We also dont have a will or anything - think we would want BIL and SIL to take boys, though not sure how they would feel about that with 2 of their own at the same age... its an awful thing to think about. i am sure DH parents would assume it should be them.. and of course i would be more comf w my mum... hmmm.... to think about.
all this news on BB has been sad... dont think i have found the thread re lulu...

we are back from hols -was wonderful and just what we all needed... back to work tomorrow....

Cass, commiserations on the sleep front. Pretty bad here atm but I can see a tooth nearly through so hopefully we will get some sleep soon. I was hoping it was 12 all at once, molars included but nope, it is just one bringing her to a grand total of six teeth. This teething saga is going to last forever!

MP, glad you had a good holiday and less stressful year ahead of you.

JM, I am not sure about wills, but you can do insurance online. I am owner of DH's policy and vice versa.

There really isn't any good option for guardians for our kids, so I am just hoping that at least one of us is still kicking when the last leaves home!

not much to say from here in melbourne. But i am in a bit of shock at the news yesterday afternoon. Seeing Toowoomba under water like that. particularly at the Grand Central (where the footage of the cars going down the road). i have been there a thousand and one times. man, it's like the only place to hang out in toowoomba. i have been crossing that road with Leila many many times. i cannot believe it. I couldnt get through to Opa as the lines were all busy :wall:.thankfully the water only got to his back door. i am hoping that there will be no more flooding. afterall he is an 80 year old man on his own. talk about bad dreams last night; i cant stop thinking about those kids :(

Clare - glad that your Opa is OK. It's all a bit scary isn't it, I can't imagine how you feel knowing the area so well.

I'm back at work, really over explaining to people that I don't have the flu, it's just a cough and seeing as I've had it longer than 2 weeks already, going back home to bed is not going to make me better faster than being at work!!

Cass, that is good news that your Opa is alright. The bits of footage that I have seen of the floods look terrible! We used to live on the Brisbane/Ipswich border - DH's work was right next to the Bremer river which is apparently bursting. It is just crazy!

It's just unfathomable, how huge the scale of it is now...it was bad last week but now it's just exponentially worse! I've been alternating between wanting to know all the details (cos my sis is there) and wanting to stay in my happy little bubble. So glad your Opa is safe Cass, I hope they don't get any more water through there. Really shocking when it's a place you've spent time and it's part of you personal history.

Cally, nearly everyone I know who had a cold or the flu over winter had a terrible cough for weeks after the illness had actually gone :hug:

Cass, I did get spoilt. I gots me a shiney pandora necklace - I"ve been hinting at one for years and he finally listened LOL, plus a cookbook and some bench cannisters. And I'm so glad that your Opa is safe :hug: It's just as tragic as watching the footage from Black Saturday only in a horrible reversal.

MD, I'm so peeved that they aren't saying anything on the news about the north of NSW - my little brother is in Grafton staying with friends and was due to leave to come home on Thursday, but called me today in a panic saying they'd been given evac orders, but they didn't have to go as the house is 2 storeys. But when I talked to him later, he said that the panic had passed and that he was alright and they are safe where they are, but it is still a bloody great worry and Mum is beside herself and frustrated with being stuck in hospital and knowing there is nothing any of us can do kwim.

Trill :hug:, I think the area of effect is so large that they're having trouble getting across all that info...I only watched ABC tonight and they pretty much just showed the same stuff over a few times, NSW was mentioned but only in passing. I think everyone is freaked out that not only is it flooding in a huge way, but about to be in one of our larger capital cities...we are so accustomed to stuff happening in far away places, it's a shock when suddenly it's happening right in the middle of things.

BTW I had assumed your mum would've gone home from hossy by now, how is her recovery going?

Its like pulling hens teeth trying to find any current info too. But he has promised he will keep his phone charged and call me if anything happens.

Mum is still in hospital and still at least 10 days away from coming home - and that's being optimistic!! Her recovery is going well and the foot is healing well - then her Dr comes back from his christmas break and decides that he wants to do another dye test to check the stent in her groin (for circulation) and maybe take some more of her toe - which would take the healing process right back to the start again!! So she had the dye test done - they realised that they screwed up and poked through one of her veins, on Monday the top Vascular surgeon from St Vincents in Sydney comes out to Wagga and does it again for her. Now her Dr wants to send her for another scan to see how the new stent is going. It is just so frustrating that the Dr wont give her any definites - it's maybe this and maybe that. It's giving her the ****s. She's been there since December 10 and all she wants is to come home. So it's been a blessing in a way that J has been at his mates on holiday so he's not been here but now that's turned into a drama too.

What a pain. I hope she's out sooner rather than later.

Trill- Are you watching the news? A guy from the BOM just said they are worried about Grafton today and the flood will peak at about 9pm tonight. Just wanted you to be up to date, not intentionally trying to worry you. :hug:

I just found an ABC news online article that said areas around grafton have been given evac orders this morning - that includes Bushgrove where my brother is. But they think grafton itself will be protected by the levy around it.

ARGH! this is all so confusing. I just spoke with my brother who said that they were still fine where they were - it was just the lower part of the town that has been evac'ed BUT the road between there and Grafton is closed till at least 9pm tonight - so it's not cut, but just closed I suppose for safety and they weren't expecting the peak till 9pm apparently. So we're crossing fingers that the road will open and he will be able to catch his train from Grafton to come home tomorrow at 6am because rail services are still operating at this stage.

