People’s reactions when you tell them your baby’s/child’s name.

DS1 is Angus and DD is Harriet. When I tell people what their names are they always say "nice" or "lovely" or something like that.

DS2 is George and WOW, I had no idea what a reaction a boring old name like George would get. People LOVE it, especially old people and especially old male fruiterers.

I have had this conversation (or similar) many times now.

OM – old man fruiterer.

OM: Oh look at the little kangaroo baby. (‘cos DS2’s always in the Ergo). Look at you.
Me: His name’s George.
OM: George! Look, a little George. Are you Italian?
Me: No.
OM: Are you Greek?
Me: No.
OM: Why you call ‘im George?
Me: We just like it and thought it suited him.
OM: (calls over other OM fruiterer colleagues) Look it’s a little George. He’s not Greek.

I think it’s absolutely hilarious. It makes me smile for the rest of the day.

I love the name George, this one is probably going to have George as a middle name.

Our first son is named Peter and we always get "That's an old name" or "You don't hear that one much anymore" We named him after my Dad so didn't really think about how old fashioned it might be.

My DS is Alexander but we call him Xander and introduce him as such and people sometimes do a bit of the "ZZa-wha?"

Hehe thats cute. I never would have associated George with Greek or Italian though I would expect to get more of a reaction to the name Angus.

I LOVE the name George. Great name! And yes old people LOVE it it is my brother's nickname and we used to call him that rather than his actual name most of the time and we'd get people commenting all the time

DD's name is Annabelle, middle name Mary. About half of the cards we recieved at her birth include something along the lines of "what a beautiful name" and quite a few people have said "oh what a lovely classic name". Would love to get a reaction like your OM though

Haha it's a very Italian and Greek name. DH's dad was Greek...and he was a George! I love the name.

DD's name is Isla. We usually get, 'oh, that's a good Scottish name!' Had a few people read it and go, 'Iz-la?', one person act like it was a crazy made up bogan name

DD is Sahara Anne. Everyone commented on a beautiful name, it suited her and how long it is (our last name has 11 letters). But she is definalty a Sahara and no other name would fit her.

We get more of a reaction of what we wanted to call her if she was a boy. DH wanted a racing car/track theme. We would have called the baby Daytona. SO many people really hated it and said 'well luckily you got a girl'

Amelia's just gets "oh that's a pretty name" and that's it :-/ THIS is part of why I always wanted to name my kids non-common names like mine. But I fell in love with Amelia and wouldn't change my mind *sigh* My own fault.

My girls normally get the 'wow, they are different names' response.

But your story reminded me of some close friends of the family. When these friends announced they were expecting their third bub no one could have ever picked what they would call their little boy... They named hiim Gordon! When his birth was announced family and friends went into shock with the name, and not a single person liked it (well besides the mum and dad of course!). But now (20yrs on) everyone will say how they didnt like it at first but the name totally suits him and has since the day he was born!!

DS is Axel Timothy. You should see the bewildered looks I get from little old ladies when they ask his name Everyone else seems to really love the name, but then again, most people wouldn't say "What a stupid name" to your face. I absolutely fell in love with Axel from 9 weeks pg. When he was born he just looked like an Axel. The other choices were Heath and Owen. I guess none of our choices are particularly popular names

I like George. I didn't used to, but its grown on me over the last few years.

I also like Gordon, but DH passed a no Thomas the Tank engine names rule.

When I told people DS1s name, I got horrified reactions, stuff like OMG really? I overheard the midwife at the hospital telling the other staff and them laughing about what an awful name it was

0o0o0oh My daughters name is Harriett as well! (cept, we did 2 t's at the end, er, I thought that was the right spelling! turns out it wasn't...DOH!)

And we always get comments like *Oh, that is a really old fashioned name, is she named after yr grandma* .. OLD people LOVE it!

I am Italian and I guess people kinda think tis a wee bit weird to have such an English sounding name for ya wog child!

There isn't much to say about William. Most people said that A m e l i a was a pretty name and quite a few said it had been on their name list. My mum said Ewww. Same again with E r i n, everyone has said that they like/love it, except my mum who said Ewww again!
