Glad to hear Lily is doing well, she is growing nicely. I remember when Harry was a bub he started drinking 20-30 mls more formula every bottle than he was supposed to (going by his weight etc) and the nurse tried to tell me I shouldn't let him drink that much and to give him water if he is still hungry! Needless to say I didn't follow her advice, if he wanted it I let him have it. Grace hasn't been like that though, she is more fussy with her milk!
Hi Mipsy and welcome to BellyBelly!
Congratulations on your daughters birth, and welcome to the world little Ashleigh!!
Tegan - glad to hear that Lily is doing so well!! Dont stress too much about the formula... I remember Aidyn always drank more than was recommended too, so just to remember that every baby is different, and what they tell you may only really be a rough guide.
I had one really, really great m/w in the hospital and she made me feel much more relaxed and confident, and assured me that babies cant really overfeed themselves... they will either purse up their lips to say they dont want any more, or if they drink too much they will throw it back up anyway!
Many thanks for the welcome! I have a feeling this will be a very friendly place where I can pop in for a laugh, or some support when I need it. Little Ashleigh had a dream Tuesday, perfect feeding and napping every 3 hours, unitl 9pm that night!!!! It's been a roller coaster since then, but hopefully we are back on track this evening. I think I am expecting too much in wanting a routine this early in.......
Tegan - it's lovely to hear about Lily, it's good to know that she is putting on weight and everything is going as it should. We had the child health nurse visit on Tues afternoon and Ashleigh is up to 3610gm. Very healthy and appears no problems with her food intake. She is also a guts and goes flat strap for 5-7 minutes then slows right down and falls asleep on me! She does exactly what Ambah wrote and purses her little mouth up and puts her nose in the air!!! Very funny really. We had our first walk out today, just to the park, and she slept through it all. I have yet to brave the shopping centre on my own though...... 8-[
cheers,
Anna
Well for the second night in a row Lily has slept right through! Last night she slept about 8hrs and the night before, about 7.5hrs. Hoping this is the start of a trend! But am enjoying it while it lasts. Have also noticed that she loves being bathed. She's such a good baby. This is becoming easier than i thought!
Anyways, i hope you all have a very merry christmas and a happy new year. Hope there's more people in here next year!
All is going well, first few nights were tough as honestly, I had no idea, but it seems we are getting the hang of it.
I was beginning to dread breastfeeding time so I succumbed and invested in a pump and nipple cream, I will try using it just for 24 hours so my nipples can recover from the first few times I tried to feed (m/f at hospital gave me bad advice which saw Aidan on the boob for hours on end, so my nipples just need a bit of time to recover!). Pump was also good for me to just get 1 good night sleep and gave DH chance to feel useful so he fed Aidan at 2:30am and although I did have to get up to top him up as we ran out of expressed milk, it was much better than any other night.
As you can probably tell, Aidan is what we call a 'hungry hippo'! He eats and sleeps and thats it. He is PERFECT in every way.
Jess the first week I could sit with Matilda for 4 hours straight of feeding/burping/sleeping.... it was painful!! I remember on day 10 I had sat on the lounge feeding for 3.5 hours and when she came off she just screamed...so I phoned for help & all the advice I got was to keep going.... ](*,) thats all fine until your nipples feel like they are falling off!!! But the normal feeds until she was 3 weeks old took around an hour every two hours I would feed her for almost an hour...then have two hours off.... it was exhausting!!! I took to expressing & then after two weeks DH would give a bottle of 60mls of formula at night after I went to sleep so I could have some rest & we did that for 16 weeks....
I bottle fed Ryley but he would take up to 45 mins to start with and now is about 10 minutes for 180ml and 20 mins fr 240 ml- He is a gobble guts!! hehehe
Jessica, When I was in hospital one of the midwives said to just feed as long as Yasin wanted, like Christy I ended up feeling like my niple was going to fall off. The community midwife who visited me at home said that after forty minutes feeding it is probably just comfort sucking and that increasing the frequency of feeding rather than the lenght of the feeds built up a better supply of milk. Also you can take panadol if it gets too ouchy without effecting your milk. After I started taking her advice I found that things improved for me. If Aidan still wants to suck you could give him a clean finger or a dummy. The australian breastfeeding association are great. You can ring them 24/7 for advice.
Hang in there, it gets easier.
Glad to see you here Jess! I hope Beth can join us soon.
At the moment, Lily is having 120mls of formula each feed. It takes about 15 minutes, she is a total guts! This is even with the slow flow teats. I bought some of the nuk, anti colic ones, which seem to slow the feeds down to about 20mins which is good. I tried b/f in hospital, but she just wouldn't attach properly and it hurt sooo much! Even if she was attached properly, i could just cry with the amount of pain i was in. I think she just has a very, very strong suck.
Lily slept from 8:30pm to 4:30am last night. Then from 5:00am to 10:30am this morning! So that's 8hrs and 5.5hrs!! So i think it's safe to say she'll probably sleep through the night from now on(touch wood though!)
Sounds like we had very similar experiences with b/f. I was almost crying in pain too when Aidan would latch on, touch wood, it only hurts now at the start and then I become quite relaxed. I am still using the pump and bottle from time to time just to give my nipples a break! Aidan is a very good sucker but he takes forever (or what feels like - roughly 1hour) to finish off 100ml but I know if he doesnt have it all he will wake up sooner.
Any suggestions on how to make him feed faster (he seems to enjoy 5min power naps halfway through a feed) or is it just a matter of perserverance?!
And I thought bellybelly was amazingly helpful during pregnancy, I can just see how helpful it will be now!
I hope Lily does sleep through for you Tegan! Grace still wakes up at night but only once usually in the early morning. She is starting to sleep longer at night though so hopefully it won't be long.
I used a nuk teat when Harry was a baby but I hated it because it made the feeding process too slow - he would take over half an hour to finish a feed! But they are good for preventing colic. I use avent bottles and teats now which are really good.
Jess - Grace is a slow feeder too, although she is getting better. I think it is just a matter of perseverance, I don't know of any ways to get her to drink faster although it is frustrating! Using a faster teat can cause colic if bub isn't ready to upgrade yet. Sorry I am not much help!
Jess, I tickle the soles of Yasin's feet to stop the power naps. As time has gone by he has got a bit more efficient at feeding. Once your boobs stop hurting except for the letdown its a good chance to put your feet up and have a rest. I used to really find feeding painfull too but I figured that if I could squeeze a baby out I could cope with the sore boobs. It helped that I had been warned about them and knew that usually they hurt less after a while. If I had thought that it was going to keep hurting I would have given up.
