ok.....I'm torn. I think I really like the name Lola for a girl. DH could like it but I guess the thing that's holding me back are
Song reference no 1 - She'll never have to spell it
and I keep having song reference no 2 "her name was Lola...she was a showgirl....etc" stuck in my head on repeat!!! I have to stop myself from bursting out in song as I'm guessing its probably not going to help persuade dh
Anyway..what are your opinions. I'm ready for brutal honesty!!!
Other contenders at the moment for girls are probably
Ruby and Lucy
and my DS's name is Declan.
Love the name Lola. It is a beautiful name. The children in my class all love our Charlie and Lola dolls we have in our class. They are from the books by Lauren Child.
I wouldn't use it as its not my style. But if you love go for it. Tell DH he can pick the next bub's name, that's what we have done. I chose DD's and DS's and DH has chosen bub's.
I probably like Lucy best.
Only coz I have a great Aunt Lola, so it seems a bit old fashioned to me.
& my BIL's dog is Ruby! I can't get past that!! Sad I know. I really like them all though.
I thought Madonna's DD name is Lourdes? Or have I got the wrong one??
My honest opinion is that I really don't like it. For one thing, it's a nickname for Dolores. It doesn't stand up well with your son's name- he has a full name, she would just get a nickname.
I do think of both the songs you mentioned, and the book Lolita. It has sort of a sexy/strippery feel to it that I don't like, and it seems a little bit trendy and downmarket. It just has too many negative associations.
I really like Ruby and Lucy a lot better.
Similar names that aren't nicknames and don't have any negative associations that I can think of: Lana, Lara, Leila, Lila, Lilia, Lily, Lora, Lori.
I certainly wasn't worried about it sounding like a nickname....really Jack was traditionally a nn for John (i think) and has topped the name polls for who knows how long.
I think that origins are interesting but not necessarily defining iykwim.
Lola still can be used as a nickname, yes many people use it as a full name, but I would not say it is not a nickname anymore. I wouldn't use Jack as a full name either.
I know the names I suggested can be used as nicknames, but none of them originated as a nickname for a specific name, like Lola did.
