I am part of a parents as teachers program where I get shown how through play Emily learns, anyway the woman was here at home yest and she asked about solids. I was a bit hesitant to tell her cause I didn't wnat to hear "you shouldn't be doing that"....but she was really interested. She even took the ABA wesite address down to get their booklet. She said she has so many kids she sees that can't come off their purees so she can see how this would work! How cool is that!
I know that ''food is fun till they are one'' but im just wondering...how much nutrition can DD actually be getting from what she is eating when it comes out looking exactly the same as it went it!! (TMI) she ate peas and watermellon yesterday and you could tell! LOL
We had spaghetti, rice pudding, peas, sweetcorn over the last few days. She still isnt keen on banana, tried it in yoghurt, on toast, cut into little chunks and coated with powdered cruskit so she could pick it up herself, has a little lick but not much else!
Wondering if i should try her with whole egg, my mum tells me i used to eat scrambled egg when i was about 10 months and LOVED it, but i read everywhere that you shouldnt give the whites till after 1. she has had scrambled and hard boild yolks but i think its abit rich on its own.
Anyway, read back alittle and thought i say my two cents worth...the poison face is funny, we have had the shudder and even a funny gurgling noise which cracked me up!!
About when to wait till start offering food...we waited till about 6 months, but only cause DD wasnt that interested before that, i have a friend who has been given advice from her CHN that babies should be started on solids at 4 months not 6, as waiting longer can cause allergies???...but i have heard totally the opposite for others, so basically, i guess it depends on your little one, youl know when she is ready...which is what everyone else said
GRRRR...to all those who judge without knowledge re: what your giving your LOs. But its great to hear of people who are interested and taking new ideas onboard!!
yup the new studies are saying that waiting to introduce certain foods too long can cause allergies If you have a family history though I wouldn't reccomend giving a child that food willy nilly.
There was a lady on the Today show this morning who was investigating the whole peanut allergy thing and whether waiting is in fact the right thing to do. Basically she says that from all the current research, they are not really sure whether you should wait or not!! Helpful. (but they are doing more studies).
Gave Peter a tiny bit of my peanut butter toast this morning and it was a BIG hit. Now to watch him like a hawk all day....
I forgot to say how excited I was that Ashton had butter chicken yesterday with basmati rice and he loved it! Even used the spoon and got it in the mouth each time. Was so cute
My mum made me really mad yesterday. She has always supported me, but when he was eating the chicken he gagged a bit, chewed some more then gagged again and chewed some more, you could tell he was still breathing cos I could hear it! Her comment "gee I don't like that at all, if he makes it to 1 ill be surprised" I got so mad at her and told her to shut up. Grrr think we will just eat at home from now on.
Missymoo... if my mum had of said that to me..she would have copped a mouthful...
Jack has started licking EVERYTHING he picks up....hmmmmm maybe he spends to much time with our dogs......hehehehe
my oldest (when she just started walking) would often go and eat the dogs biscuits.....
I didn't want to cause a scene infront of my little nephew I think that's why she said it there and not before when she was here and he was eating a biscuit.I told her to shut up and then Drake told her to shut up

Off topic, but that sounds really interesting - how did you get into that program?
Re the delay of foods and allergies, my take on it (FWIW) is that you still need to wait till 6 months (or near enough we started just before as, for the same reasons as Mel we wanted it to be a family experience and DSS wouldnt be around for a while) as the digestive system is not yet ready to handle food (thats why it still comes out formed early on - although some things always will, like corn) and by introducing food before 6 months you can start an array of digestive problems...
BUT the early introduction of all foods AFTER 6 months is recommended as it decreases the risk of allergies later in life - UNLESS there is a DIRECT (the childs Mother, father or sibling) allergy.
We introduced all things early (including peanut butter) like within the first 2 months of MJ eating - so from 6-8 months
The only exception to this was Honey as the recommendation is not realated to an allergy, MJ will get her first taste of honey after next week when she is one
anyway thats just my 2 cents!
ETA: i wish there was this much chatter when we first started solids
all!
I agree it's a minefield of do's and don'ts this whole solids caper. My head spins when I think about all the things you aren't supposed to give them. I have just stopped listening and going with common sense. Peanut butter I haven't given yet because it's a big no no, but I read somewhere that if they are going to react strongly, they can react even to just being near it or it being on your breath. I have eaten PB on toast while she is in my arms so next time I might let her try a little, she always tries to steal it!
Well we had an interesting dinner last night, we were eating something with olives in the sauce. Beth was sitting with us and the Bear gave her an olive. She spat it out at first and then she grabbed it back and chewed/ sucked on it for about five minutes! She loved it! And how is this for fussy, my child loves broccolini, but hates broccoli. I've tried like three times now to give her broccoli and she won't have a bar of it. But broccolini gets gummed within an inch of its life!
All the girls in my MG are pushing sweet potato through a sieve and doing the whole puree thing and I'm so glad we aren't.... this is so much easier.
All this talk about the magic 6 month mark, I'm starting to feel bad for starting her earlier. Have I really done the wrong thing? Should I stop and wait a couple of weeks? Now I'm so confused.
Captain..i dont think you have done the wrong thing atall!! you shouldnt worry about it, if your little one is happy and not having any problems thn im sure everything is fine. Its always 'safe' to stick with the current guide lines as you would hope that 'they' know what they are talking about, but in the past the guide lines have changed so much, used to be three months then six then back to four, now its six months again. And im sure most of those people who were started on solids at three months all those years ago dont have problems today....in the end they are just 'guide lines'!! will be interesting to see what the guidelines are when out babies are having babies of thier own...im sure we will be sitting thier saying ''in my day.....'' LOL!!!!
captain..hun DON'T feel bad.
it is YOUR choice no one elses... if you felt your bub was ready then that is entirely your choice, don't let anyone say otherwise...
Captain I recently heard that they have gone back to four months again! So in the two months between my baby being 4 and 6 months, the recommendation has changed from 'start at 6 months' to 'start at 4 months'. We started at 5.5 months because she seemed to be ready. if you base it on your baby's readiness I think that is better than sticking to the letter of the law - especially with the goalposts moving so quickly!
pixie that is exactly right...they DO keep changing the recommended 'starting age' ..... me...i take notice of me...if I feel bub is ready then i will start/try them with food...
The Speech Pathologist where I take my DS said that the World Health Organisation (WHO) who decide when you can 'safely' give solids to bubs will soon be changing it from 6 months to 4 or 5 months (can't remember which).
So no-one should feel guilty - ok? The 'authority' on such things thinks you're doing the right thing!
i was always told to give bottle first then feed AFTER bottle..because within the 1st year milk/formula is their main form of nutrition.. and that is how i have done it with all three. Jack doesn't start his day til 9.30am/10am..so he has breakkie then
