    I probably like Lucy best.
Only coz I have a great Aunt Lola, so it seems a bit old fashioned to me.
& my BIL's dog is Ruby! I can't get past that!!
Sad I know. I really like them all though.

I thought Madonna's DD name is Lourdes? Or have I got the wrong one??

My honest opinion is that I really don't like it. For one thing, it's a nickname for Dolores. It doesn't stand up well with your son's name- he has a full name, she would just get a nickname.
I do think of both the songs you mentioned, and the book Lolita. It has sort of a sexy/strippery feel to it that I don't like, and it seems a little bit trendy and downmarket. It just has too many negative associations.

I really like Ruby and Lucy a lot better.

Similar names that aren't nicknames and don't have any negative associations that I can think of: Lana, Lara, Leila, Lila, Lilia, Lily, Lora, Lori.

In the year 2008 the name Lola is not a nickname and it is most often used as a complete first name - so don't let that deter your decision.

I honestly don't think of it as a "sexy" name but instead a very delicate, sweet name. If you both love it then go for it.

And for what it's worth, Lila and Lana and Lori are used as nicknames for other full names as well (Delila, Alana, Lorelai etc.)

I certainly wasn't worried about it sounding like a nickname....really Jack was traditionally a nn for John (i think) and has topped the name polls for who knows how long.

I think that origins are interesting but not necessarily defining iykwim.

I love the name Lola. I also love Lucy and Ruby. We almost called our DD Ruby but ended up going with Rory.

So..... I have two more options for you:

Rory (which would go great with Declan as they're both Irish names)
Lilah (which is close to Lola if you can't get the songs out of your head)

    Hope these help!

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought that this forum was a place to share names for babies whether real, made-up, unusual, unique etc etc, not a forum where "real / original /traditional" (or whatever you want to call them) names are debated. While each are entitled to their own opinion of course, I can't help noticing an underlying theme where unless a name is "real" or has some long-term origin it is knocked? Maybe it's just me getting my back up??

For the record I like Lola... it's sweet and innocent and does not conjure up stripper connotations for me!
