Blocked nose and only 3 weeks old - help!!

My gorgeous little man is only three weeks old and I think he might be getting/have a cold!!! He's got a really blocked nose and can hardly breathe, the poor little fella!! He's finding it really hard to feed, because he can't breathe through his nose - anyone have any ideas what I should do??? Thanks.

There is some saline drops called Fess you can get at the chemist that come with an aspirator. Basically you drop some of the solution into their noses & suck it out. It sounds awful but has gotten us through many a head colds in our house.

The other thing we do is alternate showers morning & night, so when DH has a shower in the morning I stand outside & chat holding the baby so the steam can help loosen everything up to run out.

If you are breastfeeding you can also squirt some of your milk up the nose to help get the blockage cleared. Sounds yuck but very effective.

Matilda had a head cold at 2 weeks and I found it so hard to figure out how to help her to feed etc. With Jovie this week I have been flushing her out with Fess, sucking it out, feeding her and squirting some milk up her nose as well.

i agree fess little noses works wonders. it may sound yuck and feel terrible while you are doing it but it is excellant and works straight away. i just used it on my 4 month old and used it on my 3yr old when he was a baby.

Another vote for Fess, it's great. And it's just saline solution so you don't need to be worried about putting medications in their nose.
We use it alot around here too.

It is a lovely photo! Will got a cold at 3 weeks and we used a vapouriser which seemed to really help. The pharmacist also said we could put some euky bear rub on a hanky or something (but out of reach and definitely not on skin) and that would help. He said the over three months thing on the rub was due to the skin being too delicate but the actual ingredients aren't harmful as i thinks its fairly natural stuff.
    Hope he's better soon.

Oh my god how adorable is that photo! ! ! !
It is very common for babies to have a blocked nose after they are born as they have alot of mucus that they are trying to get out! The best thing to buy is saline nasal spray, from the chemist! It works wonders. Josh had the same thing, it is heart breaking isnt it!
The nurse also told me to steam up the bthroom and sit in there with the little one 10 mins a day! It also helps clear the nose.

I totally agree, Fess Little noses is fantastic! I also found using a oil burner with Eucalyptus oil in Emily's room about 1 hour before she went to bed also helped her sleep.
    Hope he gets better soon!

    Thanks so much!!

I've been to the chemist and have bought some Fess little noses but am waiting for DH to get home and help me use it on him!! Poor little fella is struggling again tonight so I can't wait to use it.

Thanks also for the comments on Luke's photo - I just love it - he's so adorable!!!

Hey Kel, Christy's right BM works a treat too.....even if you just express some off and use a dropper. I hope the Fess works though, it's good stuff. And if you ever run out you can always make up your own saline solution.

Poor Luke, I hope his nose clears up soon, it's horrible, isn't it?
