My DS just looked so tiny in his cot.. He looked so much more snuggly and warm in the bassinet (he was born at the start of winter). He was in his cot by 3.5 months cos he outgrew the bassinet.
Both our girls started off in a bassinette in our room and then went into a cot in their own room at; DD1 @ 6 months and DD2 at 10 months (we co-slept)
I guess it'd depend on the layout of your house and how comfortable you'd be having bub in a different room. When DD was born she went straight into her cot, but her room was adjoining mine and I'm a very light sleeper at the best of times - with both doors open I had no problems hearing her when she stirred. She did look super tiny though!
This time, we've bought a cradle and plan to have Penguin in our room to start with as his room is right down the other end of the house. Even with a monitor I think I prefer it that way, as much for convenience with night feeds etc as anything else.
We used our bassinet until DD was about 4 months old for all sleeps, day and night. Only reason we stopped using it when we did was because she needed surgery on her hips and had to go into plaster. Her legs were then too wide for it. We still wanted her in with us, so we set up the portacot in our room and she slept in there until she was seven months.
I loved having the bassinet. I was really upset with why we couldn't use it anymore. Got my fingers massively crossed that one day we'll be able to use it again.
