big convo about what we would do or what would happen if one of us were to go. not a great thing to talk about, but something worth talking about IYKWIM. we havent organised guardians or anything for the girls and we dont have any wills...we are bad. so we have resolved to have it done this year. peace of mind.
Sherie: i'm with you on that one. i like the semester thing, as i too reckon that trimesters are just a recipe for burn-out and a further opportunity to just rush education. some things are worth taking time...
AFM: ssooooo tired today. i think i need to get more iron supps. i ran out and had been travelling ok, but the last few days i realise that i need it. the dizziness is always a good clue.
also, marta has taken to having a chat at 3am in the morning; which is okish, BUT then today refused all talk of sleep. so was awake from 7.30am to 7pm without pause. didnt even look tired :o. my thinking is the heat TBH. the house got hot and i wouldnt of wanted to sleep either.
leila has been looking a bit flat lately so i got her on some fish oil, but since then has been having the runs...do you think it could be coincidence or related?? i am worried that it might be the fruit flavouring stuff...arghhh!
MD, that is very lucky that E wasn't near the spring! DH was fixing the IL's garage door once and the spring sprung and hit him in the arm just above his elbow - major dead arm! Then his dad walked up and grabbed his arm thinking it wasn't that bad - it is the only time I have ever seen him with tears in his eyes from physical pain.
Clare, bummer about the 3am party. A is quite prone to them. 10.38pm and no-where near needing a sleep. DH has offered to stay up with her tonight. She does this every time she is getting teeth. Drives me mental!
We don't have any guardians or wills either. I have been thinking about life insurance since Michelle71 lost her husband earlier in the year. I just applied and got the papers printed last week. I am sooo faxing them off tomorrow. It is another bill each month, but I am totally willing to pay it just for the piece of mind. Guardian wise there isn't really anyone that I would want to raise my kids. I guess it would be the IL's but they are mid 50's already so three kids would probably be a bit much. Plus they are lovely people but they tend to do everything for their kids/overparent and it creates selfish inconsiderate adults (i.e. BIL!).
I feel so so bad for Lulu. I remember reading Uncle Amy's posts and she was always someone that I would like to know more iykwim. I don't know, but I sometimes wondered how she was getting on. Poor Lulu having to tell her son that his mum is gone - he is only a month younger than our bubs :(
HI Girls
i'm super upset about lulu and lolli too..
i have bad swimmer's ear- too much pool and beach action the last few days. does anyone know any remedies? i'm going mad here.
this has just been so awful. i didnt realise that her sister had passed. man.
and Lulu is such a giving person in BB-land. i only hope that we can repay her many acts of kindness in her and her family's time of need KWIM.
Ginger, you can get over-the-counter swimmers ear drops at the pharmacy, but if you're desperate you could put a few drops of white vinegar in to tide you over until you can get some drops.
Yes it's a timely reminder to think about wills and insurance and guardianship. Our DD's godparents are named as their legal guardians in the event that anything happens to both of us at the same time, although they know we are happy to trust their judgement when it comes to deciding if our girls are to live with other of our family members. Insurance wise, that's something we should probably investigate too.
thanks md- will get dh to put some in now :)
yes it is really awful, and really makes you appreciate what you have. i've been super upset all arvo ever since i logged on to fb and read the news of lulu's sister. when i think of little Fin i can feel huge tears well up in my eyes.
Pop some cotton wool in to keep it in there for a few minutes (for that ultra-dorky ear-infection look LOL), then let it drain out completely.
:grouphug: everyone.
Incase you haven't seen it on FB

YAY!! what a beautiful thing to log on and see!!! :leap: an new baby!!! congratulations Isa!
How excitingness!! :cheer:
Yesterday I had a feeling something might be up with her because she'd not been on FB and thought that things could be happening for her.
Anyone who doesn't have a will or life insurance set up, please do it first thing tomorrow - it is so important to have these things in place JIC something does happen. We don't actually have any formal custodians for the kids, but we know that DH's parents would take them in. Custody is hard because if there is a dispute and it gets to court, then the court will place them with someone in the best interests of the child, so it may not be who you want them to end up with.
Cass, I'd try some brauers or a probiotic as a pick-me-up for L and see if that helps.
Trill I knew last night something was happening, I just had a feeling and couldn't stop thinking about her.
We have will's and life insurance, its doesn't cost us much. We also have trauma insurance but will be getting rid of that. Do you guys have private hospital? We do but we don't use and are thinking about getting rid of it but I am nervous to do so. In our will's we have my mum as the kids custodians she also has power of attorney for both DH and I.
We haven't set up a power of attorney for each other, we probably should. And a medical power of attorney too so if we need someone to make medical decisions for us they can. Mum and I are setting one up for her because I'm her next of Kin now so once she's out of hospital we're getting it all set up. We do have private health, but we will keep that - its' been a godsend for us.
DH has life insurance...i dont...
TBH i just dont know who could take our girls and that makes me really frightened. financially speaking DHs parents could do it, but they are not young (heading into their 70s soon) and well, they are very different from us IYKWIM. my mum could do it, but is very difficult to live with and well, i shudder to think that they would have to go through what i did (man, i sound mean, i love mum, but you know...).
this will require heaps of navel gazing me thinks.
Cass, it is the same for us - Dh's parents are nearly 70 and 65 respectively and well, you know how terrible Mum's health is. But the IL's would still be the best option by far to raise our kids the way we want to. Even if Mum was well, I would still rather that they be with the IL's. It sure isn't an easy thing to decide is it?
We don't have wills or life insurance, I really should organize it. Do I see a solicitor?
I don't know who'd have the girls either. I do know I am very strongly opposed to DHs family having them. He grew up in a house full of domestic violence. Everyone pretends it doesn't/didn't happen and it scares me MIL would fight for the kids and deny the past iykwim.
We don't have anything set up, but I have added it to the To Do list. I think I would get my sister to look after K.
Hmmm think I need a to do list too Cally.
Hi ladies, just popping in for another :grouphug:
thanks MD. i think we all need many of these
i am running on mebbe a few hours sleep in the last 48 hours. yes, we are in the midst of 'howcoolisrollingoveromgihaverolledovernowwhatsome onehelpmewaahhhhh' mode with marta ATM. driving me bonkers. no sleep is not fun.
BBL xx
