    Vaporisers? Rattley chest @ night

    Any help appreciated!!

My little one is 11 months and is fine through the day but at night has been getting a really rattley chest and cough and lots of runny nose type things and its really starting to affect his sleep (and ous!) I think he's trying to shake the end of a cold. I've been rubbing baby balsam into his chest before bed, but I'm just wondering if there's anything else i can do.

i've heard of vaporisers but am not sure how they work. are they more for blocked noses or do they help out with coughs etc aswell?

    Thanks in advance!!

Your DS is probably coughing at night due to having a blocked nose, so the vapouriser will definitely help with this. Unfortunately at that age there is nothing you can do for a cough, so you have to treat the cold. I'd definitely recommend you looking into a vapouriser.

Not exactly the same but when Izzy had a cold we used a vaporiser in her room, and we also raised her cot slightly up one end (she was only about 4 mths old) so that her runny nose could run down and out rather than back down her throat...It all definately helped - also one thing I would do too is keep his room warmish.... really cold air (if it's relevant where you are!) can make it worse so a small space heater or keeping your house heating on can help overnight too.

    Hi
Vaporisers are great when bubba has a cold...how they work (from memory! lol) is at night time, the air in the bedroom gets cooler, so by 2-3am its quite cold and dry, this makes any difficulty the child is having breathing worse... The vaporiser re-moistens the air and make sit easier for the bubba to breathe again.

Charlotte was really bad when we came home from hossie as I was really sick an the poor thing had such a runny nose she could barely breathe!! the vaporiser really helped, so did elevating the bassinette mattress. And if you can, grab some "fes" its saline for their nose...loosens all the mucous so they can sneeze it out or swallow it.

HTH and I hope bubs feels better soon

I'm glad to hear that the vapriser helped - sometimes they work, sometimes they don't, it's a bit "hit and miss".
At home, we use a nasal aspirator (basically, a bulb you squeeze, stick up the nostril, and then let go to suck out snot) and sometimes we use otrivin junior to help relieve nasal congestion.

vapourisers are also great for croup, also try having a nice hot shower and putting bubs in a highchair while you shower and the steam produced bu your shower can help losen the moucus on the chest...

Also great tip which i found works baby bolsom or vicks (think there's an age limit with vicks??? cant remember) on the bottom of the feet and put socks on... (not sure why that works but has helped my DS before...
