Here's my story from the last 3 weeks. I'm sorry it's a long one, even without the all details.
On the 8th of April, when I was about 5 1/2 weeks pregnant I had some bleeding which was like my period starting. I was horrified, sobbing in the public toilets as I thought I was miscarrying.
I went to the womens assessment centre at the Womens and Childrens Hospital and they took blood tests and did a scan. They could just make out a tiny heartbeat, and told me my hormone levels were good. I was told to come back in a week for a follow-up scan.
On the 15th of April I went for my follow-up scan only to be told there was no heartbeat, and that I'd miscarried. I was asked whether I wanted to let nature take its course, or take hormones to bring it on, or go under general for a D&C. They said we also had the option of an scan in the ultrasound dept upstairs. We decided to go home and think about the options whilst waiting the three hours before the appointment for the next scan.
So after three hours of believing I'd miscarried we went along to the ultrasound dept and were shown a beating little heart on our embryo. The dating size measurements had the embryo at 6w4d, which was just what I calculated from my ovulation date. We went home feeling astonished, and grateful. A couple of hours later I got a call from the doctor saying that he was pleased to see I hadn't miscarried, but that he was concerned with the size of the embryo compared to the gestational sac, and also the heart rate was only 80bpm, and he would have expected 100-110 at that stage. And so the emotional rollercoaster goes on! He asked us to come back the following week for another scan in the ultrasound dept.
And so on April 22nd, last week, we went along and were told that there was no heartbeat, and that the little bub hadn't grown since the week prior. Devastating. We had a talk with the doctor and decided to book in the next day to be given some hormones to bring on the miscarriage.
DH and I arrived at the hospital at 8 the next morning. At 9am I was given two tablets of misoprostol to dissolve under my tongue. They gave me a pan to put in the loo to collect any matter that came out while I was peeing, and pads to use. The cramping started at about 10.30-11, and the bleeding not long after. I had two more tablets at 12, then 3pm, and then 6pm. The pain wasn't too bad, I had a couple of panadol at 2.30, and by 3.30pm I was wishing I'd had the panadiene forte which they'd offered, but it wasn't too bad for too long. They said at the beginning I may need to stay overnight, but by 7.30 the pain had died down quiet a bit, as had the bleeding, plus they said they collected quite a bit of matter...I'm pretty sure I saw the sac in the pan at about 12![]()
The last week has been ok at times, and really hard at others. This was our first pregnancy. I feel like it's brought my husband and I closer to each other, he's been great throughout it all.
Thanks for listening. If anyone wants any info on the misoprostol experience I'm happy to share more info by PM.
