Starangelk we're down to about 4 bf a day and 2 in the night here although it changes so often, a couple of weeks ago she wasn't feeding at night but much more during the day.

Studymum, avocado is definitely the number 1 spread here. I use unsalted lurpak on her toast. Philly was really popular too but then I started paying more attention to all the additives so that was out the window - still looking for a suitable alternative. Ricotta's pretty good, especially if I mix it in with stuff, pate on the very odd occasion, and sour cream mixed with anything! I make a mix with grated cheese, carrot and apple and a tiny bit of mayo which is a big hit too.

I have to share......tonight I gave DD some rice flakes and cottage cheese in a bowl. I was loading the spoon and putting it towards her and she'd grab the spoon and put it in her mouth. She started to get upset after a few goes and I thought I must have been forcing the food on her without realising it and she didn't want it. So I gave her the spoon and held the round bowl (chinese rice bowl) in front of her. She threw her spoon on the floor and then put her hands on either side of the bowl and drank the contents like soup. It was amazing! She ate it all and this was after her pork, potato and peas. That said, she wasn't too fussed on the first meal. She sucked on the pork and ate a bit of the potato but found the found the peas too difficult to pick up. Based on this I am thinking to make her a chunky soup tomorrow. BLS is SO fun

It is fun isn't it starangelk? Your DD definitely knows what she wants!

That's twice I've heard reference to rice flakes, I don't even know what they are......?

I have to share too..... yesterday DD was sitting on DH's lap eating a cruskit. She held a piece in each hand and was munching away happily. A piece broke off so DH picked it up and held it for her. She tried a few times to take it off him but couldn't take it as she already had her hands full. She stopped, looked at him, looked at his hand then leant forward and took it straight out of his hand with her mouth! Sat up and chewed, swallowed, then went on eating the other pieces. DH and I were cracking up laughing lol

    Hehehe, that's so funny.

I have another one. DD loves a yoghurt after dinner, so I load up her spoon and give it to her to eat herself. We have two spoons, she has one to eat from and I have one to load up and we swap. Last night she was teasing me with the spoon - she'd go to hand it to me then snatch it away from me and put it back in her mouth smiling and laughing. DH was cracking up laughing saying that surely she can't be so sharp already as to play teasing games. Sooooo funny.

YOur kids are so cute doing that game!! I got the rice flakes from the indian grocer - random I know!! They came in this massive massive bag for $4 and I use 1 big tablespoon and mix them with boiling water and add sultanas and some greek yoghurt. The rice flakes look like snowflakes and are white in colour and I guess the bag looks a lot like cornflakes.

    Hey guys,

Question - is kiwi fruit another high allergy food? We've had the same reaction to that as we did the strawberries, which is another bummer as it was something that she demolished and loved. Poor bubby.

Hi Mumma Sue, they've both got quite high salicylate levels - wonder whether that could be the reason?

ETA - I just googled coz I was curious after reading your post and having given it to DD this morning and watched her squish it up but not put it anywhere near her mouth. It seems kiwi is quite a high allergy risk food. I read that some varieties are likely to be worse than others and if your child has had allergic reactions to other foods you might want to proceed with caution.

Yes, I've heard about that to Swoop. Was it a face rash? Sometimes I think things that can be very acidic can irritate the skin.

It's not a rash or anything, it's the massive nappies. Like, 7 in one day. And her bottom is red raw too

Yeah, i figured that. Just thought the my little one getting the rash may indicate that the two foods may be from a similar family or have some similar ingredient and it is this that is hurting your bub. Have you thought about seing a nutritionist? I think there is one in the BB Professionals section - you could post to see if they have any advice

ETA, Sorry no dietician but there is a naturopath who posts infrequently. she might be able to help.

ETA2 Had a chat with DR Google and found this

    Kiwifruit and Latex Allergy

Like avocados and bananas, kiwifruit contain substances called compounds that are associated with the latex-fruit allergy syndrome. There is strong evidence of the cross-reaction between latex and these foods. If you have a latex allergy, you may very likely be allergic to these foods as well. Processing the fruit with ethylene gas increases these enzymes; organic produce not treated with gas will have fewer allergy-causing compounds. In addition, cooking the food deactivates the enzymes.

