    Pill question...

    Hey girls

I am about to go back onto the pill(mono pill) and was wondering since its been like 5years since I've been on it, do we have to use condoms as well? I've never been on a mono pill only a triphasal one(they weren't about back then LOL) so are these pills quite effective and safe. I really don't want to use condoms as well, but then again I REALLY don't want to get pregnant again anytime soon!LOL!

Oh and did the mono pill muck you about? Its just that my lil sister went onto after she had her bub and she said she would bleed on and off in between cycles.

kirsty, obviously everyone is different, but with me personally, it mucked my body around. Each month I would bleed very heavily and have awful period pains. None of which I had ever experienced before, as my periods are always light and without period pain. I also constantly felt off and not quite myself. Once I went off it I felt 'normal' again and my periods have gone back to what they used to be.

Was that the mono pill Jod? It sounds similar to what my sister experienced.

    Hi,

I had the same bleeding issues on the mono pill, I ended up getting off it as I couldnt stand it.

When I was on the pill it was a monophasic pill, but it did actually contain both types of hormones.

It was wonderful! I went from having heavy, painful, irregular periods to being able to control when I had a period. They were also much lighter and heaps less painful. I couldn't cope at all with the triphasic pills as I still had the same heavy, painful period, I just knew when it was going to happen.

I did take this kind of pill a couple of years ago. I found that while I used it, I was constantly feeling "off", and had thrush almost constantly. I didnt have any random bleeding though. When I stopped using it, the thrush stopped and so did the off feeling.
I thought they were also not quite as reliable as the triphasal or combined ones?

Combined pills just mean they contain both eostrogen and progesterone, which can still be got in a monophasic pill.

Monophasic pills just contain the same levels of hormones in all the active tablets, where other types (biphasic or triphasic) contain levels that vary to mimic the natural cycle.

I found the triphasic ones to be absolutely horrendous! But with what I know now, I realise that was because my body doesn't have any sort of natural cycle to speak of, so taking the same levels of hormones constantly actually suited me much better.

I don't think monophasic pills are any less effective than triphasic, it's just a matter of what suits you personally. I thought they were great as I had absolute control over when I would have a period - it was much easier to skip one on the monophasic pills.

Oops my dumb brain. I got confused and was thinking mini pill there...
What I mean is, whenevr I was on the pill it was always a mono one, I never tried the biphasal one because the mono one worked just perfectly for me.

My GP tells me there is less risk of falling pregnant with a monophasic pill as there is no artificial hormonal fluctuation in that you are not changing dosages through the cycle as you do with a triphasic pill. Are you good with remembering to take it every day? Unless you miss a couple of days or something, you should be pretty right but it is of course up to you whether you decide to use other protection.

It's interesting really that the triphasic pills even exist. They are supposed to "mimic" your natural cycle but your natural cycle is irrelevant as you are not ovulating anyway!

I'm on the triphasic at the moment but have been on the monophasic as well in the past. I have noticed no difference with my cycle on either one ... both give me a very light period with minimal problems. I don't ever skip the red pills though otherwise I will eventually get the chopped liver period from hell.

Monophasic pills used to be much higher dosages than triphasic pills, but more recently, the monophasic doses have crept downwards and so these days they can be some of the lowest dosage pills about (that are not mini pills). I used Mycrogynon 20 after DD was born (was terrified on the mini pill) and it didn't affect my lactation, it's been good as gold and I've been on it ever since. No strange hormonally driven emotions like in the bad old triphasal day!

Maybe try this pill for a few months and then if it doesn't suit you see your dr and according to what your symptoms are they will select another more suitable variety. Cos unfortunately no one ever knows which one will be the right one until you have tried them for a couple of months!
    Good luck
