I know a Braxton - first thing I thought was he was named after the dude in Home and Away.
I don't think Brax and Braxton are really such terrible names. They're kind of on trend and it's more of a personal taste issue there I think :dunno:
Yes I agree, they are not in the same category as some others in this thread. I haven't heard of the character in home and away so doesn't bring up any negative connatations - unlike Dunger (maybe was named after the famous Brazilian footballer although should have been spelt Dunga). Even some normal lovely names can be associated with people or characters that are undesirable.
Not so much a bad name, as stupid spelling... cam across a Haeli at work today. (Hayley)
In the newspaper today:
:
A Dunedin man has changed his name to the longest legally allowed, after apparently losing a bet five years ago.
The 22-year-old man from Normanby is now legally known as 'Full Metal Havok More Sexy N Intelligent Than Spock And All The Superheroes Combined With Frostnova' - just one character shy of Department of Internal Affairs' (DIA) 100 character limit.
Do you know this man? Email us here.
A message on an online body building forum, written by someone describing themselves as a friend of the man, said the name change was the result of a lost poker bet and the man realised his drunken consequences only when his passport expired.
DIA Births Deaths and Marriages spokesman Michael Mead said the change of name was registered in March 2010.
The name met the requirements of naming rules and the applicant paid the fee and completed the form correctly, he said.
Mr Frostnova could change his name again any time by completing the form correctly and paying the $127 fee, Mr Mead said. The process takes around eight days.
Under Birth Deaths and Marriages rules, new names must consist of one surname, and one or more other names, unless religious, philosophical beliefs or cultural traditions require the applicant to have only one name - in which case the applicant is required to provide a letter of explanation.
Names may not be accepted if they cause offence to a reasonable person, are unreasonably long, or without adequate justification include or resemble an official title or rank.
In 2008, Family Court Judge Rob Murfitt publicly criticised some parents' choice of names, after he ordered that a girl named Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii be taken into court custody so she could change her name.
Names can also not include numbers or symbols.
Rejected names in recent years include Majesty, King, Knight, Princess, Justice, Anal, V8, 89, Mafia No Fear, Lucifer, full stop and *.
In 2007, a New Zealand couple tried to name their child 4Real Superman but were turned down because it contained a digit.
They settled instead for just Superman and continued to call the child 4Real unofficially.
Ooookaaay!
Someone actually called their baby Superman? OMG.
mind. officially. blown. Arte! :o
Lucifer was rejected? I have met a little Lucifer and I think it's a great name. What happened to being a secular society?
I bet the people who called their child superman got 1,000 likes for the name on Facebook first.
Another interesting one I saw yesterday. K a h a l a at first I was like oooooh like in Hawaii. But it's pronounced K a y l a .
See, I don't mind if an adult chooses to change their name to something weird, especially if it brings their name into alignment with their inner reality.
Really, really object to parents saddling their kid with a name with connotations/themes that suggest a personality type. Like, if my parents had named me Princess Trixie. I would most definitely need to change it to Full Cream Ice Queen Trixie. Yannow, just so my outer matches my inner. :D
Anal? Someone wanted to call their child Anal? Omg.....
Not exactly bad, but hard for the child when a parent spells a name differently to how it's pronounced for whatever reason (some I've known have been because it looks prettier).
I knew a Madeleine which they pronounced Madalyn (and I started pronouncing it initially like the like french cartoon character till they corrected me).
I also knew an Aisleen which the parent was seriously offended I pronounced it like 'I lean', when I should have realised it was the Irish pronounciation Ashleen - duh to me.
Fine if you want to do something a bit fancy pants/out of the ordinary, but don't expect people not to mispronounce it all of the child/adult's life and don't get offended when people do!
See, I like Aisling pron Ash-lyn.
So much so, Reisling (pron Roslyn) has been on the list for Stormy's middle name for years.
Lol can you imagine receiving that for your little girl? What do you think of my baby?!?
That she poos a lot?
I have a teacher friend who had a child In her class who's preferred name was Ashu. I just wanted to say 'bless you'!
There's a kid at the local school called Rish.it
Kids don't make fun of him. He's a total legend because swearing is legitimate when he's around.
Hahaha oh this thread has given me a good giggle! I don't get all these wierd names. I have heard of M'kailah before, i feel sorry for when they are learning to spell! And i had an email with the worst baby names on it...ajax?!! What will they call the next ome, spray n wipe? Maybe in a few years names like peter, paul, mary, sarah will be considered unusual and will be back in fashion? :) xxxxxxx
I will never forget when I worked at maccas as a late teen with a guy called satan. Pronounced "Suh-tahn" not SATAN (imagine me saying this in my most hard core metal voice). The looks he used to get were priceless. But he didn't care. I can't remember his ethnic background but I know the name was common and had no correlation with Beelzebub. He was an awesome guy. Everyone wanted to steal his nametag.
First baby of 2014 - "So’Unique Miracle Randle".
And as for babies named "Unique", there have been hundreds of different variations of the spelling of unique, including Uneek, Uneque, and Uneqqee.
Seriously.
Okay so I heard one today... I already know a boy called Blade (or Blaide?) and that was weird enough, but today I heard of a new baby girl with that name!!
The name of the day is Cyndeigh. Yep, You read right.
Cyndeigh - as in Cindy? Lord.
There's a girl on Toddlers and Tiaras called Rainbow Dash.
Watched Winter's Bone last night.
There's a heavy duty badass dude named Teardrop.
Just saw this name on FB *iyeesha* 👎😨
I was reminded today of the two kids of a girl I know. The names themselves aren't bad, but I can never get over the spelling - d . akotta and s . ebastyn. I always read them as Dah-cot-ah and Seb-as-tin. Annoys me every time lol.
Last year I taught an Ieesha and and Aishah. Same pronunciation. I prefer the A spelling.
Oh I saw a corker the other day.
Eathin.... Yep pronounce Ethan
I keep saying to myself Eat thin... Lol
If struggle with Ethan. I want to say ETH-an, not EE-thn. I'm a chemist, I struggle.
Ethan may make the list for Stormy's middle name, if Oliver is the second middle name. EthanOl(iver) is a great name. Even better than Grigio.