OMG I just had the biggest freakout. DD2 was eating lunch, baked beans and grated cheese. She finished that so I peeled her a plum (the skin is really bitter atm and she won't touch it), I turned my back to make my lunch and when I sat down with her I notice the plum gone, so I went looking for it as she usually drops the slippery little sucker, well IT WAS GONE, I couldn't find it any of it anywhere and I freaked out thinking she had eaten the seed , pulled her out, stripped her shirt off, searched high and low, looked all over the floor, was about to make way to the doctors in a huge bad mother panic, when I thought, hang on, stripped off her nappy and out popped the sucked seed that she must have conveniently tucked up the pants part of her nappy. She tends to sit in her highchair with her legs up on the tray (yes she is extremely flexible). Lesson learnt, it was only a few minutes that she managed to eat an entire huge plum, thankfully she isn't silly enough to try to eat the seed.

Oh no studymum! I woulda freaked out tooo!

Love hearing all the stories of the new foods all the bubs are having! It is so much fun watching DD eat, we gave her spaghetti bolagnaise the other day with fettichine.. she loved pulling the pasta through her fingers and poking it up her nose!! It was so cute!

Got to vent. I was nice enough to go away with the inlaws for a night (bad idea) DD was not happy as she had not done a poo for 5 days now (i know they cant get constipated being breastfed but it was bothering her and her tummy was hard as a rock?) ANYway.. mil knows we have been giving her food now, so she thinks. FOOD - all THE TIME.. she thinks because we are giving her food, she does not need milk ARG!
So mil asks 'can I give her pumpkin?' I say yes, she says she is going to mash it, I say, 'please dont mash it as she cannot hold it to eat it'
    so mil mashes it..
she said ' oh Ill give her the spoon and she can use the spoon to eat it' ?!!!?! she's 6 1/2 mths old ffs!!
So mil puts some pumpking on the seed and trys jamming it into her mouth.. ARG! Im pretty sure I said no to this!! So I pushed mil out the way, thank goodness dh walked in and yelled at her!! DD hated it by the way.. she pursed her lips together and squeeled!
Dh said 'just give her a peice of tomato' to mil, she wouldn't, so dh did. mil got defensive and started saying 'fine, i'll cook it again, it's not the way you should do it though..' (FFS after all we've been through with her trying to give her butterscotch sauce at 5 months, she's doesn't have the best ideas on feeding children!')
I kept my cool and said to her 'It's just a different way of doing it, and it works for us' she tried judging me again saying 'WHO told you to do it this way?' 'It's not right' 'It's not the way you do it!'
    ulgh.
    mil is so stupid.
But I think she saw how it actually does work. DD didn't want the pumpkin once she had cooked it again, because she was satisfied with her tomato..she luuuurves tomato! mil tried jabbing the pumpkin in her mouth but I pushed her hand out the way again. We just need to teach her now that food only happens once a day.. maybe twice. And I made a point of 'Feeding her FOOD' with my boobs as well. She does not understand that DD is just playing with the food, not always eating it. Mil wont beleive anything until she sees it for her self, so I think she got it that no mashed foods are what we do. lesson learnt for her, big step!!

studymum I would done the same thing! Funny that she tucked it away for safekeeping

Tali, have you thought of giving your MIL a copy of the Babyled Weaning book? I mean she asked where you got the info from, so let her read it. If she chooses not to then it's her loss, but it might just help her understand where you're coming from?

Tali your MIL sounds like a nightmare!

The other night we had some mashed potatoes with dinner, and I sat a bowl of them in front of DD so that she could dig in with her hands...... DH said, why not give her a spoon and she what she does. She put the spoon in the bowl and scooped some potato onto it She is soooo freaking smart, I tell ya. She didn't get much and ended up realising that her hands were much more effective but she had the general idea!! Clever girl!

OOOH Tali, that would infuriate me. I have had people question our method but not doubt it, well not openly anyway. I love to get out the baby led weaning book and show them the pictures and I LOVE LOVE LOVE saying "apparently it means there is less chance she will be a fussy eater" as so many of our friends have kids fussy with food.

Studymum that would have freaked me out!! DD is no where near eating whole plums at the moment but she is loving her quarter oranges, she ate 3 this morning.

DD is starting daycare this week and I've been thinking - I'm not going to mention we are doing BLS, I'm just going to provide the BLS food as per normal and see if they say anything to me................what do you think???
