Even higher temp today - I dont know what to do?

After my post yesterday my sons fever came down to under 37.5 (was 38.2) and he seemed much better. But now even after nurophen his temp is 38.8 now and he has slept all day inbetween crying fits. He doesnt like me touching him either. Im worried now but dont want to run off to the hosp and look like an idiot if its nothing.

    What should I do?

Trust your instincts Anna. If you are really worried, do take him to see someone. No one is going to think you are an idiot for worrying about a high temp.

I'd be going to the DR or Hospital, why sit at home stressing & worrying when you cna be at the hospital having your mind put to rest, it could be nothing, it could be an infection...

Either way worrying & doing nothing isnt going to help, I'd go get it checked...

    I would go.

Honestly, the triage nurses, in my experience, always seem sympathetic to high temps. They won't think you are an idiot!

(I had to take Charlie in a few months back, he had high temps that weren't responding to Panadol, and we took him to hospital, and like you I did feel like a bit of a nelly, but I am glad I did, as they were so sympathetic, and it turned out he had Parvo Virus, which isn't serious, but at least I knew, IYKWIM?)

If it were me sweets, I would go to the hosp, just to put your mind at rest. He sounds like he is not himself at all, poor little man.

ETA, just had a thought.......are you able to ring your GP and tell them the situation? Do they so emergency appts for babies? That may be a good compromise....although they may end up suggesting you take him to hosp anyway?

    Good luck. xx

You are not an idiot my love... You are a Mama who loves her little one.

If you are worried go to your gp or the local hospy - though the wait is likely to be long at the hospital...

Can you give him some tepid baths? That can really help - just so that when you put your forearm into the water you can't really feel the temp - not too cold. If it's too cold he will shiver and this is what will raise his temperature.
I know high temps are really scary in little ones but it's his bodies way of fighting off a bug. It's good to give him the nurofen 4th hourly - if this isn't keeping his temp down I think getting him asessed is a good idea. We often suggest alternating the nurofen with panadol this can help. But do go and see someone. It's late in the day and things are always scarier in the dark of night.

Remember nobody is going to think you are crazy - and if they did bollocks to them! This is your baby and you are worried...

I'm sorry your little man is still sick Anna. Like the others have said - do not feel bad about taking him to a doctor or hospital. If you are concerned - you should take him. The fact that he has had a fever for 2(?) days which is not responding to panadol or neurphen is definately reason to seek professional advice (espeically if you feel something is wrong). And like Lucy said - the triage staff at the hospital are always good with these kinds of things - and they have seen it all before so won't think badly of you taking him in.
Sending lots of get well soon vibes.

Come back and let us know how you get on.

Id definately take him to the local doctor or hospital. I dont think the triage nurses at the hospital will think your dumb - they'll think youre a parent who is worried about her little boy.

Take him to the hospital. You've done all of the right things so far, but I really think he should get checked out.

Is he still wetting his nappies? What about oral intake? He may have a cold, or a UTI, or it may turn out to be nothing, but I think you are better to be safe than sorry.

If you're worried I'd get him checked out too. More so because of how he's behaving than the temp. It may well be just a viral thing but at least someone can look at him and make sure he's not getting dehydrated and also checking he doesn't have something that does need antibiotics. An emerg department may have a long wait but you'll have some peace of mind. There are also some GP services that come and see you at home and then send you in to hospital if they are worried. At hospital if there is not something obvious when examining him they will probably check a urine and may do a blood test. Don't worry, paeds doctors will always take a fever in a baby seriously and no-one will think you are silly for getting him checked out, even if it turns out to be nothing serious. And you will feel better having him checked out.

Nina was exactly like you described Jett a couple of weeks ago. I rang my dr as it was during the day and he wanted me to come down ASAP, Nina's temp got to 38.8.
It turned out she was at the early stages of an ear infection, so after some antibiotics and more nurofen, she came better during the night.
I hope he gets better quickly.

Joshua had something similar last week. Vomiting, high temps even nurofen could not kick out the temp. We rushed Josh to hospital as he became limp (like a rag doll) due to fever! He ended up having a virus and the doctors told us that the fever is a way of the body getting rid of the virus.
They told us to keep up nurofen and put a cool washer on his forehead and neck! They also told us not to keep him to cool (as in clothing) as that is just cruel in this time of year ... just a cotton jumpsuit (rather than just singlet and nappy).
We eneded up needing antibotics for Josh and it still took a whole week to get it out of his system. I hope you get answers soon and that the little one feels well shortly. It stresses you out doesnt it as you dont know how t o help them..poor bubs!

Anna - I'd say take him to the hospital, as a mum trust your instincts. Both times that my kids were sick and ended up being in hospital I said ages before that that something was wrong and no one (docs included) would listen to me. With Ned he had a temp but it would go down pretty quickly with panadol, but he ended up being a very sick little baby. I hope everything is ok and he is on the mend soon.

    How is he now Anna?

I went to the hospital once, freaking out because there were a few drops of blood in Zander's nappy that looked like they had come from his penis. The Dr checked him our & found a tiny little scratch near the opening which mixed with urine to make it look like more IYKWIM. I said to him that I felt really stupid for wasting his time & his response was that he'd prefer to deal with a mum that was worried about her baby & it be nothing than having a baby with a serious issue.

    *hugs* for you both....
