Thyroid problems

Hi everyone!

I am wondering who here has experienced problems with their thyroid!? I went to the Dr this morning as I have been feeling very nauseous over the past week, as well as being very tired and not being able to lose weight despite trying "a little". I have quite a bit of extra weight on me so my Dr seems to think that with what I have been doing that I should be losing weight and if not losing then definatly not gaining which I seem to have done.

I am off for blood tests this afternoon and the results should be back Wed/Thurs but the Dr didn't want to go into too much detail just in case I don't have any problems. Can someone please shed a little light on the situation please as I am clueless!

Hi it sounds like if you have a thyroid problem it could be underactive and be a type of hypothyroidism. This is quite a common problem and the outlook is good.

I have hyPERthyroidism, meaning my thyroid is overactive. I have a thread about it.

Both types make you feel very tired, so i know how you feel. The thyroid regulates a few bodily functions including your metabolism. If you are struggling to lose weight then that could be due to a thyroid problem. I think more people ought to have their thyroid levels tested if they are always feeling tired and have weight gain/loss issues. Symptoms can be mild and seemingly insignificant but it could mean a problem. Women are more frequently affected than men.

You will have to wait for your blood test and go from there.
For me, I then had to have a biopsy, and a nuclear scan. (neither are the most pleasant of tests) i have hypothyroidism. (meaning low function)
It's a bit of a waiting game I am afraid, and then see what your Gp wants to do when you get the test results.

Yep, the nuclear scan was scary to think about until i found out that you get more radiation from an xray.

Thanks for the info girls. When I went to get my bloods done today there were closed So I am going tomorrow to get it done now.

There are many issues that could cause the problem - some with very simple solutions.

The thyroid needs iodine to help with conversion of one hormone to another. Many people are iodine deficients as we don't eat enough seafood and we no longer take iodised salt.

So, if you have enough hormones for conversion but not enough iodine, your thyroid will be underactive.

If you have enough iodine but not enough of the first hormone, you will also have an underactive thyroid. I think there are two conversion processes so your first may be fine, the second may be sluggish.

It realy is test and see.

Unless you eat only sea salt (not table salt) and no fish or convenience foods (which usually contain iodised salt) it's very unlikely your hypothyroidism is iodine-deficiency. You can take kelp tablets if iodine is likely to be an issue.

My hypothyroidism came to light after DD was born too. Wait and see what your blood results are. Be assured that it is NOT difficult to treat and it's VERY common. In days gone by subclinical or borderline hypothyroidism was not diagnosed and sufferers just, well, suffered. Nowadays more people are diagnosed and less people have to suffer on.

Hoobley, I meet your criteria for iodine deficiency. No salt (sea or table), very little fish and almost no convenience food. I have just been on iodine drops for three months and had the bloods and urine test done again yesterday. If the levels are up then we can move onto the hormone section whic isn't working either.

One of my close friends was diagosed with hypothyroidism recently and they put her on Thyroxine - she is vry happy now. No longer tired and has lost 8 kilos. I hope they can do that for me.

I am eating and exercisisng and losing weight but at the quarted of the speed I should be losing it!

I got my bloods back on Thursday and the Dr said he now doesn't seem to think I have a problem with my thyroid but with my liver I am off for an ultrasound on Thursday to see if I have gall stones!!! I am feeling a little scared and apprehensive about it all and just want to know what is wrong with me. I have still been feeling very nauseous etc so I would love to get this sorted and start feeling better soon.

Hey Oshani - glad its not a thyroid problem but hope they can find out what it is really quick. If it is gall stones there are a few of us around that have had this problem and had the gall bladder removed and can chat with you about it. Anyway I hope you get some definitive news shortly and it's nothing major.

Well, at least it's another thing you know it's not i guess...

My XMIL had to have her gall bladder removed due to stones and she told me she felt stupid for leaving it so long - she kept putting it off and not telling the doctor how bad it was and eventually she got so sick she couldn't hide it anymore.

She felt a million times better after her surgery.
