Unhappy Tough decision or not ??

Got my 6 week check up on monday arvo....and i know the dr is going to ask about contraception. Atm DH and i use condoms and i HATE them with a passion, veeeeery rarely used them before getting PG (and in the last.....hmmm....9 years) so to have to have now is just not agreeing with me...LOL.

I was on the pill for 7 years prior TTC and it took 4 months for a BFP. But DH and i have discussed the issue and have decided we dont want me back on the pill because we do want to try for another bub around April/May this year. So by the time i got on it, it started working.....it would be time to come off it again....

As for charting and so forth...id be useless.....probably end up pregnant again straight away......id not trust myself!

So what option do i have other then my enemy rubbers...hehe

There is the mini pill. Its ok to use if you're BF.
The pill is effective after about 2 weeks so it's not really out of the quetion for 4 months.
I have the mirena - it lasts 5 years but you can take it out any time so you could use it as a short term option but I'm not sure about bothering if it's for such a short term as you're planning.
I don't know how long the depo shots last - maybe a one off of them would do the trick?

Depo lasts for about 3 months, but like the pill it can take a while for your baby to go back to normal when it is supposed to wear off - I had one injection and it took over 6 months for AF to come back. You could try a diaphragm, but you have to be measured up for one of those and I'm not even sure if anyone uses them anymore anyway LOL.

Maybe you could just try charting because April isn't that far away and it will help your chances of conception if you know your cycle too.

Hello, I hate condoms too with a passion too but we've found a variety that aren't too bad.

They are the non-latex ones - much thinner and more sensitive than the regular sort and also don't irritate me IYKWIM. DH says they feel more natural to him too. You might need to ask for them at the pharmacy. They are a lot more expensive than the usual sort but if its only for a few months you might find it is a reasonable compromise.

Marydean what are the brand of condoms that you are talking about? i am interested too as i hate the normal condoms. i have had one shot of depo but am concerned about the amount of time it could take to return to normal fertility as i was told up to 18months!!! so i don't think i will have another one of these shots.

Hello Hollo (!!) They are Durex Avanti. You only get 5 in a box and they cost an absolute fortune ($15+ from memory) but I can't see that we will ever go back to using the other sort! Sometimes you just have to pay for quality.

I`m also not a fan of condoms, neither is DH and we`ve just come across the Avanti Non latex condoms as well, they are great, feels a lot better then the previous brand of condoms we were using. We brought ours from Coles for $12

If you're looking for a barrier method, rather than a hormonal method, and condoms are out, then I'd think that a diaphragm might be your only option.

Spermicide isn't very effective when used on its own, from memory.

Depo is no good if you want to TTC soon, as it can take up to a year to regain your "natural fertility"

Oh, man it took me ages to work out what 'getting off at Redfern' meant. I'm so bloody tired...
Just a note on the mini pill - I've heard that for it to be effective you have to take it at the same time every day. If you miss-time one of them you need to use alternative contraception for 72 hours anyway. I know I'd be hopeless at getting it right, even without having to look after a baby, let alone with one...

Caro - that'd be the withdrawal method And we've had success with that. Of course my OB & GP etc etc all look horrified if we say that's our contraception.. but hey.. as my OB said .. he must be a man of steely discipline. LOL. Yup!

I have the MIrena but it's more of a long-term option, not because it's not suitable - fertility seems to return to normal pretty much as soon as it's removed, but because i don't know if you'd have to pay for it and it might be a pretty expensive option for short term. From memory they're about 90GBP (it was free on the NHS i just happened to ask what they cost the NHS when i was getting mine fitted), so around $210 for you? This is very cost-effective over the 5 years they last but probably not for just a few months.

Withdrawal worked for 3 years for a friend of mine but i would be WAY to scaredy cat to rely on it. LOL.

The miniPill can reduce your milk supply at first so be prepared, get lots of rest, eat well and feed bubs often for the first week or so you take it to counteract any possible effects there.

There is a computer, the Persona Monitor, which you plug uine samples into so it can see when you're fertile and it tells you when it's safe to have sex. I used for nearly 3 years with great success. I'll PM you a link. It too is kind of expensive (the pee-sticks have to be bought every cycle) but from memory it's 94% effective and completely natural, and you can use it after the next bubs and for your remaining fertile years if you want.
