    Red raw bum

Help!!!!!! DS has never had nappy rash, until I don't know maybe now????? Since about 3 weeks ago he's been having a red ring on and off around his bum hole. Not too big or that bad to begin with, and I have always managed to get rid of it with various creams (I normally slather his naughtly bits and bum with cream anyway). For the last couple of days, the redness got a lot worse. He's been trying to do a poo (he's 2 and still in nappies) for 2 days now and he manages a little marble sized ball of poo in size 2 to 3 times a day. I am now guessing he's holding onto his poo b/c his bum hurts. Today it was so red raw, I almost cried. When I tried to put the anticeptic cream on the reddest area, the cream just wasn't sticking, like the skin was really burnt We had a doc appointment today but we had to move it till tomorrow because it was a really late one and he would have missed his dinner/bath. Any suggestions? I'm so scared of going near his bum! He practically sreamed the house down today, it broke my heart. Maybe it's his 2 year molars????? His poos have been normal.....not sloppy or runny like they say happens with teething?

was the marble size poo hard? Maybe he is a little constipated...

As with the Bum do you have any sudocream, something with zinc in it? or some pawpaw cream. just to help ease the burning he may be feeling.

I wouldn't use antiseptic cream, something like pawpaw ointment or sudocream would be much more soothing. Antiseptic may well sting a red rash. Have you tried a warm bath for the possible constipation?

    Thanks everyone.

Ausgirl, we have a warm bath every night, I might have to go back to stewed apples I think. They usualy do the trick. I stopped the anticeptic cream (I used the bepanthen one which is what most of my friends recommended-we normally use the zinc and castor oil one). Today I mixed vaseline with a bit of cornflour, so far so good.

Liz, OMG that sounds so awful! Your poor DD2! I'm glad it cleared up in the end. I did find the paw paw ointnent fairly good (there is the cream and the ointment, we used the ointment as it says it's for nappy rash, burns etc)

I'll ask about the Daktozin Taurean at the docs today. I really hope it clears up soon, it's a little bit better today but not much, but he will let me put the cream on which is a big bunus as yesterday he was kicking and screaming like a banshee.

A good natural barrier cream is Green ridge calendula ointment. You get it from the health food shop. I used it on DS when he has nappy rash from diarrhoe.. Everyone kept telling me to use zinc etc, but I didn't and this worked.. It is great stuff!

We use Daktozin on DD1 as well Beata. She gets hideous nappy rash. The pharmacist told me to use it and apply it twice a day for 2 weeks after the rash has cleared. We always would use it for a few days and then go back to normal cream as soon as she cleared up, but since doing this, she has been much better.

Sounds like a combination of constipation and possibly some anal irritation resulting from it. Which becomes a really vicious circle after a bit as he holds on trying not to poo because it hurts, but that makes it harder to go and more likely to cause small tears around the opening. Any nappy rash certainly won't be helping matters.

TBH, I'd leave off with the creams for a couple of days and bathe with cotton wool soaked in cooled chamomile tea (sounds weird as heck, but it works!) and allow plenty of nappy off time. Couple that with some stewed pears or watered down prune juice to try and soften his poo.

Poor darling. I used to put some cornstarch powder on their bum when it was that bad that the cream wouldn't stick and would leave his nappy off as much as you can and you could put a pair of undies on and be prepared for a bit of mess but it should help. Could definitely be to do with his teeth. Hope it's feeling better soon xoxo

The marble size poo balls were sort of clay like, kind of lacking moisture if that makes sense? I do think he's partly constipated.

Cat, I normally apply a cream with zinc and castor oil in it, it's noramally great. I have tried the paw paw ointment and it did clear it for a couple of days and then it came back...

Cranky Kitten, I think the chammomile water would be good actually, I have some tea bags, thanks hun. If he only lets me near his bum long enough to dab it on.

Tanstar, I have heard of the cornstarch hun..I have been giving him heaps of nappy free time too. I might give it a go tomorrow. I just hope it's a lot better then, poor chookie

Thanks for your suggestions ladies xox

Brew some with a teapot reasonably strong and add it to his bath water maybe? More than one way to skin the cat

Dd2 had dreadful nappy rash as a tiny baby. Like red raw bleeding patches of leathery skin we tried everything. Natural, unnatural, cleaning with water and tissues etc etc. stumbled across a combination of creams as, like you, the creams weren't sticking. I did pawpaw first with sudocreme on top. It healed up really quickly with that combination.

The Daktozin should work quickly hon. We've always had relief (pretty much cleared!) within 12-24 hours. I use Sudocream with every nappy change on both my girls so they rarely get nappy rash (DD2 is 5 months and hasn't had any yet) but when DD1 has gotten it, from poo problems too, the Daktozin worked unbelievably fast.

I was going to suggest reassessing his diet. I know DS2 gets a sore red bottom if he has tomato. Maybe think if there's anything he's been having lately that could have caused it and eliminate that for awhile to prevent it coming back?
