I had a fairly minor labial tear, but required about 7-10 stitches because of awkward positioning of the tear, and the midwife/doc was concerned it might not heal properly and cause problems. Anyway, we DTD at about.. 4-6 weeks I think it was? Mainly because the stitches took ages to dissolve and they got slightly infected so I had to take some ABs.
Once we did DTD again there was no pain whatsoever though. Felt completely normal but then DH was quite hesitant and careful too because he (well, we, really) were abit concerned it would hurt me, so it was a lot gentler than usual

It's different for everyone and is a combination of things - physical trauma, physical exhaustion, lack of sleep, emotional "worn outness" and potentially low oestrogen levels. If you are bfing you are more likely to have low oestrogen levels for the first few weeks after the birth. There is a cream you can use to help with this. It's best to speak to your health professional to find out more if you are interested in doing something about it. It does get back to normal - after the first couple of months for some, after the first couple of years for others - it all comes down to you and your own body and situation.
I always found the hormonal contraception was an issue too.
I was "uncomfortable" the first time but I think it was because I was nervous/tense expecting to feel pain. The next time (day hehehe) it was better/back to normal as I was more relaxed and not expecting to hurt.
