Question Do you think sibling's names should match?

Ok so here we go again trying to pick a name for a baby and now we have reached another stumbling block - sibling names...do you think they should all "match" or have a "ring" to them so that when you say them all together they roll of the tongue or does it not matter if they all sound completely different?

Reason I ask is that our first two children have long names, Gabriella and Alexander, but they regularly get shortened to Gaby and Alex. But when people ask me the names of my children I use their full names. So for this next child a lot of the names we like are shorter names to begin with and I just think they dont really flow with the others.

My DH thinks I am crazy and if we like a name we should just go for it, but I have a habit of matching things up eg around the house etc so I wonder whether it will drive me insane! Maybe I am just being silly!

So what does everyone else think?

I'm totally with you! I think siblings names are best when they have a ring to them and flow nicely when you say them together. It would drive me insane too, if I had three kids and one name didn't "match".

FWIW, My DH is one of three: Elizabeth, Richard and Alexander. So my PIL are on our wavelength too.

I gotta agree with your DH! Not about you being crazy! but about if you like a name then go for it!

I think the names will develop a ring to them when you say them altogether over time.

I love your other kids names as well. Good luck deciding.

No, I dont reckon sibling names should match, i think its quite absurd that parents try and match the names, the kids are individual people so they should have individual names.

I think the more often you say names together, the more "right" they sound and the more they match. Because I don't think any name automatically "goes" with any other name.

A lot of people thought DS's name should be decending syllables (IE 3-2-1 and not 3-1-2) but now think his name is perfect. Of course it is, I chose it! But I did get a bit of flack about the order of his middle names when he was a baby.

We have Olivia, Charles and Alexandra.

All get shortened to Livvy, Charlie and Lexie.

I'll be honest, I have no idea if they "match" at all, but though common usage the names all "go togeher" OK?

I am one of 5 kids: William, Charlie, Claire, Lucy & Tom. Now I really have no idea if these "match" or not, but because it was what I grew up with, in my head they all "go together" IYKWIM?

So I reckon whatever you chose, sibings names WILL go together through use?

Well I am one of 3.
Skye, Wade & Sahra....all a bit different & (IMO) hippy style, lol.
    DH is one of 6
Anthony, Craig, Paul, Thomas, Rebecca & David....nice names, but quite common.

Mine, I'm not too sure about. Jazmyne, Brianna & Jesse. I feel like Bri is the odd one out with the 2 J's, Jesse's isn't long enough & Jaz's is the only one spelt different.

But that's just the way it is I guess. My friend & her sister go great together...Mary-Ann & Anne-Maree. Their mother didn't even realise til they were both adults!
I do think that no matter what, they will go together after you hear it a few times.

I like longer names that can be shortened. And hopefully have 2-3 nicknames that can be made out of it. My daughter has a few nicknames. I don't think they have to match siblings, but if you'd like it to, then go for it! If there are short names you like, see if they can be lengthened. Like Jack can be lengthened to Jackson. I have a mindblank on more names LOL.

    Thanks for all the replies.

I think like a few people have said the more you say the names the more they will just "go together".

We really like the name Evie for a girl atm and I think that is why I am sceptical, cause it is the opposite extreme of the other two! But the more I repeat them, Gabriella, ALexander and Evie, or Gaby, Alex and Evie they sound ok!

Still would love to hear more opinions on siblings names tho!

Evie can be lengthened to Evangeline or Yvette if you wanted (and would use the long name, no point otherwise IMO). But I think all three names sound nice together as they are. Gabriella, Alexander and Evie sounds great.

Evie could be short for Evelyn or Evonne.

ive been wondering about this myself a little..

dd is Krystal, for the next bub, i like Zac or Kaylah

i worry that Krystal & Kaylah might be too similar both having 'K'..

I totally think names should match but within reason! So if you have a classic name like Sarah or Emma then to add a name like Coco (which I love BTW!) would be weird for me. That's why I find it hard to think of names for our next kids cause I really want them to match with Mackenzie. I love the name Charlotte but I don't think it suits at all.

Anyway I actually think Evie goes really nicely with your other kids names and it doesn't matter about the shortening of it - the actual style of name suits really nicely!

I think Evie "matches" its a very pretty name btw!

I'm one of three Neville, Chanel & Leighcandice. Our names don't really go together as such but like others have said you get used to them so they sound like they do!

The more you say it, the more it'll seem to just go together!

I think they should match within reason. for example you don't want 2 kids with really 'normal' modern names ( say Carina and Tom) and the mix it up with something a little out there (like Mistaya).

so if one name is a little unusual or different (or very normal) then you should probably continue with the theme. You don't want one child singled out.

But otherwise, it really depends on personal preference. personally I like long names that can be shortened into nicknames. others prefer short names which cann't be shortened any further.

i dont think lenghts as such have a big impact but if they rhyme or have a silly theme i think its strange.
on Dr Phill today there were twin boys on it Taylor & Tyler, i think they could have come up with something a bit more different they already share the same everything else!
and like if u had an Adam & Eve, Romeo, Juliet type deal but Evie is a very pretty name and goes with Gaby & Alex shortened or their full names.

Nixon & Tyron just so happened to be the same length ending in "on" we were going on our initals to match mum & dad and picked the names we liked within that.

having said all that my fav girls name has always been Tylah, if i had a girl now i dont think i could have a Nixon, Tyron & Tylah (2 Ty's)

    hey congrats on 16weeks yayyy!!

    hi,

i've never posted in here before i was just having a sticky beak around really. But i did nanny a little girl who was gorgeous called Genevieve which they shortented to Evie and Eva depending on what came out- and squeeba when she was having cuddles. I am particularly partial to this name myself. I also think it goes very nicely- Gabriella, Alexander and Genevieve. Good luck x

I think Evie sounds gorgeous with your other children's names! What a cute name! There are longer names with the nickname Evie if you wanted to go longer. Evelyn, Evangeline etc.
