Spelling variations - which is more "traditional"?

I'd pronounce Kailey as Kylie because of the 'ai' (hence i spell Haley not Hailey -same reason)

I also went to school with a Kayleigh.

I like Kayley out of those options.

For me the L after tha AI changes the sound of the vowel. Like in hail. If I saw Kai as a name I'd pronounce it Kye but if I saw Kail, I'd pronounce it like you do hail.

You know, that makes total sense. So why do we pronounce it with long i sone when theres no consonant on the end..I can't find any information on this and Im really intersted now

Thanks all and thanks Sarah for clearing it up - I too prefer the original traditional spelling of names.

I don't know of anyone with the name and yes Jas, I thought it was a bit too uncommon and modern to have a traditional spelling - I don't usually like modern names, I prefer old traditional names.

This name came to me in a dream recently - I was pregnant and had a girl and called her Kayley (or however you want to spell it!) and I had never even considered the name before IRL or knew anyone of the name so thought it was strange. Then I saw 1stTimeMumma88's thread a day or so later and she mentioned the name too (don't worry, I'm not name-stealing - I'm not even preg!) and I thought oooh it really is lovely!

I don't know if dreams mean anything...I had a similar dream a couple of years ago and the name "Odessa" was in it and stuck in my head when I awoke...but I really don't like that name!

It is such a lovely name, it is a modern name but its not overly common, i know only one Kailey and its spelt Kaelie (which personally i dont like). I'd only be ticked off if someone i am close with stole my name but even then id still use it.

Its funny the name came to me when i was using some silly baby name generator. I had my sights set for Summer but now its Kailey Summer and i am very happy with that.

I think the traditional was of spelling it is Kayley but I much prefer it spelt Kailey!

Hmm yes now I see there are plenty more spelling variations than I pointed out!

Pandora, I suppose if you were Irish you might prefer to use the original Irish spelling but I personally wouldn't as most people would be constantly asking how to spell it or how to pronounce it! (And I'm part Irish too with a classic "Mc-something" surname )

I think I'd stick with Kayley now that I know it's the original English-translated variation!

Now my username is a whole other discussion I love the name Kailani - it's Hawaiian and I always thought it was pronounced "Ky-lah-ni" ("Ky" as in rhymes with "my" and the "i" at the end as in the "i" in "igloo") and that others would think the same. Now I think it may be a bit ambiguous too!

I like the original Kayley as it's traditional, and also Kayleigh as I think it looks prettiest!

I went to school with a Caley and a Kaylie, and now work with a Kaylee. Of the three, I much preferred Kaylie - although it was short for Kaylicia, so perhaps not the traditional approach you're after!
