Oh I forgot about the comments about BLW!

MIL always apologising for not having anything he can eat. He has a plate of what we are having FFS! Just because she isn't shovelling puree down his neck she thinks he isn't eating.
MIL and FIL constantly telling him to eat up his veges to be strong or good or whatever. We are trying not to put any values on food FFS. He eats or he doesn't. No problem either way.
MIL and FIL denying him dessert because he hasn't eaten all his veges. We feed him what we are having. He eats what he wants. We don't have food we wouldn't want him to eat, so if he wants more dessert than veges we don't mind. Once again we are trying not to make food value laden! How many times do I need to explain BLW to them!!! Arghhhh

    Then my favourite from everyone
When are you going to give him cow's milk? My answer: When he turns into a cow!! (I am not anti-dairy as he eats cheese, yoghurt etc I just don't see the point in cow's milk as a drink)

Is it a boy or a girl? (This one was last week, DS is 15 mths old!)
Did you have a natural birth? (by complete strangers)
Are you having any more? (and the thousands of variations on that)
Have you started toilet training yet (from about 9 months, and usually by older people who then proceeded to tell me how their children were toilet trained by 15/12/10 months )
How long has he been walking for? (Not so much the question, but after my response - since 9 1/2 months - their response that their children were walking by 9/8/7/6 months)
Oooh, _______ would never eat THAT! (With a look of disbelief from mums of babies/toddlers around his age when they see him gobbling down steamed veges, in pieces, separately, and without some kind of sauce slathered over them! And if he doesn't eat every last bite, a knowing shake of the head that says, 'told you he wouldn't eat it')
But can't he just have a bit? (MIL when he wanted to feed him white chocolate rum truffles and I said no! )

    Are they twins?
    Is she STILL feeding?
    You Have Your Hands Full
When Will You try For A Boy?
Your A Natural - When Will You Have More?
Are You REALLY Letting Her Climb Up There?

The one i hated the most:
Wont You Give That Kid A Dummy - i got it often but the one that got me the most was in the supermarket, DD1 was prob 2mths old she was sooking as she was hungry some old lady just looked and said "wont you give that kid a dummy", i could have burst into tears... we'd tried dummies and they didn't work, she was sooking because she was hungry (she wasn't SCREAMING or even CRYING) so i picked her up, cuddled her and said come on gorgeous mummy will give you BOOBY as loudly as i could.. left DP to do the shopping and the old bat shaking her head.

I got it with DD2 aswell but i said "no, i'm a lucky one she wont take them, she prefers BOOB"

Oh my goodness, I am never asking a mother of babies/young children anything again!

I have been guilty of asking some of the questions, like 'is he a good baby?' Or 'does he sleep well?' Or 'is he your first?' And when the woman is pregnant, 'will you find out the gender or keep it a surprise?'

All the time I ask these questions its not in a judgmental way, its genuine curiosity and a desire to make polite conversation about the baby. Mind you, its never to a stranger, unless they have volunteered info, its always to friends, colleagues or family.

I am now getting the, 'will you find out the sex?' question (no) and it honestly doesn't bother me... maybe cause I ask it myself with genuine interest.

Also, I seriously want to know, but have never asked, what DO you do with poo when it comes to cloth nappies? I honestly have no idea how you'd go about it!

I think most people that ask these questions mean well, and to be honest I don't really know why they are so annoying, They just are! I'm sure I asked plenty if annoying questions before I had kids too.
And the poo goes in the toilet, newborn poo requires the assistants of a little squirt or something similar

Phebee - I think I get grumpy when it's complete strangers, I don't mind friends and family asking questions.

Also I think when you answer a question and then they say something against it, or imply that you're doing something they wouldn't, it gets my back up. If it's someone who has genuine interest and wants to know more, I'm happy to talk until the cows come home!

I.e. I have gestational diabetes, and I don't mind telling people how it's going or asking more questions. But then when my MIL tells me what I shouldn't eat (and she has no experience with it), or tells someone not to buy me a box of chocolates as a thank-you for doing something until after the baby is born, so I don't sit and eat the whole box now, that p*sses me off to no end.

"Is he a good baby...?" - Response "No he's not. We have to lock him in a cage at night so he doesn't try and attack the dog. We've asked the priest to come back to exorcise him 3 times... but he won't come back to the house." Then smile sweetly and walk on. The best bit is when you look back and they are still standing there.

I don't actually find any of these questions annoying. It's just human nature. And I can guarantee that at some point in your life you've done the same and never meant to cause such distress.

Have fun with the silly questions Turn it around into a positive. You get annoyed and fizzle over it for hours... you have fun with them it doesn't matter you'll walk away with a smile. I know how I'd rather feel

ie. Kel I would have said about the head & C/S "No I just have an awesome vagina".

OH except for the "real baby" comment. I think I would have said quite simply well you're a real nasty person aren't you?

Is he a good baby? No he's Satan.

Is DS1 a good big brother? No he smacks him on the head and steals his dummies.

What do people want to hear?

I think it's the tone in which the question is asked for me - some questions do carry an inherent judgement that gets my back up and just irritates me whereas someone asking out of genuine interest isn't a big deal - people love babies and will ask questions.

My favourites at the moment are:

You must be happy it's a boy - ummm, well yes I am, but would've been just as happy with a girl.
Bet DD would've liked a sister better - too bad if she did, it's not like she gets to pick or can give him back now...and she's actually really excited about a baby brother.
Wow, that's a big age gap - no, really? Thanks for pointing that out. Had to find another father first.

Yeah, I ask most of these questions myself to other mums. I'm just interested. What's the alternative, not asking and them thinking I just don't care? I only get annoyed as the other mums above have said - if it's a 'loaded' question - put out there so they can judge, tsk or brag. Otherwise, friends, family, strangers, ask away.

Don't stress too much, I find that it is usuallly more "who" is asking the question, and "How: they are asking it, as to whether it gets under peoples skin so much - as well as their own personal issues around that question. I know that alot of the questions posed here don't annoy me at all, but can see why others might have issue with them - depending on who it is coming from, how it is stated, and the actual individual it is directed at. ;-)
