as someone who's first name is similar (it is a nick for at least three different names) you get used to it and just igore it to be honest! it's much more common now to have names that are "traditionally" nick names (Danni, Bella, Ella, Beth) as first names now - i think most people would just ignore it!
we have a friend who has a Billy and a Sam - not shortened (or lengthened) for anything - and noone thinks their names are anything but Billy and Sam...

so we came to the compromise of Victoria which I loved but thinking she would be called Tori once she was born. Funny thing is, it didn't really stick and she is called Victoria 99% of the time.