:hug: Trill. Sounds like he is high and dry. I hope he can get out tomorrow, but if not it sounds like he's in an ok spot.

Ginger, I think it's a case of waiting for it to run off naturally through local watercourses (eventually to rivers and then the ocean) or evaporate. It's the reason Brisbane is going to flood - because of the sheer volume of water moving down from further up river, rather than just from rain falling directly on that spot. That's why they kind of have some idea of when to what extent the rivers are likely to peak over the next few days (with a lot of clever understanding of how much water will soak into the ground, how much will run off, how much will flow into river systems & some very high-end computing programs). It will take a couple of days for the water to peak and then receed.

ETA - I don't know about the NSW stuff, but on the ABC News site there is a map of brisbane with the suburbs that are expected to flood, so you get an idea that the areas affected are those in the natural depression from the river's original valley.

G: the water will eventually head to the ocean. they just found a cow swimming 12kms off the coast near keppel island :( poor poor creature...

i am quite distressed. so many family and friends that are evacuating right now. but mostly i am distressed about grantham. i have travelled through that town twice a week for 10 years and always stopped at the hotel there...i cannot believe it.

G a lot of the water from around Rockhampton will find it's way into the Murray Darling basin and then a lot of it will find it's way out to sea along the QLD/NSW coast. In about a month, all the water from Rocky will flood all the places along the Darling river system - so Bourke and those areas. Its something that is going to be affecting people for a long time yet. But at least they have time now to prepare for the water well in advance.

Spoke to my brother after seeing reports they were door knocking houses in bushgrove, but he said they are still fine and it was only voluntary. I just don't think that the people he is staying with are taking all of this very seriously kwim? I mean, when I called he and his mate and his siblings were at the house while their mother was off who knows where!

I am feeling really sad and helpless about the floods, especially knowing the worst is yet to come. Its kind of strange to know I am so close yet not in any danger. I have friends who are stuck in Ipswich and also friends in Toowoomba (who thankfully are fine).
I just wish I could do something, I am going through all our wardrobes for clothes and toys etc and picked up a whole heap of toiletries to donate to a local charity which is doing a collection. I am also going to donate a photo session to one of the FB auctions. It just doesn't feel like enough.

This is just mind boggling! I was just looking at pics of Goodna - entirely underwater! Only rooftops showing of the main street. We lived a suburb over from Goodna, it was my local video shop/KFC/woolies etc. And it isn't the best suburb around - many of the people living there are the likely demographic to have no contents insurance. I can't get my head around it.

I am absolutely FUMING!!! I just spoke with my brother again after reading on the SES website that ALL residents were supposed to evacuate to Ballina or Coffs and the dingbat mother of his mate has decided that they will stay right where they are thank you very much. They will be alright apparently because their house is on stilts. ****ing stilts! Have they not been watching the news and seen that houses on stilts are being washed away? He said to me now that he realises that they left it too late and now they can't leave at all. I asked if they had enough food and apparently they went shopping yesterday but FFS! And apparently he called countrylink at least and they said that they understand and as soon as he is able to travel, his ticket will still be accepted, but I can't trust him on that so I will have to call them and find out how true that is. But as it stands, the SES website says it will be MONDAY before they can get out. I just don't think I can bare to tell Mum all this. I don't even know if I can get the police to go and get him somehow in a rescue boat considering his age? I just cannot trust that this woman is going to do the right thing.

Oh Trill, I'm so sorry to hear that, I think I would be incoherent with swear words right about now. It would help if you had more info about what exactly is going on there. Is the house fully elevated or just raised on stumps? The fully elevated ones tend to be attached more firmly

Well he seems OK, but just very *meh* about the whole situation. I don't think he truly realises how bad it is either because he doesn't sound overly concerned that he can't get home. It makes it a little easier to bare knowing that I can get him on his phone though.

MD, I think it is fully up on stilts because he did say that it was a 2 storey house. I'm still not happy with the situation at ALL.

No I wouldn't be either. I've been watching the evening news (after going out this arvo to escape from it for a bit) and I *cannot believe* that after well over 24 hours of warnings, people STILL opted to stay in their houses in parts of Brisbane that went under in 1974 and have had to be rescued!!! It's just crazy.

MD I don't get it either. I don't know if they think they are pretty 'tough' for staying there and being able to say that they stayed there, like it's some twisted badge on honour or if they just value their *stuff* too much to leave?

I wonder if it's fear of looters or whether these are the sort of people who would be rednecks if we had more liberal gunlaws here in Oz :lol: - sorry that was a dreadful thing to say. Possibly it's denial - people don't ever really believe it's going to happen to THEM...it's easier to tell yourself you will be ok and business as usual I suppose. But they have such short memories - thinking back to aftermath of the fires in Vic when the biggest message to come out of that was Leave Early...I know this isn't a fire but still...would you risk your life and limb for your flat screen telly?

I think a lot of the stayers do think it can't happen to them. Only when the water starts lapping at the door do they realise that hey, maybe all the repeated warnings were right.

I know what you mean MD :hug: I totally agree, if the bushfires taught us anything, it was that stuff just does not matter in situations like this. If you get looted, claim it on insurance as theft.

Arte, that's the problem I just can't be sure either way. I did tell my Mum and she's so upset - I know she is going to worry herself sick over it.

I am just flabbergasted people don't heed these warnings. It's only 'stuff' You life is not worth risking over possessions. Not only are they risking their lives they are potentially requiring an already overloaded emergency crew to help them later on. It's just really self centered and short sighted imo.
