    Question re: baby panadol

hey guys, mason has been really unhappy since his needles this morning

I just gave him some panadol to help relax him and within 2 mins he spewed. It smelt just like the panadol

What do i do? Do i still have to wait 4 hours before giving him anymore?

Ooh thats a tough one Danni. Unfortunately its probably not worth the risk of giving him another dose, as you don't know for sure how much stayed in his tummy, and panadol is actually quite dangerous if taken in higher than normal doses.
Having said that... its up to you hon...
I can honestly sympathise, it is SO frustrating isnt it.
I would like to hear what others suggest as well...

Danni, the exact same thing happened with Lindsay after his first needles and we gave him panadol. We decided not to give him anymore as we had no way of knowing how much he had left in there. I gave him a nice warm bath and lots of cuddles and just occupied him until he settled.

Danni, I personally wouldn't give him anymore cause you dont really know how much was absorbed and how much wasn't, unless he gets a really high temp, then I might consider giving him more.
How long after having the panadol did he spew? Little babies absorb it pretty quick cause they are so small.
Keep and eye on his temp and i'd give him another dose in 4 hours
Poor little Mason and his needles

Awww Danni, don't feel bad hun. It can be more upsetting for us at times than it is them when they get their needles. I remember after that first time with Lindsay he screamed the whole way back to the car afterwards and I felt like a right cow, but it turns out he was just hungry LOL.

Take heart that it does get easier each time.

Danni it's upsetting I know but look at it this way, you're upset because you love him so much.

I agree with the others not to give him anymore.

As a nurse, we would consider repeating the dose if the vomit was within 5-10 minutes of him receiving it.

Can i give some great advice that my sister told me .... give panadol 1/2 an hour before any needles as it is going to be sore regardless and at least u know that they will have it in their system before anything happens!

The reason that you will be told not to give panadol prior to an immunisation, is because it can mask a reaction.

This is not scare mongering, so please don't think it is, I am just telling you what my MCHN told me, because I asked her about it for DS.
She does the council immunistaions, and they had one baby who fell into a really deep sleep after the immunisations, and becuase the mum had given panadol prior to the shot, apparently it made it harder to tell what was going on.

I gave panadole to DD#1 before all of her needles when she was little and had no problems. A friend of mine called today as her DD just had her 4 mth needles and she used the numbing patches. Has anyone else used those? Apparently she hardly cried at all, and she thinks she only cried because she was being held still and didn't like it!

Bella's due for needles next week so I'll be dosing her on Panadole half an hour beforehand and putting the patches on.

You can get them from the chemist - but i would be very careful using them on a baby so young.

DS used to cry for like 2 mins after an injection and then stop. I would be more tempted to think about numbing patches on a 4 year old, mainly for the placebo affect.

I was also told not to give panadol before injections for the same reason as Rach said. And quite often they don't need anything but a hug or a feed anyway, so i would rather not be giving my little baby panadol when he doesn't need it.

It is totally up to you, it worked really well for me as a way to get him to keep the panadol down. Hope you find a alternative way that works well for you!
