BTDT.

There are two types of tantrums - upset and controlling. If your bub is genuinely upset, an offer of a cuddle will calm them down. If they are tantruming because they aren't getting their own way, they won't accept the offer of a cuddle and will continue to tantrum.

Always offer comfort if they need it, but if it is a controlling tantrum the best method is to ignore. Place them somewhere safe and then ignore it. Offer an 'out' every couple of minutes eg offer a food/activity/cuddle/nap because once they get going it can be hard to turn it off without help. Try not to yell, although I know it is very frustrating and embarrassing when it happens in front of others. I have left DS's activities in tears a few times because of his tantrums. His record was a full hour.

DS is now almost 2.5 and he is finally giving them up. They are now reserved for when he is really tired.
