    Would it get shortened ??????

    Hiya

Well im in the home stretch now, only 3 - 4 weeks to go. We dont know what we're having but i think we have finally agreed on a boys name. We love Ava Grace for a girl but i also love the name Claudia, the only reason we crossed it off the list is that we were really worried it would get shortened to Claude. What do you think ? Do you know a Claudia that gets shortened or would you tend to shorten it ?? I really love it and cant stop thinking about it now its getting so close

    Thanks in Advance

I'm afraid I do know a Claudia & she does get Claude for short. Bizarrely she also gets 'Claire' when people forget her name....?!

I love Ava Grace by the way!

I wouldn't shorten it. If people do, you can correct them, it's easy enough. Claude's a boy's name so I wouldn't shorten Claudia to Claude anyway.

I know a Claudia and on a few occassions I have heard people shorten her name to "Clod" or "Clauds". Persoanlly, I dont shorten it. Its not really a long name anyway. I think most names get shortened in some way - i think its pretty unavoiable. Mine gets shortedned to Kaz and Kar.

All names get shortened And despite all my best efforts, the family & CC call Patrick "patty". I've tried to correct them to "pip" or "patrick" or "paddy" but nope, it just comes out.

Think of it as a form of affection

The Claudia I know is Italian and pronounces it cloud-i-a and we shorten her to claudi (as in cloudy). I quite like it.

But Ava Grace is beautiful too....

I would probably expect it to be shortened to "Claudee" or something cute like that.. which I think is CUTE.

However, this is coming from someone who calls her daughter "kelti-coo" for short.. LOL

I went to school with a Claudia and it never occured to any of us to ever shorten it. She always to this day is just "Claudia".

I must say straight away i thought of Claude

i must say though people will shorten most names
I get tan, or tanny (my name is Tania)
    Hubby is Stew or Stewy
DD is Em or m&m ( Emma)
Ds1 is Ham, mish mishimoo (Hamish)
    DS2 is Lochie, loch (lachlan)

    I like Ava and Claudia

Yep I think it will be shortened, Aussies have a way of shortening every name possible. I have a GF that calls my son Ewy and here we were thinking Ewan wasn't really a name that would be shortened. And bizarrely if names can't be shortened people tend to lengthen them - such as Brettly or Bretto instead of Brett!!!

Thanks everyone, i know you can try to stop people shortening but i guess it still happens. Such a shame because i LOVE the name but really wouldnt want it shortened, looks like we might stick with Ava. Lol Krisp i know what you mean about lengthening. When i was preg with Blake we thought no one could shorten that but now he gets Blakey - which i HATE and as much as you try to stop it, you cant all the time. Im sure even Ava would get some kind of nn but what can you do !! hehe

    Thanks again everyone

I would probably only shorten it if I heard the parents or other close family/friends shorten it first.

I agree with a previous poster that Claude is a boys name.

I think if you love it, go for it. People will shorten names regardless - all you can do is correct them and use the name you prefer in front of them. Both of your chosen names are gorgeous btw.

Just to add - my DS doesn't have a long name, but it is 3 syllables. I hate him being called just the first syllable only! Thankfully, he associates that with a Thomas the Tank engine now so when my Dad, despite 2 years of telling him it's the full name not the short one, calls him the short one he'll have to read DS's favourite Thomas book to him! Hahaha! Dad's the only one to call him anything but his full name, though. I stopped MiL babying it up, my Mum and Sister have been told off (Sis now calls DS "Smudge" or "Smudgemeister" as a NN as I don't object to that!), Nursery were corrected on day 1 and no hassles thereafter... just my Dad. And Claudia isn't a name with a very common nickname so you may not even have those hassles.

I think it would be shortened. Claudie, Clauds. etc. It's probable by the time they go to school (if they're a girl), someone will think of a way of shortening it. Afterall, my name's Mikayla & my nickname got as short as KK and Mix. So, probably. BUT! Ava Grace, I must say, is a BEAUTIFUL name. (:
